10. A pharmaceutical company produces 3 types of influenza vaccines, namely Type A, B and C vaccines,
to cater to different age groups of patients in a local hospital. It is known that the manufacturing cost of
a Type C vaccine is twice that of a Type A vaccine while the total manufacturing cost of a Type A
vaccine and a Type C vaccine is twice the cost of a Type B vaccine. Furthermore, the total
manufacturing cost of 2 Type A vaccines, 4 Type B vaccines and 3 Type C vaccines is $420.
(i) By forming three linear equations, find the manufacturing cost of each type of vaccine. [4]
The local government mandated the sale of vaccines to local hospitals to be at most $80 per vaccine by
the pharmaceutical company.
(ii) Find the maximum profit the company can earn in fulfilling an order of 200 Type A vaccines, 500
Type B vaccines and 1000 Type C vaccines for the local hospital. [2]
[You may assume Profit = Selling Price  Manufacturing Cost]
The CEO of the pharmaceutical company decides to embark on the production of a more effective Type
D vaccine. With his team of sales analysts, they predict that the profit $P per Type D vaccine will be
related to the manufacturing cost ($x) per vaccine by the equation P  1.2 x 10  x .  
(iii) Sketch the graph of P against x and find the maximum value of P. State also the corresponding
value of x for which this maximum value occurs. [3]

$60 per vaccine. [1]

11. A company manufactures and sells air purifiers. After much research and market analysis, the Chief
Executive Officer predicts that the relationship between the weekly revenue, R, of the sales of the air
purifiers (in ten thousands dollars) and the time, t weeks from the start of the sales of the air purifiers
can be modelled by the equation
R  25ln(0.25t  1)  0.04t 2 .
(i) Sketch the graph of R against t, for 0  t  30 , stating clearly the coordinates of the axial intercepts
and end points. [2]
(ii) Using differentiation, determine the value of t, to the nearest week, for which the company is
earning the maximum weekly revenue. [4]

(iii) Use your calculator to find the value of explain in the
0
context of the question what this value represents. [2]
The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a measure of the density of pollutants in the air, with a higher AQI
indicating greater level of air pollution and hence a greater health concern. A ‘good’ AQI level of an
environment is in the range of 0 to 50.
The manufacturing company claims that a particular model of their air purifiers can bring the AQI of a
room to a ‘good’ level within minutes after its use. For a room with initial AQI close to 100, the AQI in
the room Q, x minutes after the use of the air purifier can be modelled by the equation
70
Q  100  .
1  e50.25 x
(iv) State the eventual AQI of the room when the air purifier has been used for a long period of time.
Hence, sketch the graph of Q against x. State clearly the equation of any asymptotes or coordinates
of any axial intercepts. [2]
(v) Find the minimum duration of the use of the air purifier for the room to reach a ‘good’ AQI level.[2]

12. (a) A factory produces cylindrical cans for soft drinks. The company aims to maximise its profit
margin by minimising the amount of materials used to manufacture each can. Each can has a fixed
volume of V cm3.
Let the radius of the base of a can be r cm.
2V
(i) Show that the total surface area A (in cm2) of each can is given by A   2πr 2 . State any
r
assumption made. [3]
(ii) Hence determine, in terms of V, the exact value of r which gives the minimum value of A. [4]

(b)

A water container shown above is in the shape of a right cone. It has base radius of x cm and
height of 30 cm. When fully filled, it contains 900 cm3 of water.
Water is leaking from a small hole at the base of the container at a rate of 5 cm 3 per second. At
time t seconds, the radius of the top water surface and the depth of the water are a cm and h cm
respectively.
Find the rate of change of the height of the water level at the instant when the radius of the top
water surface is half the base radius of the cone. [5]

3 A chef plans to stock up on frozen beef for his restaurant. He plans to purchase three types of beef,
namely Striploin, Ribeye and Tenderloin. The weight of Tenderloin he needs to purchase is twice the
combined weight of the other two types of beef he needs to purchase.
He sources out three butcheries A, B and C. The table below shows the usual price per kg for each type
of beef sold at each butchery as well as the total amount payable by the chef based on the usual prices.
For example, if he purchases from C, then $k is the total amount payable by the chef.
