ASSIGNMENT 02
Due date: Thursday, 20 June 2024
Total Marks: 65
This assignment covers chapters 1 & 2 of the prescribed book and the study guide,
it is specifically based on Sections 1.1 - 1.7 of Chapter 1 and Chapter 2
Question 1: 9 Marks
(1.1) Suppose that A, B, C, and D are matrices with the following sizes: (2)
A B C D
(4 × 1), (4 × 5), (3 × 3), (3 × 5)
Determine whether or not the given matrix expression is defined. If it is, then provide the size
of the resulting matrix. Otherwise, clearly state the reasons why.
At (D t B)t − αB(CD t )t ,
where α is a real number and X t stands for the transpose of the matrix X .
Give an example of matrices, A, B, C and D such that each product D t B and CD t is not
defined.
(1.2) Assume that A and B are non-singular matrices of the same order. Solve for X in the matrix (2)
equation below
t
B(X t − I)t A + B = At ,
(1.3) Let A and B be two matrices of the same size. Prove that (3)
A(A−1 + B −1 )B = A + B
(1.4) Let A be an n × n matrix. Prove that A satisfy the given matrix equation (2)

Question 2: 5 Marks
a d 1 c −d
Use the elementary row operations to prove that if is invertible then its inverse is .
b c ac − bd −b a
Find the conditions on a, b, c, d such that this is true.
Question 3: 10 Marks
Consider the matrices
1 1 2 −2 1 1 1 0 1
A = 1 −1 1 , B = 0 1 −1 , C = 2 1 −1 .
−2 1 0 −1 1 2 1 −1 0
Verify the following expressions (where possible and give reasons)
αAt (BC)−1 + β(AB − C)t = α(At C −1 )B −1 + βB t At − βC t , where α = −2 and β = 3. Compute all the
minors and co-factors where necessary before finding the inverses.
Question 4: 9 Marks
(4.2) Solve for the matrix A in the matrix equation below (3)

1 1 0
A −1 1 1 0 1
1 =
0 1 −1
2 1 −1
Question 5: 11 Marks
(5.1) (6)
Consider the given matrix
0 −1 1
D= 1 1 1 .
1 1 0
Find det D and use it to determine whether D is invertible or not and if so, then use the matrix
equation DX = I to find D −1 .

(5.2) Consider the following augmented matrix (3)
1 −1 2 1
3 −1 5 −2 .
2
−4 2 k − 8 k + 2
(iii) no solution.
(5.3) Find the values of u, x, y and z such the matrix A is symmetric, where (2)
0 0 u
A = 0 2x − 3y + z 3x − 5y + 5z .
2 0 5x − 8y + 6z
Question 6: 10 Marks
(6.1) Assume that A is a square matrix with a row of zeros. Prove that A is singular. (3)
(6.2) Assume that A and B are matrix of the same size. Prove or Disprove that (A + B)2 is a (3)
symmetric, skew-symmetric or neither.
(6.3) Find the condition (if possible) for which (AAt )t and (A + At )t would be symmetric. (4)
Question 7: 6 Marks
(7.1) E0 A = B, (1)
(7.2) E1 B = A, (1)
(7.3) E2 A = C, (1)

(7.5) E4 D = C. (1)
(7.6) E4 G = D. (1)
Question 8: 5 Marks
Use Cramer’s rule to solve for u without solving for x, y and z in the system
2u + x + y + z = 3
−8u − 7x − 3y + 5z = −3
