Unconference After-Action - 2nd Annual MOBILE MEDICAL INNOVATION ROUNDTABLE

The Mobile Medical Innovation Roundtable -- our profession's first UNCONFERENCE, where invited attendees deliver content that is interesting *to them* -- was held in December 2023. This after-action recap highlights from this otherwise off-record event (with the exception of a recorded podcast about Responder mental wellness & health). The UNCONFERENCE has produced more joy than we could have hoped for: relationships, collaborations, speaking engagements, even job offers! Save the date for 2024.

Michael Touchstone
Fire Paramedic Deputy Chief,
EMS Operations (Ret.)
Philadelphia Fire Dept.

If there is one thing that Mike believed in, it was the

power of dialogue as a predicate to professionalism.

He wanted to join us for this event but was prevented

by his health. However, his wisdom permeated several
of our presentations, and it will continue to inspire us.
LESSONS WE LEARNED IN 2023

• If we close ourselves off to difficult

discussions taking place in controlled
settings, then we open ourselves to
such discussions in public settings.
Fostering dialogue in private prepares
us for difficult discussions in public.

• Will CP/MIH be Mobile Medicine’s

“savior” or merely an adjunct function
— related to but separate from what
our profession has done for decades?

• Have we considered how Community

Paramedicine affects Responders who
get to know their patients over time?
• Leadership is about open and honest
communication with your staff—a an
approach that is vital to long term
success. How can you hold your staff
accountable to unclear expectations?

• We should ask our state, hospital, and

health information exchange partners
for access to insights that facilitate both
patient care and crew safety, using
innovations that travel with the patient.

• Data standards like NEMSIS and the

new NERIS form our bedrock of
dialogue across the care continuum.
But standards may not be enough:
One also needs to understanding their
purpose, to blend it with one’s own.
• Critical clinical insights (including end-
of-life wishes and special health needs)
are vital to Mobile Medicine. Can we
find and access the data at the patient’s
side in real-time, when we need them?

• We are rarely alone in our traumas—

and yet we leave our families to wade
through alone. Who do they talk to?

• Care providers’ mental well-being

should start well before the traumatic
incident. We wait to treat a problem
instead of providing care to avoid the
problem. Why do we forsake the care
that Responders’ families need?
• Data are money! How much of both
(data and money) are you leaving on
the table? How is doing so impacting
your plans? We know we can gather
data and package them up to collect
monies for work performed. But we
need to recognize that failure to ensure
data quality sacrifices (lots of) cash.

• We have seen programs transcend the

ordinary by using a combination of
both data and emotion to tell stories.

• We know that we learn from every

patient interaction. What if we also
used PCRs to keep Responders safe?
TESTIMONIALS: MEANINGFUL
Collaborations START HERE
"My team and I from Before Operational Stress Inc., were thrilled to attend the
2023 Mobile Medicine Innovation Roundtable Unconference, held in San
Antonio, TX in December. This was our first time as participants of and
presenters at this event and it was a truly memorable experience. The
audience was full of individuals committed to bettering the world for others,
and we were honoured to be in the presence of such esteemed colleagues as
we discussed our proactive training programs for first responders and their
families.

The benefits of the Unconference were experienced throughout our time at

the event, but importantly have continued on in the months following. We
had the opportunity to connect with organizational and community leaders at
the event and subsequently, and have formed lasting collaborative
relationships with stakeholders from diverse regions and industries across the
United States. This was a wonderful experience, and time well spent. Thank
you to Jonathon and the team at Beyond Lucid for hosting and for inviting us to
participate."

“I wanted to take an opportunity and tell you guys about the amazing
experience we had at Beyond Lucid's Unconference last year in California. The
informal nature of how this conference was conducted created
unprecedented opportunities for us to network and make new friends. As a
direct result of the networking opportunity, the South Carolina EMS
Association has brought on new vendor members, changed the scope of some
of our speaking engagements that we have coming up in the future, and made
long-lasting relationships that are helping drive the policy and direction of our
association. I would highly recommend that anyone who has an interest in the
future of South Carolina EMS or any state's EMS participate in the next
upcoming Beyond Lucid Unconference. Hope to see you guys there — I'm sure
that South Carolina will be in attendance as well. “
