ENGINEERING DESIGN
Engineering design is the process of devising a
system, component, or process to meet desired
needs.
Engineering design process involves set of steps
that a designer takes in identifying a problem or a
need, at the end, creating and developing a
solution that solves the problem or meet the need.

The steps in engineering design includes the

following
 Define the problem
 Do background research
 Specify requirement
 Create alternative solutions
 Choose the best solution
 Do development work
 Build a prototype
 Test and redesign
STAGES IN TECHNOLOGY DESIGN PROCESS
1. PROBLEM: Technology attempt to solve
practical problems which arise out of life’s
situations.
2. ANALYZE THE PROBLEM: On attempt to solve
a particular problem, it is necessary to
analyze (examine in details) the situation to
find out exactly what the problem is.
3. WRITE A DESIGN BRIEF: Since the problem
has been understood, the next stage is to
write a design brief. This is a short statement
containing a problem to solved.
4. CARRY OUT A RESEARCH: Research can
involve reading, reading, listening, talking
and observing. At times a problem can be
solved “directly out of one’s head” that is
using one’s own knowledge and imagination.
Otherwise, to obtain the best possible
solution, one will almost really need to gain
same new knowledge and information, and
this will require research.
5. WRITE A SPECIFICATION: After research,
one should have a good understanding of
what is required and a cleared understanding
of what can be limitations or impossibilities
in achieving the design work. In that case, a
specification can be prepared, that must
contain specific details of the design which
must be satisfied, and also identify the
design limits.
6. WORK OUT POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS: The
possible solutions can now be met by
drawing some ideas on paper. At this
juncture, the first idea may not actually be
the best. Therefore try many different
designs (not less than three designs).
Combining one’s ideas and information
obtained from research, one should be
getting forward to a good solution.
7. SELECT PREFERRED SOLUTION: At this time,
a decision must be made. One must decide
which solution to develop. Often at time one
cannot get the best solution since another
person may still improve on the work in
future.
8. PREPARE WORKING DRAWINGS AND PLAN
AHEAD: The working drawing of the selected
design should be prepared, and must contain
detail measurements which are important to
its construction. Also, one should be
conscious of time so as to complete the work
within the specified time.
9. CONSTRUCT A PROTOTYPE: Prototype is the
name given to the first production in
manufacturing industry, a prototype is
always built first, and a final product is a
development of it. Enough time is really
devoted on the design to try to meet the
specification. The prototype could also be
referred to as a model.
10. TEST AND EVALUATE THE DESIGN: The
prototype will now be tested to see if it
actually solves the identified problem in the
specification. Not all designs are perfectly
okay initially, but one can ask series of
questions such as “is the design reliable“?,
can it be used safely?, etc. so as to make the
design project work successfully.
11. WRITE A REPORT: Lastly, a report must be
written on the project. In school work, the
report is all about analyzing, planning,
designing, carrying out practical work,
evaluating and outcome.
