VARIABLES PROVIDED BY EACH MEMBER:
Estoconing, Jerhon Jesus D.
• Emotional Trauma
The bomb that exploded at Davao airport killed 22 people, physically injured 155 others, and
traumatized thousands more. Even among those who weren't anywhere near the explosions, the
catastrophe will leave a legacy of emotional scars in addition he physical ones. People who were
close to the blasts saw horrifically hurt children, shattered corpses, and amputated limbs.
• Lack of security
Lack of security is one of the reasons the incident occurred at Davao airport. The bomb could have
been found or monitored ahead before it exploded.
The absence of security cameras, entry badges, alarms, and other protection measures can
seriously harm people, especially tourists. If airport security is successful that day, the likelihood of
any dangerous situation or threat entering an airport is significantly decreased.
• Adding Security Checkpoints
In order to have well and safety travel in Davao Airport, adding security checkpoints is a must!
These are meant to stop forbidden objects and other threats from accessing the sterile area of the
airport and are developed in response to information on threats to transportation security.
This way any dangerous and illegal activity will be detected and be avoided before anything bad
happens.
Estrada, Ana Marie T.
• Hypervigilance
People who witnessed the bombing that day will become hypervigilant.
• Physical Barriers
Physical barriers can help increase the separation between vehicles and buildings or crowds. These
barriers would reduce the population density of an area a vehicle bomb could affect, and they could
reduce the secondary damage from structural failures.
• Harden Structures
Potential casualties from a bomb attack could be greatly reduced through structural modifications.
• Secure Terminal Areas
The greatest risks for casualties for most types of attacks are in the high-density areas passengers
encounter before reaching the security checkpoint, particularly lines for ticketing and for passing
the security checkpoint.
Garcia, Jayne Ann C.
• Terrorist Threat
Is a threat to commit a crime of violence or a threat to cause bodily injury to another person and
terrorization as the result of the proscribed conduct. This means that it is a doing of a person
(terrorist) that might harm another person (civilian).
• Lack of State Penetration
Sometimes a state doesn't provide enough knowledge and awareness to the people within the state
which leads to bigger damage and loss.
• Emotional Health
Emotional health is about how we think and feel. It is about the well-being of wellbeing, our ability
to cope with life events, and how we acknowledge our own emotions as well as those of others. I
consider this as a variable because I know that when someone experiences a bombing, he/she will
experience fear or anxiety, or worst trauma which is directly related to the emotional health of a
person.
• Increased Safety Awareness
When bad things happen, or when we experience bad things like bombing or terrorist attacks, we
humans tend to be automatically more aware and more sensitive when it comes to our own safety
as well as the safety of our loved ones. Just like what happened in the last few months wherein the
cases of kidnapping and holdapping are increasing, we tend to be more cautious every time we go
outside or travel. We also remind our loved ones always to keep safe wherever they are.
Pagbunocan, Ma. Elizabeth M.
• Bombing/Explosion
This variable is the main one. A rebel exploded a bomb, killing himself, and 20 others, and injuring
more than 150, in a waiting lounge near the main terminal of the Davao International Airport in
Davao, Philippines. An American missionary from Iowa was among those killed; another American
missionary and her two children were injured. A leader of the Al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf Group
(ASG) claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Philippines government rejected the claim,
instead blaming the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
• Life-threatening
Terrorist attacks are life-threatening. It may cause death and destruction to the people. The lives of
the people cannot be restored once it has been lost. It is better to be vigilant and provide tightened
security to ensure the safety of people.
• Airport Security
Airport security attempts to prevent any threats or potentially dangerous situations from arising or
entering the country. If airport security does succeed then the chances of any dangerous situation,
illegal items, or threats entering an aircraft, country, or airport are greatly reduced. It seems
obvious that air travel would not have evolved the way it has in recent years if it weren't secure and
if passengers hadn't trusted that their flight would arrive at its destination without any life-
threatening incidents.
• Proper Information Dissemination
Information dissemination is very important because passengers or anyone who was involved in the
incident should know about what really happened. This will also be an opportunity to assure people
that their safety will be ensured.
• Tighten Security Measures
Security measures is a precaution taken against terrorism, espionage or other danger. Some of the
security measures that could be done are setting up a security system, using canine explosive dog
detection, hiring trained staffs, improving screening lanes, and adding pre-security checkpoints.
Pua, John Harvey A.
• Special Investigation Techniques
Techniques used to gather information, such as electronic or other forms of surveillance and
undercover operations, to not alert the target person and to detect and investigate terrorism and
bombing.
• Counterterrorism
Bombing and terrorism are one of the most significant threats to peace. We need to implement
effective counterterrorism to prevent and combat terrorism, as a serious crime that has no
justification, whatever its reason
• Travel document security
Many terrorist and criminal activities involve forged documents. Strengthening the security of travel
documents and their processes in line with international standards. Upgrading the technological
security features of passports and making sure that processes used to get an identity of an applicant
during the application are secure.
• Datamining
Searches for and processing personal data according to the characteristics of suspects.
Quibate, Chrisma V.
• Impact of attacks
A bomb in a backpack exploded in the busy waiting area of Francisco Bangoy International Airport in
Davao City on the Philippine Island of Mindanao. It killed 21 people, injured over 100 others, and
caused substantial damage to the building.
• Media reports
Press releases covering terrorism, as a result, journalists covering terrorist organizations and their
actions face significant difficulties. Journalists face the risk of giving terrorists the attention they
want when covering terrorism. And ever desire for news in real time can put journalists at risk of
escalating the terrorist threat, which is exacerbated by the quick information distribution on social
media.
• Security measures
All government measures for protecting the civil population from terrorist attacks. Given the
complexity, good coordination and cooperation across states and organizations, as well as within
national governments, is necessary to confront terrorism. Furthermore, the capacity of national
criminal justice systems to carry out effective preventive measures in line with the rule of law and
to administer fair and effective justice for terrorist crime perpetrators is a necessary for successfully
addressing the threats.
