6. REVIEW THE PAST LESSON

 Before we start our new lesson, who can recap Our topic last meeting sir, we have tackled
our topic yesterday? about conversion of units

 Very good, you did learn our lesson. (Many students will raise their hands)

 Okay, yesterday we have discussed about 12 inches is equivalent to 1 foot sir.

conversion of units. Okay, let us see if you still
remember. Convert 12 inches to foot.

 Yes, very good!

 Now, I can say that you have learned from our

discussion yesterday. It’s a piece of lumber sir.

B. MOTIVATION:
(Students will raise their hands)
 What is this class? I will show up a piece of
wood/lumber

 Yes, class.
The door is made of lumber sir.
 Very good!
The chairs, tables, and cabinets are also
made of lumber materials.
 Can you see things inside this classroom that
are made of woods/lumber? (Many students will raise their hands)
 Yes, The lumber used in making chairs, tables,
and door are different. Some lumbers are
 Correct, What else? Yes. small, some are wide, some are medium-sized,
some are long and some are short.
 What have you noticed to the sizes of the
lumber used in making chairs, tables, doors,
etc.?

 Okay, what you have noticed?

No, sir.
 Very good observation, since you have
mentioned about small, wide, medium-sized,
long and short lumber.
(Reading of Objectives)
 Class, do you have an idea on how to calculate
the board foot lumber? Objectives:

C. LESSON PROPER

CALCULATING BOARDFOOT OF LUMBER

Is a way to measure the volume of lumber. One

board foot is a unit of measurement equal to a
board that is 1 inch thick,12 inches wide, and 1
foot long. To calculate board feet, you multiply the
length (in feet) by the width (in inches) by the
thickness (in inches) and then divide by 12

A board foot is actually one square foot of

lumber of one inch thick

Now, when you are taking about calculating board

foot of the lumber, you need to measure its

Yes Sir.

T = Thickness in inches

W= Width in inches

L = Length in feet
(students will raise their hands)
Do you understand class?

Very good! Here sir. (Pointing the area of “Thickness”

So, let us proceed to our lesson. (Students will raise their hands)

Here Sir. (Pointing the area of “Width”

I will show up again the lumber
(Students will raise their hands)
In this lumber, which do you think is the
thickness? Yes, please come in front and pointing Here sir. (Pointing the area of “Length
“Thickness” on the area you are referring to.

Okay, very good, how about the width of the The students will recite in chorus and

lumber?

Yes Sir. Because if we know the thickness, the

Okay, student A please come here in front and
width and the length part of the lumber
pointing of “Width” on you are referring to materials we can take the calculating
correctly.
You are right. How about the length?

Very good.
Students will say: Pull-push rule sir.
So again, which is the thickness, the width and the
length of this lumber?
Yes Sir.
Do you think it is important to identify the
thickness, the width and the length of the lumber
materials in calculating?
Yes sir.
Very good, Okay, let us start calculate the board
foot of this sample lumber material. What are we
going to use in measuring it?

Yes, very good.

I know you have learned how to use the pull-push

rule because we have tackled that before..

Very good.

Now, I will give you an example of how to measure

the lumber and calculate the board foot of a lumber
The formula used in computing board foot is:

Board foot (Bd. Ft.) = T x W x L

12

Where:

T = Thickness in inches

W= Width in inches

L = Length in feet

Note: This formula is being used for sawed wood

of commercial dimension.

Example: Calculate the board foot of lumber whose

dimension is 2” x 4 “x 12’

Steps 1. Identify the given data

Given. T = 2”

W = 4”

L = 12’

Step 2. Determine what is being asked

Find the Bd. Ft. =?

Step 3. State the formula

Yes, Sir!
Formula: Bd. Ft. = T x W x L None so far sir!

12 Yes sir.

Step 4. Substitute the given data in the formula, (Students will raise their hands)
then solve.

Solution: Steps 1. Identify the given data

Bd. Ft. = T x W x L Given. T = 1”

12; W = 6”

= 2” x 4” x 12’ L = 24’

12 Step 2. Determine what is being asked

= 96/12
Find the Bd. Ft. =?
= 8 Bd. Ft
Step 3. State the formula
Do you understand class?
Formula: Bd. Ft. = T x W x L

12
Do you have any question, class?
Step 4. Substitute the given data in the
Do you understand class? formula, then solve.

Now let us see, if you already understand. who can Solution:

try to calculate another example? board foot of
lumber whose dimension is 1” x 6 “x 24” Bd. Ft. = T x W x L

Yes, come in front 12

= 1” x 6” x 24’

12

= 144/12

= 12 Bd. Ft

Formula: Bd. Ft. = T x W x L

12

None sir.

Yes, sir!
(Students are doing their assigned activity and
collaborating with their respective groups)

Okay, very good.

Do you have any questions or clarifications from

the group.

D. APPLICATION:
So now, since you have already understood our
discussion, let’s proceed to your activity.

I will group you into two and then, you are going to look
around this classroom and look for something that is made
of lumber materials and it is possible to take its dimensions. I
will provide each group a push-pull rule. You only have to
provide at least three (3). I will give you 15 minutes to do this
activity and write in manila paper the specific lumber you
had measure of its dimensions and calculate of board foot.
After 15 minutes your work will be present in front. Your
activity will be graded base from the given criteria below:

(Students are clapping their hands)

Good luck and you may start now

Okay, time is up. You may now group 1 present here in front
and after the group 2
Afterwards, the teacher will ask if group 1 is correct
not). Okay, the group 1 is correct and also group 2
Congratulations group 1 and group 2, job well
done. (Students raise their hands)

E. Generalization:

Okay, I have here several pieces of lumber

materials. Let us see have an exercise in order for
you to master taking dimension. I will call four
representatives to measure these four lumber
materials. After you have measured it, you are (The students will measure the dimensions,
going to write its dimension on the board and write it on the board and they calculate the
calculate it into a board foot of lumber. Is the board foot of a lumber)
instruction clear class?

Okay, who wants to try?

Please come in front Students, will give you the

different sizes of lumber materials

Okay let us check your work one by one. I will

measure the lumber used by student A, B, C, and
D. Afterwards, I will ask the student one by one.
Okay, all of you were correct. Good job!

Now, I can say that you have learned from our

discussion this afternoon.

IV. Evaluation
