Subject: Chemistry

Chemistry can be fun, especially if it’s introduced early in life through experimentation.
There are some fun activities included in summer tasks so that you can explore the learnt
concepts in detail through fun learning. The first activity is about chromatography.

T-SHIRT CHROMATOGRAPHY
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
WHAT IS CHROMATOGRAPHY?
Chromatography is:
A method of separating the substances in a mixture by the rate they move through or
along a medium.
Which is just a fancy way of saying that chromatography is a way of separating
substances along some type of filter material, like a t-shirt or a coffee filter.
Scientists use a solvent, which will dissolve all the molecules in a mixture. For this method
to work, the molecules in the mixture need to be different sizes. This is so that the solvent
can carry the molecules along the filter material at different rates.
Basically, the smaller the molecule is, the farther a solvent will carry it. In this way,
chromatography can separate the molecules in a mixture according to their size.
Additional Vocabulary
▪ Molecule– A substance which is made up of two or more elements that are
chemically bonded.
▪ Mixture – A combination of two or more elements or compounds that are not
chemically combined.
▪ Solvent – The substance in which the solute dissolves to form a solution, typically a
liquid.
T-SHIRT CHROMATOGRAPHY ACTIVITY
MATERIALS
▪ White t-shirt
▪ Isopropyl Alcohol (80% or above)
▪ Eyedropper
▪ Coffee can (or a wide-mouthed jar or bowl)
▪ Rubber band
▪ Permanent markers in a variety of colors
▪ Newspaper

Summer Vacations Task 2024 Page 4 of 13 Class O Level

PROCEDURE
1. Lay a few newspapers down on your work surface. Now, you have to create a
design with different colored dots. Their design should stay within a 2 to 3 in radius
as the design will spread out quite a bit.
2. Next, place the part of the design over the center of the coffee can and secure it will
rubber bands.
3. Then, use the eye dropper to drop several drops of the alcohol in the center of the
design and watch what happens! If the spreading out stops before the end of the
can is reached, add a few more drops of alcohol. (Note You should do this step in a
well-ventilated area.)
4. Repeat over and over again until the t-shirt is full of your’ designs.
5. Let it dry overnight, put the T-shirt on, and wear your experiment for everyone to
see! (Note –You can soak the t-shirt in saltwater to help set the colors.)
RESULTS AND EXPLANATION
The students should see that as the alcohol spreads out, it picks up part of the ink and
spreads it out – creating a beautiful design. Markers are made up of several different
types of ink, which is soluble in isopropyl alcohol.
The alcohol picks up the molecules of ink and carries them along the filter paper. Some of
these ink molecules are heavier than the others. So, it separates the ink into different
colors by depositing the heavier molecules sooner than the lighter ones.
TAKE IT FURTHER
If you have want to explore further, you may try this experiment again using a coffee filter.
This time have to compare the difference between using water and alcohol as solvents.
Did the colors separate in the same way? Did they travel the same distances?
You could also try different brands of markers to see if the results are different than the
ones you originally used.
MORE CHROMATOGRAPHY FUN
Here’s a few more activities that use chromatography: You can try them at home to
explore in detail.

Creating your own Indicator

Acid tests are always fun because of the color changes. In addition, it’s a great way to test
that science is all around us, even in the kitchen!
Kitchen Acid Test:
For this experiment you will need to make your own indicator, which will need to cool
before you can use it. You will need a head a red cabbage and a variety of foods from
your kitchen to test, such as lemon juice, baking soda, soda or detergent.
Steps to Complete:
1. Make your indicator solution. (Adults need to do this step.) Chop up your head of
cabbage and boil it in water for 15 minutes. Drain your cabbage through a sieve,
taking care to save the water in a container. (Use caution when doing this step
as the water will be very hot!) Set the water aside and let cool for several hours.
2. Pour a little bit of indicator solution into a several glasses. Set one glass aside to
use as your control.
3. Add several drops of the substance you are testing to a cup. Repeat for each of
your substances. (Use caution when doing this step as some substances like
bleach can damage clothing.)
4. Mix thoroughly and check against the control to see if there was a color change.

Red Cabbage Juice as an pH Indicator

Results: Try different materials at home and check whether they are acidic/base/
neutral and compile your result in tabular form
If your solution did not change color, the substance is neutral.
If your solution turned a light red-purple, the substance was a weak acid.
If your solution was red, the substance was a strong acid.
If your solution turned blue, the substance was a weak base.
If your solution was blue -green, the substance was a strong base.
Explanation:
The red cabbage acts as an indicator, meaning that it changes color in the presence of an
acid or a base. A typical kitchen is full of weak acids, such as vinegar, and weak bases,
such as baking soda. Acids normally taste sour and can be corrosive. Although there are
many safe acids & bases in your kitchen, as a general rule you should avoid touching
acids or bases without the proper protection.
Take It Further:
Take one of your acidic solutions and add a few drops of one of the weak bases you
tested. You should see that they neutralize one another, meaning the indicator turns back
to the color of the control.

Sportsmen such as wrestlers and weightlifters eat dozens of raw eggs to build up their
