Introduction
There are different types of jigs and each one is made for a specific job. Many jigs are
created because there is an imperative to do so by the tradesperson some are made to increase
productivity through consistency, to do repetitive task or to do a job more precisely.
Jigs are made for frequent use or may be improvised from scrap for a particular project
depending on the task.
The drill jigs eliminate frequent checking, individual marking and positioning. This increases
productivity and reduces operation time.
Jigs are made from a variety of materials, some of which can be hardened to resist wear. The
materials often used in jigs are steel, iron, nylon, fiber and bronze.
Scope of the project
The scope of the project is only to identify parts, draw them in
detail and assemble them to make them functional.
What is Indexing drill jig?
It is a supporting device which holds the work, guides the tool and also locating work piece
in its position during machining/drilling process.
The main purpose of indexing drill jig is to eliminate the process of marking on the work
piece according to the dimensions provided before machining the component and thus the
high accuracy is achieved.
This tool is needed to make sure that the production line is going smoother and easier for the
operators doing their job in manufacturing process. Processing or in operation, jig helps o
operator by holding the work piece. Production rate can be achieved by using jigs, which
increases the productivity by minimizing the production time.
If possible, the automation of indexing drill jig is done to, increase the production rate and
labor productivity, improve the worker safety, improve the product quality and reduce the
manufacturing lead time and it is highly recommended to do so.
Working principle of indexing drill jig
It works based on angular rotation principle. Here are the following steps needs to be followed:
1. An indexing drill jig typically consists of a circular plate with evenly spaced holes or
slots.
2. The work piece is securely clamped to the jig.
3. The jig is rotated to position the desired hole or slot in alignment with the drill bit.
4. The drill bit is then used to create the hole in the work piece.
The indexing mechanism ensures precise angular positioning for each hole.
Components or parts of Indexing drill jig
The following are parts or components of Indexing drill jig with their detail drawing which
makes it functional for specific task.
As we see from the figure, there are thirteen parts that is listed on material bills. But there are
also additional parts which must be added in order to make the device functional. The first part
to be added beside thirteen parts is the one which hold drill slip bush and I call it “Shoulder
screw”. The other part which is on the drawing but not listed on the material’s bill is the one
which holds the ball and the spring inside ball catch assembly and I call it “Spring ball bolt”.
Application areas of Indexing drill jig
Indexing drill jigs are commonly used in various industries, including manufacturing,
aerospace, and automotive.
They are ideal for creating evenly spaced holes in components such as gears, pulleys,
and flanges.
