Basa-Basi dengan Orang Lokal
Indonesian people are well-known to be friendly and they smile a lot. You will feel welcome
once you step your feet on the country of tens of thousands islands. They won’t hesitate to greet
you mister or ma’am from the side of the road with their hands waving at you, and a genuine
smile on their face. When you are in contact with them, usually this small talk will arise.

5. “Sudah berapa lama disini?”
Direct translation is “already long here?’. We don’t have tenses (present, past or
perfect), but we use adverbs to indicate the time things happen. Sudah is an indication
similar to ‘have been/had’ and used as a sign of completion. Also, we don’t have
auxiliary verbs such as ‘do/does’. For instance:

Grammar Note: Lesson 9
1. “Ma’af aku lagi sakit”
The word “lagi” is an indicator word that we use to talk about things happening at the
future). We simply add indicator word such as: kemarin (yesterday), hari ini (today), or
2. “Sudah ke dokter?”
Please see Grammar note lesson 8 no 1. The word “sudah” is an indicator word
showing that something is/has been completed. When translated to English, sudah
means already. Here are more examples:
Although mau means ‘want’, it can also mean ‘will’ in future context. In spoken words,
we rarely say ‘akan’ (will) as it sounds too formal, therefore, we use ‘mau’ more often for
future plan.
● Dia besok mau sewa motor: He wants/will rent a scooter tomorrow.
● Kalau tidak sibuk, aku mau bikin PR: When I’m not busy, I will do the homework.
If you see a VERB accessorised with a prefix [di-], it is a PASSIVE voice/form. Diminum
means then ‘to be taken’. The literal meaning for minum is to drink, however, in English
we would say ‘to take a medicine’ (minum obat) in this context. More examples for
● Baju itu diambil oleh pembeli lain: That clothes are taken by another buyer.
