ANATOMY OF THE PANCREAS AND

SPLEEN
Elongated
Exocrine & structure lies
endocrine in the
gland epigastrum &
left upper
quadrant.

Soft, Crosses the

lobulated, transpyloric
retroperitone plane
al organ.
Divided into:
⮚ Head
▪ disc shaped. NECK

▪ lies within the

concavity ( C shaped)
of the duodenum.

⮚ Neck:
▪ constricted portion.
▪ connect head to body.
▪ lies in front of the
beginning of the portal v.
& the origin of the sup.
mes. art. from the aorta.

⮚ Body:
▪ runs upward & to the Lt.
▪ somewhat triangular in
cross section.
⮚ Tail:
▪ pass forward in the
splenorenal lig.
▪ in contact with the hilum
of the spleen.*

PANCREATIC DUCT

Main pancreatic duct (of

Wirsung):
▪ begins at the tail.
▪ runs along the length of the
gland.
▪ receives numerous Accessory
pancreatic duct
tributaries.
Main pancreatic duct
▪ Connects with the bile duct
to form the
hepatopancreatic duct =
ampulla of Vater
▪ Flow through of the
ampulla of Vater is
controlled by the Sphincter
of Oddi.
▪ opens into the 2nd part of
the duodenum at about
its middle with the bile
duct on the major
duodenal papilla.
Accessory duct (of Santorini):
▪ drains the upper part of the gland.
▪ opens into the duodenum a short distance above the main
duct on the minor duodenal papilla.
BLOOD SUPPLY OF THE PANCREAS

Arteries:
▪ splenic art.
▪ sup. & inf.
pancreaticod
uodenal art.
Veins:
▪ correspond to
the arteries &
drain to the
portal system.*
LYMPH DRAINAGE OF THE PANCREAS

lymph nodes along the arteries & drain into

the celiac & sup. mes. nodes.
