Operation & Preventative Maintenance

TELSMITH VIBRATING EQUIPMENT

Vibrating Grizzly Feeders
• Why have a Vibrating Grizzly Feeder (VGF)?

The VGF has 3 functions:

1. Absorb the impact from the dump
(loader fed or truck dump)
2. Allows adjustment to provide proper
feed rate to Jaw Crusher
3. Separate the Coarse and Fine material

Grizzly Feeder Function

• Vibrator has 2, gear timed shafts that create a near straight

line stroke (typically 45 deg).
• Vibration conveys material down the length of the pan
toward the grizzly section.
• Typical travel rate: 25 to 40 ft per minute
• Speed is varied to increase/decrease feed rate. RPM is 450-
850 RPM Max.
Feed Material Before the Grizzly Bars
Ideally dumped material should come to rest
before the grizzly bars:
• Allows stratification
• Manages bed depth
• Improves scalping efficiency
• Improves plant production
There is a VGF in there somewhere…
Proper feed for Grizzly Bars
Dumping onto the grizzly
bars drives material
between the bars
increasing plugging and
ultimately causing
breakage.

Tools Needed
• (2) ¾”-10 x 12” all thread
• (4) ¾”-10 flat washers and nuts
• (1) 24” length of 3”x3”x3/16” angle
• 1-5/16” wrench/socket
• 1-1/8” wrench/socket
• 1” wrench/socket
• 15/16” wrench/socket
• 13/16” wrench/socket
• 9/16” wrench/socket
• ½” impact gun
• Slide hammer with ½” tip
• Torque multiplier
• Torque wrench
• Come-Along
• Remove sheave
• Remove both end
covers
• Remove seal from
drive
• Check the gears for
wear and damage
before disassembly
(check backlash). Order
new gears if necessary
• With the covers and
drive sheave removed,
on the gear side, make
the first timing mark as
shown with a marker.
• Mark the left and right
gears as shown.
• On the gear end, cut the
safety wire and remove the
R-shaft end cap.
• Install the shaft lever to the
end of the R-shaft as
shown.
• With the lever, rotate
the shaft until the
counterweight side of
the left shaft is facing
up.
• Thread the ¾” all thread
into the shaft as shown.
• Once the shaft is
secured, make the
second set of timing
marks with sharpie as
shown.
• With one person
holding the lever, a
second person can now
install the slide hammer
and remove the hugger
key from the R-gear
(keys should not be re-
used).
• The R-shaft can now be
rotated up free of the
gear to install the all
thread.
• With both shafts safely
secured, the R-gear can
now be removed from
the shaft.
• The L-shaft end cap and
hugger key can now be
removed.
• The L-gear can now be
removed
• Bend tabs from nut
locks flat as shown.
• Remove all but two
bearing retainer
nuts/bolts with
impact.
• Back off the two
bearing retainer nuts
approx half way.
• Install jack bolts on
bearing retainer and
slide out retainer
approx. 1” from the tub.
• Install eye bolt on
housing as shown.
Connect come-along to
eye bolt.
• You can now remove
the two remaining nuts
and remove the bearing
retainer.
• Remove safety wire
from bearing
retainer ring bolts.
• Now remove bolts
from bearing
retainer ring.
• With retainer ring
removed, you can now
flip over the housing
and place on a press.
• Make a plate to fit
across the front side of
the bearing’s outer race
(as shown) and press
the bearing out of the
back side of the
housing.
• Inspect housing after bearing
removal
• It is recommended to check the
ID of the housing by using a
micrometer
• If the ID is too large or out of
round, the housing should be
changed or repaired before
new bearing installation
• Inspect and mic. journals on
shafts to make sure they are
not undersized.
• Repair/replace shaft if
necessary.

• Press new bearing into
housing.
• Check with a feeler gauge
to make sure it has
bottomed out
• Bolt bearing retainer on
and secure bolts with
safety wire
• Once the retainer ring is
installed and safety wired,
you can now install the
bearing/retainer into the
tub. The shaft should
already be aligned.
• Torque bearing retainer
bolts to recommended
specs (see manual).
• Bend lock tabs over nuts.
• Once installed, check
internal bearing
clearance between roller
and outer race
• Once all bearings are in
and bolted in place, use a
dial indicator to check the
end play
• Install the L-gear onto the
shaft.
• Install new hugger key and
end cap to L-gear
• Install R-gear onto R-shaft,
matching the second set of
timing marks from both
gears to one another.
• The keyways for the R-
gear/shaft will not match
up.
• Attach the lever to the R-
shaft.
• Check backlash with
feeler gauge
• Holding the lever,
unscrew the all thread
from the R-shaft and
3”angle tool.
• Slowly turn the R- shaft
until both keyways line
up and install the
hugger key. Please note,
their will be weight on
the lever/shaft.
• Unscrew the all
thread from the L-
shaft and slowly turn
lever until machine is
at rest.
• The gears will go to
the first sharpie
marks as shown.
• The machine is now
timed.
• Remove the lever and install
the R- shaft end cap.
• Torque bolts to spec for end
cap and safety wire.
• Install new side cover gasket
and the side cover to the gear
