Part 1
1. L Oinamoas, was the king of Pisa when he got an oracle. The oracle said he would
be killed by his daughter’s husband. Because of this, The king decreed that any young
man that wanted to marry Hippodameia (His daughter), Had to drive away with her in
his chariot. And Oinamoas would follow in another chariot. And he would spear the
suitor if he caught up with them. The kings chariot’s horses were a gift from
Poseidon, And therefor very fast. The kings daughter fell in love with a man called
Pelops. Pelops wanted to marry King Oinamoas’ daughter, Hippodameia. So the king
challenged Pelops to a chariot race. If Pelops won, he got the girl, but if he lost, the
king promised to behead him.
Surprisingly, Pelops agreed to the race, but simultaneously began forming a sinister
plot to defeat the king.
Before the race, Pelops and the king’s charioteer, Myrtilos, secretly replaced the
bronze linchpins in the king’s chariot with linchpins made of wax. Just when the king
was about to pass Pelops in the race, the wax melted and the king was thrown to his
death. however, his charioteer Myrtilus survived the fall.
But not soon after Pelops killed Myrtilus by throwing him off a cliff, cursing himself.
the burial place of Myrtilus was a taraxippus in Olympia, a "horse-frightening place"
during races. After his victory, Pelops married the departed king’s daughter. And he
then organized chariot races as a thanks to the gods, And as funeral games in honour
of King Oinamoas. So he would be purified of his death. It was because of his funeral
race that the Olympic games had formed.

B. On day 1, The athletes had to comply with the rules: cheating and corruption were
forbidden. On the first day of the games the athletes swore solemnly not to commit
offences before the statue of Zeus, 'the guardian of the oaths', in the council house of
Olympia. The same oath was sworn by their fathers, brothers and trainers.
On day 2 they did the pentathlon which meant five events were contested over one
day, starting with the stadion (a short foot race), followed by the javelin throw, discus
throw, and long jumping.
The most important religious event of the whole Olympic festival started on the day
tree of the Games -and was the sacrifice to Zeus. All gathered at the entrance to the
Altis. Ambassadors from the Greek states brought symbols of their cities to be shared
at this celebrations.
The fourth day of competition was mainly for contact sports. The first sport of the day
was wrestling. The were no rounds and wrestlers employed a variety of holds, lifts and
other movements to make their opponents fall. Three falls and the man falling was
declared the loser. At midday, boxing began Boxers were often severely hurt, cut and
disfigured and in extreme cases even killed. Boxers often went for their opponents
head and face so fast footwork was essential for the competitors to avoid too many
punches. The final combat event of the day was the pankration, meaning "all-
strength" in Greek. This sport combined boxing and wrestling. The goal for the
athletes was to make their opponent give up and concede defeat.
Day five was the final day of the Olympics. This day was a day to celebrate the
accomplishments of the victors. Spectators, trainers and athletes made their way,
procession style, to Temple of Zeus for the final time, with the winners leading the
way.
