Many, many years ago, a boy named Charlie was born deep in an enchanted
forest. Charlie’s father, a legendary wizard, taught him (1) ____________________
magic when he was very young. His father gave him a wand for his fifth birthday
and showed him (2) ____________________ it around to cast spells. Charlie’s
mother, on the other hand, was a powerful witch who specialized in making magical

these magical brews.
But Charlie was a terrible listener. He always forgot (4) ______________ plants
______________ for the potions, and he never remembered
(5) ____________________ any specific ingredient to the big bubbling pot. He also
wasn’t good with his wand. He never quite understood (6) ____________________
his magical powers. The truth was that Charlie just didn’t like learning about magic
and potions. He most liked wandering around the forest, daydreaming about going
on an adventure.
One day, Charlie wandered far away from his little house. He wandered for hours
until night fell over the woods. Charlie looked around, but suddenly nothing seemed
familiar. He couldn’t decide (7) ______________ way ______________, because
he didn’t know (8) ____________________ home from here. Charlie’s father had
once taught him a magical spell that would transport him home if ever got lost, but
Charlie had forgotten (9) ____________________ that spell. Now he was

You and your friend are discussing how you would react to encounters with mysterious
beings. Complete your conversation by writing conditional sentences about unreal
situations on the lines below.
You: Hey John. I have a question for you. (1) (How react/meet a ghost)?
John: Well, it depends on the ghost. (2) (be excited/is a friendly ghost)! But (3) (is a
mean ghost/probably run away as fast as possible)! How about you?
You: I’d be scared either way! Ghosts totally freak me out! I’d much rather run into a
vampire or even a werewolf.
John: Really?
You: Sure. I think vampires are interesting. I’d love to talk to one. (4) (ever met
one/definitely strike up a conversation).
John: What?! But don’t you realize that (5) (vampire bites you/turn into a vampire too)?
You: Oh, that doesn’t bother me at all. (6) (become a vampire/live forever). That might
be cool!
John: But vampires die if they’re exposed to the sun. (7) (are a vampire/never go
outside during the day). (8) (am you/consider that).
You: That’s a good point. I didn’t think about that.

And guess what? It was a very peaceful rest. I didn’t have a single nightmare!
