ACTIVITY SHEET
What is soil erosion?
Soil erosion is the movement or transfer of soil from one place to another. It is the wearing away
of soil caused by water, wind, gravity, animals, humans, and other agents of erosion. It occurs
naturally but it will become worse by human activities such as farming, logging, and mining.
-Weathering and soil erosion affects landforms, plants, animals and humans.
How do weathering and soil erosion affect living things and the surroundings?
Effects of Weathering and Soil Erosion on Living Things and the Surroundings:
1. Effects on Landform
• Weathering and erosion lead to the formation of new landforms which develops into
natural attraction.
• Weathering and erosion affect the shape, size and texture of different landforms such
as mountains, riverbanks, beaches, etc.
• Weathering of rocks helps form the basic component of soil (like sand and pebbles).
• Erosion of rocks causes landslides which destroys animals and crops, properties and
buildings, etc.
2. Effects on Plants
• Weathering helps in the formation of new soil which is needed in the growth of plants.
• It also contributes to loss of fertile soil and makes land less productive for farming.
• It carries away topsoil. As a result, plants do not grow well due to lack of nutrients.
3. Effects on Animals and Humans
•Less food production which can affect animals and humans. •Waste from mining pollutes the
rivers and seas and directly affects aquatic animals. •Floods can cause damage to human
properties, destruction of crops and livelihood of farmers.
What causes soil erosion?
LET’S TRY
B. Put a smiling face ( ) on the line if the statement describes soil erosion and a sad
face ( ) if it is not.
___1. Movement of soil from one place to another.
___2. Water, wind and human activities can also move pieces of rock or land to new places.
___3. It is the wearing away of soil.
___4. Breaking down of rocks into smaller pieces.
___5. Evaporation of water due to excessive soil heat.
