The Reluctant Fundamentalist is a novel by Pakistani author, Mohsin Hamid, published in
2007. As depicted in the movie, Changez, a young Pakistani from elite class in Lahore but with
dwindling affluence, gets admitted to Princeton in US. After completing his bachelor’s degree in
Finance, he joins Underwood Samson, a consultancy firm, as an analyst. He also meets Erica, an
aspiring writer, and is instantly smitten by her charm. In his professional life, he gets high
recommendations of his superior, Jim, who had recruited him. Changez’s brilliance prompts the
firm to send him to offshore assignments, but after initial success, he finally returns to New York
without completing the last assignment and ends up losing his job. After returning to Lahore, he
becomes a professor of finance at a local university.
