WHAT A WONDERFUL TIME OF

THE YEAR!
It is great to see the entire village
bursting into colour. Scotsman’s Pit is
looking amazing! The amount of wildlife
around the Pit is extraordinary.
Sitting on the benches presents an
opportunity to rest and meditate on what
is a treasured landmark in the village. I
don’t confess to knowing all the “proper”
names of the birds and plants, but I do
know that when my heart stills, this is a
good place to be.
For some time, I have been incapacitated
from doing any “proper” work at the Pit When you come into the village also take a

POST OFFICE POND Since Post Office Pond was dredged in the summer of 2022,
submerged pondweeds have re-appeared for the first time in
some years. We know they have been there before because
they have grown from the seed bank that was trapped under
the layers of silt that were removed from the pond. The most
obvious species is curled pondweed which has curly edged
leaves that can have a resemblance to seaweeds. At the
moment it has small pinkish-white flower spikes above the
surface but this will only be a seasonal event and for most of
the year the entire plant grows submerged. It is a sign of the
improved health of the pond and should not be a cause of
concern.
Submerged plants provide food and shelter for other forms of
life and oxygenate the water. Their leaves are also used by
newts to lay their eggs and could help them to re-colonise our
ponds. Tim Baldwin

LYNN LANE SPEED WATCH
It was interesting to read Andrew Bickerton’s comments in the May issue, especially in
view of the instigation of the Speed and Traffic Awareness in Lynn Lane project
(S.T.A.L.L) started in September 2023.
Having recognised a noticeable change in driver behaviour and traffic volume, a serious
accident waiting to happen perhaps, its prime objective was to identify the frequency and
levels of speeding and present its findings to the Parish Council. Further to a 1 month
programme of a daily 1 ½ hour “stake out” around the hazardous “S Bend” area, it was
shown that of the total of 863 cars monitored 213 exceeded 30mph with 61excess of
40mph (24.68% and 7.07% respectively). The Parish Council subsequently agreed that
this was an alarming statistic and was then supportive of residents campaign that, at
minimum, Norfolk Highways should consider the installation of white gateways and an
additional site for the SAM2 speed awareness sign. This has been agreed and work is
scheduled for early this year .
This outcome will bring Lynn Lane almost consistent with Station Road, Castle Acre
Road and Weasenham Road deterrents, we being absent from the applauded work of the
CSW who are unable to operate in the area due primarily to Health and Safety concerns.
Whilst I have assurances direct from the Police that Lynn Lane is now on their “hot
spot” scheduled watch rota, which partially offsets this CSW loss, due diligence
monitoring will need to continue so you will be seeing me again roadside collating data
towards remaining issues. For the record I am also not in agreement with increased
powers for CSW groups but repeat offenders should be identified.
My thanks go to all Lynn Lane residents for their input and support, Heath Farm for their
hedge work and the exhaustive help of the Parish Council Clerk, Sarah Harvey.

49 YEARS OF GREAT MASSINGHAM PLAYGROUP-PRESCHOOL!
The Playgroup began in 1975 by myself and Christine Davison. We both spent the
previous year on a course at the College of Arts and Technology in Kings Lynn to
enable us to open the Playgroup. My daughter Kirsty was three years old in the October.
Christine’s daughter Rebecca was three in the September and while we were on the
course she was expecting her second child, Mathew. Fundraising was arranged and the
villagers were very generous. We met in the village hall on a Tuesday and Thursday
morning and we always had help from the mothers. My son Stuart was one year old
when we started so I put him in a play pen for safety. By the time he was three he could
do every jigsaw puzzle. I was very influenced by the program Play School on the
television. I used to have a coffee break and watch it with the children.
I found out that Play School was a favourite programme of the late Lordy Copeman who
lived two doors down from me. When Stuart started school, I left Playgroup to start a
part time job. Christine Riches
Playgroup started at the Village Hall. I can remember having to fill in a long and mostly
irrelevant form to get planning permission for change of use for the village hall. We got
a subsidy for milk for the children. We used to have a climbing frame made by my
husband, water, sand, home corner, book corner, playdough, jigsaws, painting and junk.
I often did finger rhymes and songs while other mothers cleared away. The mothers were
brilliant, they took turns to help and were amazing fundraisers. We had a committee and
I remember a good community spirit. Chris Davison
We moved to the Fire Station in 2002 and then needed to raise £7000 for a mobile. We
had Bob the Builder on the village green and a massive turn out to support the
playgroup. So many village people put so much time getting the mobile up and running.
I got my Theory and Practice of Playgroups Certificate in 1978 from the college and
went on to join Home-Start so carried on working with children and families.Janice Bolt

GREAT MASSINGHAM PARISH COUNCIL

Great Massingham will mark the 80th Anniversary of D-Day by
lighting the beacon on Thursday 6th June at 9.00pm. The
beacon will be lit as part of a nationwide chain of beacons across
the UK. Cllr A Brun will also play the ‘Last Post’ to
commemorate the Normandy Landings of 1944. You are all
invited to come along to share this special occasion.
The Platform Roundabout has been temporarily removed from use as repairs are
necessary to ensure that the roundabout is safe to use. Please could we ask that all users
take heed of both the hazard tape and signs and not make any attempt to use this piece of
equipment at the present time. The repairs will hopefully be carried out relatively
quickly and the equipment will then be made available to use once again.
From a long-term perspective, the Council are investigating options and pricing to
replace the current roundabout with a modern equivalent, hopefully during the course of
this year.
Please note that we also have a Casual Vacancy, please head to the website or visit the
notice board for further details.
To see this months full article please visit the Parish Council website

Great Massingham Village Hall - 100 Not Out!!

Opened on July 13th 1924, Great Massingham Village

Hall was constructed by volunteers from the village,
following financing by local businessman Charles
Dewar, a member of the famous Scotch whisky
distilling family, who lived at Abbey House. Following
his death in 1933, in 1937 his widow gifted land behind
the Hall and this became what is now the Jubilee Field
(Playing Field).
Today, Great Massingham Village Hall is a vital village
amenity used by the Parish Council, Coronation Club,
Trefoil Guild, Community Lunches, Film Night, Bowls
Club, Tennis and MultiSports Club, Historical Society,
Community Cars, St Mary’s Church, the School, Quiz
Night, Craft and Chat and Bingo as well as amateur
dramatic productions and numerous one-off events such as dinner dances,
pop-up restaurant nights and lifetime celebrations.
Excellent facilities include a large, comfortable bar area equipped with 2 wide
screen TVs showing live sports, WiFi, a Snooker & Billiards Room – one of the only
ones in the area! - a beautiful outdoor bowls green, quality tennis courts with out-
door lighting, outdoor gym, up to date outdoor children’s play equipment, pé-
tanque pitch and a large field with football pitch called the Jubilee field.
To mark this special anniversary, the Trustees and Directors of the Village Hall and

munity. Beginning on Thursday 11th July, and running through to Monday 15th July,

GREAT MASSINGHAM & HARPLEY SCHOOL PFA’S

are thrilled to report the tremendous success of our Race
Night at Harpley Village Hall on May 11th! It was a fantastic
and enjoyable evening for everyone who attended, and to-
gether, we raised an impressive £1321 for Harpley and Great
Massingham PFAs. The support from both communities was
incredible, with attendees participating in races, and enjoying
the chance to win money and over £300 worth of raffle prizes
on the night! Stay tuned for details on our next Race Night,
which promises to have a unique twist. A big thank you to
everyone for your unwavering support and especially to those
individuals and businesses who sponsored races and donated
prizes, without you the night wouldn’t have been possible.

A GOOD EXAMPLE FOLLOWED!

A few days after the “Litter Pick” while out walking, I saw
Leanne Elton and her two boys Freddie & Albie. They were
heading home, the two lads having collected a load of
rubbish, had gone home earlier for a wheelbarrow, which was
now - full of rubbish - being pushed by Freddie. I got into
conversation with Leanne, who said that earlier while they
were out walking they had seen someone pick up a large
plastic bag from the roadside and take it to a bin. The lads
liked the idea, hence the barrow load of rubbish and two very
proud young boys! More recently I saw Leanne who
mentioned the incident, and commented about the low turn
out for this year’s Litter Pick - and added “We will do it next
year!” Thanks to two inspirational young lads!! Robin Arbenz

Message for Parishioners from Joy Smith
Dear Friends
Well, we are now almost half way through the year just moving into the
month of June with hopefully more sunnier days and less rain!!
Things are still busy and there is a lot going on. In Grimston we are look-
ing forward to the annual Tractor Rally on Sunday 16 th June the same day as Father’s
Day so a real treat out for dads. At the end of June there is a festival weekend at
Harpley. There is always something going on in our parishes, that is the lovely thing
about living in the countryside the seasons come and go but there is always something to
do, especially in our gardens.
Unfortunately, in my garden the weeds grow faster than the plants and it is an ongoing
battle to root them out. I think it is like that with our lives as well we often find things
taking over our time and our lives. So, what feeds and sustains your life today? What
relationships, values, and beliefs nourish your life? Who are the people that enrich and
enliven your life? What are you needing and asking for when you pray that God will give
you your daily bread?
In whatever ways you might have answered those questions you’ve described the wheat
in the garden of your soul. And wherever there is a garden you’ll also find weeds. We
don’t plant them, and we don’t want them, but somehow they always manage to show
up. Weeds happen. And that’s true whether it’s the garden or the garden of your life.
The wheat and weeds of our lives grow side by side. Their roots can intertwine. And
sometimes what looks like wheat is really false wheat, a weed. It means that every
gardener of life must be discerning about what she or he is growing, what needs to be
tended to, and what needs to be uprooted.
Anything that is not wheat is probably a weed. Weeds are the things that try to take over
the field of our life, disfigure the beauty of our garden, and choke out the wheat that
feeds, sustains, and nourishes our soul.
We need time to be still and look at things, not always easy, but we have to root out the
things that hold us back and encourage growth in the things that are better for us and our
families.
Take a look at your garden today. What do you see? Happy Gardening

Walks around the Parishes in 2024:
This year there are a few new additions to our usual series
of walks. There is a range of walks for all abilities so there
should be something to suit almost everyone. If you’re not
a walker why not come along and join us for refreshments?
Over the last few years these walks have proved to be
popular ~ they are also great social events, a chance to chat
and get to know others from our sister churches across the
Benefice.
Remember to wear strong footwear as these walks include roads, tracks and fields which
are uneven or possibly muddy. Why not join us sometime?

BIODIVERSITY PROJECT NEWS

Spring growth has been very rapid this year with high moisture
levels in the ground and the area has quickly recovered from the
effect of the winter flooding. It has not been without its effects
however: some erosion of the pond bank on the south side and a
sudden increase of nettle growth in the area near the viewing
platform. Volunteers have been busy replanting the pond mar-
gin, keeping the paths clear and pulling some of the nettles,
hopefully to avoid them becoming dominant. More welcome has
been the best showing of ragged robin for some years beside the
path on the north side of the pond. The next working party
morning is on Saturday 15th June at 10.00 a.m. Tim Baldwin
