TOURIST DESTINATIONS
1. BESAKIH TEMPLE
Besakih Temple is situated in Besakih village, Rendang sub district. It is near Mount Agung
to the South West. It is approximately 44 km from Amlapura, and 62 km from Denpasar.
Besakih Temple was once built in a holy village named Hulundang Basukih, which today is
known as Besakih Village.
2. TELAGA WAJA RIVER
Telaga Waja is a river that is located in Rendang Village, Rendang subdistrict. This river is an
excelent place for rafting activity. Its crystal clear water and big rocks along the river makes
Telaga Waja becomes a challenging spot for water sport lovers.
3. TULAMBEN
Tulamben is situated in Tulamben Village of Kubu sub district, approximately 102 km from
Denpasar, and about 25 km from Amlapura, the capital of Karangasem.
Tulamben Sea has been famous among domestic and international divers since long ago.
Enjoying Tulamben underwater panorama, we will find The USS Liberty shipwrecked that
sank in 1945. This area is also well known for its rich and beautiful underwater biota. When
visiting this shipwrecked, we will directly witness various underwater lives.
4. JEMELUK
Jemeluk is located in Purwakerti Village, Abang sub district. It is approximately 100 km from
Denpasar or about 21 km from Amlapura.
Jemeluk is an interesting place to enjoy underwater lives. Its crystal clear water will make us
enjoy the underwater panorama easier. Coral reefs in Jemeluk become another attraction for
visitors from around the world. The beautiful panorama of hills, valleys, and sea make
Jemeluk becomes famous among tourists. It is also famous for its traditional salt makers.
5. TIRTAGANGGA
Tirtagangga is located in Ababi Village, Abang sub district. It is about 83 km from Denpasar
and about 6 km from Amlapura to the north.
Tirtagangga was built in 1948 by Karangasem King, Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut
Karangasem. The construction of this water garden is a unique combination of Balinese and
Chinese architectures. Tirtagangga lies in 1.2 hectar land. The great heritage of Karangasem
Kingdom is famous for its water tower and the comforting atmosphere.
6. PURI AGUNG KARANGASEM
Puri Agung Karangasem or Karangasem Palace was built in the 19 th Century by Anak Agung
Gede Jelantik, the first King of Karangasem. This tourist destination is famous for its unique
architecture, which is the combination of Balinese, Chinese, and European architectures.
Karangasem Palace is located in Amlapura, approximately 78 km from Denpasar
This building was built when the King of Karangasem started to build a relationship with
Dutch government.
7. TAMAN SOEKASADA UJUNG
Ujung Water Palace is located in Tumbu Village of Karangasem sub district. It is about 85 km
from Ngurah Rai International Airport, and about 5 km from Amlapura, the capital of
Karangasem. Ujung Water Palace, which is also called Taman Soekasada Ujung by local
people, was built in 1919. It was built by the last king of Karangasem, I Gusti Bagus Jelantik,
who reigned as king of Karangasem from 1909 to 1945. Ujung Water palace was built to
welcome and serve kings from neighboring countries. It was also a recreation place for the
king and his family.
8. PANTAI CANDIDASA
Candidasa is located in Samuh Village of Karangasem sub district. It is about 65 km from
Denpasar, and about 12 km from Amlapura, the capital of Karangasem
Candidasa is widely known for its white sandy beach. From this area we will be able to see
Lombok island, and Nusa Penida island. Lights come from “jukung” (a traditional boat) at
night makes Candidasa sea even looks more beautiful,
9. SIBETAN AGRO TOURISM
Sibetan village, which is famous for its “salak” fruit (salacca), is located in Bebandem sub
district. It is about 83 km from Denpasar or about 15 km from Amlapura, the capital of
Karangasem. Sibetan is one tourist destination in Karangasem that offers a stunning
panorama. Its cool and fresh air makes “Salak” or salacca grows well in this area. In Sibetan,
visitor will be able to find several vegetation of salacca with various tastes. The lush salacca

10. Iseh
Iseh is situated in Iseh village, Sidemen sub district. It is about 52 km from Denpasar and
can be reached easily with public or private transportation.
Iseh has been known widely since years ago. From this area we can see the beautiful
panorama of Mount Agung with its valleys and the wonderful view of rice fields with its
crystal clear river flows thru them, where farmers work there every day.
11. Padangbai
Padangbai is located in a seafront settlement, and is surrounded by a bay called Padang.
Padangbai is lcocated in Padangbai village of Manggis subdistrict. It is about 53 km from
Amlapura, the capital Karangasem. Padangbai is also the door for visitors to come to Bali
and to leave Bali.
This area was developed as tourist destination for its attractions such as white sand, the
beautiful surrounding panorama, and the wonderful under water life.
12. Blue Lagoon Beach
Blue Lagoon is located in Padangbai village. It is the most popular beach with pristine white
and excellent warungs (eating houses) which serve you the catch of the day food and cold
drinks. This beach is small to lay on but comfortable beach beds are offred. The snorkeling
at Blue lagoon is very good. The main beach is the best location for families with small
children. There are no waves here so it is safe for your children to play in the water.
13. Bias Tugel Beach
Bias Tugel Beach is a small bay with a 130 meter stretch of white sand just south of the busy
Padangbai Harbour. The bay offers a tranquil scene that is made possible by a long and
narrow headland that obscures it from the hubbub of the nearby port. You can easily reach
the beach via a short trek past the cape from the main road. A beautiful seascape with calm
blue waves, rock pools and golden sand with streaks of volcanic black awaits. There are also
local vendors selling snacks, cold beers and parasols along this stretch of the coast.
14. White Sand Beach/Virgin Beach
White Sand Beach / Virgin Beach is located in Bugbug Village. The white sand of this beach
can be considered as one of the best ones in Bali. The beach still offers the visitors lovely scenery
and cleanliness. There are many things to do at Virgin beach. Snorkeling and swimming come as the
best thing that you can do in this beautiful beach. The sea can be rough sometimes, so you should be
very careful. When it comes to relax along the beach, you can use available umbrellas and deck
chairs.
15. Bukit Asah
Bukit Asah is located in Bugbug village, which is about 10 minutes from Candidasa. This
place is mostly visited for its beautiful panorama of hills and beach.
From this site, we will be able to enjoy the scenic view of white sand beach, Mount Agung,
and also the blue Indonesian ocean.
16. Putung
Putung is located in Duda Timur Village, Selat Sub district. It is about 64 km from Denpasar
and approximately 19 km from Amlapura. Putung becomes interesting for its wonderful
panorama. We can see hills and also sea in a distance. Putung is situated in hilly area that is
surrounded by big trees and lush salacca plants, which makes Putung has cool weather.
From here we can also see farmers work in the rice fields.
17. Mount Agung
Mount Agung is the highest mountain on the island of Bali with the height of 3.142 and the
fifth highest volcano in the whole of Indonesia. It is located in Rendang sub district. Mount
Agung has huge spiritual significance to the people of the island, and is home to the 'Mother
Temple' of Besakih. It forms part of a chain of volcanos that make up the back bone of Bali.
Mount Agung dominates the surrounding area, influencing the climate, especially rainfall
patterns. From a distance, the mountain appears to be perfectly conical. Balinese believe that
Mount Agung is a replica of Mount Meru, the central axis of the universe.
18. Jasri Beach
Jasri beach located in eastern area of Bali around 2 hours drive from the city of Denpasar.
Precisely in Jasri village, Karangasem sub district. Jasri village is a seashore village near
Candidasa beach. The main selling point of the Jasri beach is its waves. The waves here
suitable for surfing for beginners until intermediate level. Visitors will be spellbound by the
waves and also its pristine landscape of Jasri beach.
19. Yeh Malet
Yeh Malet is one of tourist destinations in Karangasem. Yeh Malet is located in Antiga
village of Manggis subdistrict. It is about 33 km from Amlapura, the capital of Karangasem.
Yeh Malet is situated on the main road of Amlapura – Denpasar. This place is often visited
by those who pass this road. In this area visitors can enjoy the beauty of Yeh Maled sea and
its surrounding. Visitors can also enjoy traditional salt making process in this area, and can
also do the swimming, fishing, and also jogging.
20. Chocolate Factory
Charly’s Chocolate Factory is a unique sightseeing spot on Jasri Beach near Candidasa, East
Bali. The chocolate factory is a privately-owned homemade chocolate production facility.
Here we can visit and tour its shady coconut groves and hobbit-like houses where most of
the products are made and displayed. The houses are built of layered bamboo and shaped
like huts with pointy roofs, and with round windows that swivel in the centre to let in fresh
air. Besides its 3 artistic bamboo houses, you can also find half a ‘pirate’s ship’ built up in
similar fashion, using layered bamboo and complete with portholes, overlooking the calm
Jasri waves. There are also 2 giant swings that hang between the coconut palms, where you
can relive some childhood fun.
21. Gumang Hill
Gumang Hill is situated in Bugbug village, on the road between Candidasa and Amlapura in
Karangasem Regency. This hill overlooks the majestic Mount Agung on the north and
Lombok strait on the east. During a favorable weather Mount Rinjani and the island of
Lombok can be seen from this hill. The peak of Gumang Hill can be reached just by 40
minutes hiking and climbing from the road on the foot of the hill. On the peak of the hill you
can find an old temple that is called Pura Bukit Gumang by the locals. This temple is
guarded by a band of monkeys. Hunting a snapshot of sunrise from the peak of this hill is
quite an adventure. The best spot for capturing the sunrise is on the east side of the peak,
right on northeast side of the temple. The beauty of the views that you can see from the peak
of Gumang is worth every ordeal you take in climbing this hill
22. Mendira Beach
Mendira Beach is located in Sengkidu, Manggis sub district. It is about 2 hours from Denpasar.
The beach is pretty and quiet. The area is not wide but it has clean white sand. There is also
temple there that will give us more sense of peace.
23. Labuhan Amuk
Labuhan Amuk located in Antiga Village, Manggis sub district. Labuhan Amuk becomes
special for its magnificent surrounding panorama. Rows of green trees and dazzling hills
make this place worth a visit.
Labuhan Amuk is also famous for several tourist activities that can be enjoyed there, like
Banana Boat and Donat Boat. Senorkeling and diving in this place will also give you an

24. Amed
Amed is located in Abang sub district, Karangasem Regency. It is about 30 minutes from
Amlapura, the capital of Karangasem and is about 2.5 hours Denpasar, the capital of Bali.

27. Temega Tree House
Temega tree house is located in Temega Village, Karangasem sub district. This new site
becomes a good alternative for tourists’ next stop in Karangasem. Temega tree house is
designed quite attractive and creative by the owner, where houses are built in several places
by utilizing the tree trunk that grows around as the area.

28. Lempuyang Hill
Lempuyang hill is situated in Abang sub district. This place is widely known for its famous

29. Pine Forest Camping Site
Pine Forest Camping Site is located in Pidpid village, Abang sub district.
Entering this place we will be welcomed by tall pine trees. Cool air and beautiful scenery
will make us feel like home want to spend more time there. This pine forest is still very
natural.
There are some “bale bengong” or buildings for relaxing available in the area for us to take a
rest after a long journey. The view of mountains, cliffs, and tall pines becomes a perfect spot

30. Tebola
Tebola is a village located in Sidemen sub district. Tebola is quite famous among nature
lovers. It offers stunning views of hills, lush rice fields, river with crystal clear water, and
also the daily lives of local people.
Tourists visiting this area usually prefer to enjoy trekking along the rice fields, cycling
around the village, and even just walking around the village to get involved with the

31. Telaga Tista
Telaga Tista is located in Jungutan Village, Bebandem sub district. This place offers

32. Chandra Bhuana Cultural Park
Chandra Bhuana Cultural Park is located in Amlapura, the capital of Karangasem. It is built

33. Silayukti Temple
Silayukti Temple is one of four oldest temples in Bali. The temple was built by Empu
Kuturan.

34. Andakasa Temple
Andakasa Temple is located in Angantelu village, Manggis sub district.

35. Taman Sari Lake
Taman Sari Lake is located in Angantelu village, Manggis sub district.
This place is actually a swamp. But the 9 hectares area that covered by waters that never
dries up looks like a lake.

reached for it is located near to the main road of Karangasem and Kelungkung. We can

37. Kusambi
Kusambi is located in Bunutan village, Abang sub district. This is one of special place in
Karangasem that offers a complete package of beautiful panorama of hills and sea.
There is a stopover built in this place. We can enjoy the panorama from the site.

local fishermen from the stopover.
38. THE WONDERFUL BESAKIH FLOWERS GARDEN
The wonderful Besakih Flowers Garden is located in Rendang sub disctrict. It is close to the
amazing Besakih Temple. This flowers garden becomes a new favorite place to visit in
Karangasem for its beautifully set marigold flower and a local flower called “Kasna”.

39. BUKIT JAMBUL
Bukit Jambul or Jambul Hill is located in Pesaban, Nongan Village, Rendang sub district. It
is approximately 8 km from Klungkung Regency, 51 km from Denpasar, and 15 km from
Besakih Temple.
Bukit Jambul is known for its harmonious combination of hills, rice fields, valley, and also
the beautiful panorama of the sea in a distance. From the hill itself, we will see the beautiful
surrounding panorama.
40. Mayura Waterfall
Mayura waterfall is situated in Rendang sub district. This waterfall becomes famous among
rafting lovers for it is precisely situated in Telaga Waja river, which is the best river for
rafting activity in Karangasem.
Visiting this area will be an unforgettable experience for nature lovers. The surrounding
view of lush rice fields and a river with its crystal clear water will make us want to spend
more times there.
We can reach this place by joining rafting activity or by walking thru the rice fields.
41. Yeh Masam
Yeh Masam (The Sour Water) is a sacred place where people can get holy water (tirta). It is
located in Bangle, Bunutan village, Abang sub district.
We can only reach the area on foot, where the location is about 800 meters from the main
road in the middle of Bangle village. Before getting to this place, we should walk through a
small but good path, going down to a dry river, and passing some rice fields with beautiful
views as the background.
People of Bangle use the water of Yeh Masam both for ceremony or ritual needs and for
their daily needs. But even though the water is a also used to provide the people’s daily
needs, Toya Masem is considered to be holy and sacred.
42. Batu Belah Beach
Batu Belah beach is situated in Datah Village, Abang sub district. This beach describes the
fact that Karangasem is truly a hidden paradise. Not many tourists recognize this beach as a
good spot for snorkeling and diving.
Batu belah beach is also a nice place to enjoy sunrise and also sunset. The blue sea seems
calling us to come and enjoy its beauty.
43. Peselatan Beach
Peselatan Beach is located in Labasari village, Abang sub district. This place is a heaven for
travelers who love water activities.
It is not only a paradise for beach lovers, for this place will also spoil our eyes with a
stunning view of hills that surround this area.
44. Dukuh Penaban
Dukuh Penaban is a village situated in Karangasem sub district. This village is developed
into tourism village for its amazing potentials. Dukuh Penaban has 6 spring waters,
thousands of old lontar (palm leaf) manuscripts that are interested to learn about, and it also
has Gandang hill that is known for its stunning panorama. From the hill we will be able to
see sunset with the stunning panorama of the blue sea in a distance.
45. Gebug Ende
Gebug Ende is an exceptional tradition from Seraya Village. Gebug means to hit. The
performer of this tradition is using 1.5 – 2 m long rattan stick to hit and also equips himself
with a rattan shield to block an attack.
Gebug Ende is performed by 2 men or boys. They will fight by using the equipment.
The objective of this tradition is not only to show the braveness and the skill of the players,
but there is a sacred value that is believed by the community.
Gebug Ende is usually performed during dry season. It is held to ask for the rain. It is
believed that Gebug Seraya is a holly sacrifice. Blood dripping from the players will make
the rain falls sooner.
46. Toya Sah
Toya Sah is located in Muncan village, Selat sub district. This is spring water that is
developed into a purification place. This place is famous among local people who come to
cleanse themselves with its water that is considered holy.
Not only people from Karangasem, people from all over Bali come to this place for healing
purpose.
This place not only give you a spiritual experience, the stunning view along the way to reach
the area and around the area will spoil our eyes.
47. Usaba Guling/ Aci Sumbu
This ritual is performed once a year in Timbrah Village, precisely on the first New moon
based on Balinese calendar. The ritual is taking place in 2 Temples, which are Panti Kaler
Temple and Bale Agung Temple. This ritual becomes unique because is is using a media
called Sumbu, and married people of the village will give suckling pig (guling) as their
offerings.
48. Buitan Beach
Buitan Beach is a tranquil place within the regency of Karangasem. Close to Candidasa and
the perfect base to explore the unspoilt East Bali. Set amidst a coconut grove, the resort
nestles between the sea and the majestic Mount Agung, Bali’s most sacred mountain. This

49. Ulakan Beach

This beach is hiding near Labuhan Amuk.

50. Guungan Hill
Guungan Hill is located in Candidasa, Manggis sub district. The access to this place is not
good enough and a bit rocky. We can just park our vehicles and get into the hill by walking
approximately for 15 minutes. From the hill we will be able to witness the stunning ocean
view in a distance.

51. Tanah Ampo
Tanah Ampo is located in Manggis sub district. This place is growing into tourist destination

52. Embung Seraya
Embung Seraya (Embung = retention basin) is located in Seraya village, Karangasem sub
district. This is basically a reservoir that is managed into a new interesting spot to visit in
Karangasem.
Embung Seraya becomes a new alternative for travelers who wish for a different kind of
relaxing area. It also has many wonderful spots for taking selfies.
Visiting this place, we will see the beauty of surrounding nature of a blue sea in a distance.
53. Grojog Sambeh Yeh Poh Waterfall
Grojog Sambeh Yeh Poh Waterfall is located in Yeh Poh village, Manggis sub district. Even
though we have to reach the area on foot, it is worth the effort. The 600 meters walk offers
us a stunning view of hills and rice fields.
This waterfall is not only visited for a picnic purpose. Many people also come to cleanse
themselves with its water.
54. Batu Engsel Waterfall
Batu Engsel Waterfall is located in Gegelang village, Manggis sub district. This waterfall
should be reached on foot. However, it will give us an unforgettable trekking experience, as
along the trek we will see green rice fields, hills and also fruits garden. The stunning view
around the waterfall makes this area worth a visit.
55. Tibumati Waterfall
Tibumati waterfall is situated in Siig village, Manggis sub district. This place is another
hidden wonderful spot in Karangasem. However, it is quite familiar among youngsters who
love to travel and finding new places to visit.
Tibumati waterfall becomes special because the waterfall is not so high, and the water
falling down is like stored in a naturally formed cistern.
Visiting this place will give us an adventure experience, for it is located in the middle of
forest and surrounded by rocks.
56. Yeh Labuh and Tibu Kresek Waterfalls
Yeh Labuh and Tibu Kresek Waterfalls is located in Selumbung village, Manggis sub
district. The two waterfalls are situated close one another. The area is hidden. It is far from
the village. We have to walk to get there, and the way is quite adventurous.
Visiting the area we will first find Tibu Kresek waterfall. The waterfall is not too high.
To get to Yeh Labuh waterfall we have to do another tricky walk. However, a small hiking
to get to Yeh Labuh waterfall is worth for we will be spoiled with a stunning view around
the area.
57. Jagra Satru Waterfall
Jagra Satru Waterfall is located in Pateh Village, Selat sub district. It is situated in the
middle of Pateh forest. The villagers believe that since long ago people have been visiting
Jagra Satru waterfall for meditating. The water of the waterfall is also believed to be able to
heal many kinds of disease.
This waterfall is quite adventurous to reach. However, the surrounding panorama and the
vibration of peace make this place worth to visit.
OLD VILLAGES
1. TENGANAN PEGRINGSINGAN
Tenganan Pegeringsingan is located in Manggis subdistrict. It is approximately 65 km from
Denpasar, near to Candidasa, and can be easily reached by public or private transportation.
Tenganan is one of some old villages in Bali, which are usually called as “Bali Aga”.
In this village we will be able to witness the “original” Balinese life, where the villagers are
holding close the culture and the village regulation.
2. Timbrah Village
Timbrah Village was known as Timah Sari. It is believed that Timbrah Village has existed
since the saka year of 1118.
When Mount Agung erupted in 1963, this area was severely attacked by hot lava and cold
lava. From this event the name of the village was changed into Fatimah Village which
derived from the words Fati and Embah or death caused by lava flood from the great
mountain eruption.
The villagers agreed to leave or move the location of the village to the east. The name of the
village was also changed into Timbra Embah. The name was taken from the words Timbra
and Embah. Timbra means lava and embah means flood. This time the Village is widely
known as Timbrah.
3. Bungaya Village
The name Bungaya was taken from the words Bung and Aya. Bung / Bong / Wong means
people and Aya means big. Bungaya originally is called Nyuh Aya / Nyah Aya then became
Bungaya / Bongaya which means descendant of big people.
Another story says that Bungaya came from the word Bungahya / Bunga Aya which
symbolizes the people’s hospitality, and the beauty of Bungaya’s girls (daha) that are
famous with their rejang dance.
Bungaya is call an old village for the people are still holding close the custom until this very
moment. The existence of historical instruments called Selonding or can be called palinggih

Bungaya is one of old villages in Bali.
4. Seraya village
Seraya Village is believed to be the oldest village in Bali. This is supported by several facts.
First is language. Seraya Village has a specific native language that is different from other
languages and has been used from generation to generation besides Balinese language. The
language is only used among the natives of Seraya. The second is its dance. Gebug dance is
one of traditional dances in Seraya. This dance is used to ask for rain during the dry season.
The third is Singing. Seraya village has sacred singing that was performed at a certain
ceremony or at funerals. The fourth is the spread of Seraya villagers throughout Indonesia.
5. Bugbug Village
Bugbug village is an old village that was started from a river called Buhu and the burying of
a pond called Telaga Ngembeng.
The story of Bugbug village is close to an important figure named Ida Gede (Bhatara Gde
Gumang) who could create Buhu river. He also buried a big pond called Telaga Ngembeg to
build a village which was then called Bugbug village.
The word bugbug means united, because the village was the unity of several villages.
6. Asak Village
The history of Asak Village is started when Ranisatru was pointed to be the leader in caka
year of 1552, that was when Bali was reigned by Dalem Segening. The story was then
continued by the arrival of Kyai Manginte in caka year of 1558. The both were then pointed
to become the leaders of Asak.
The word Asak means determination. It is also believed that the word Asak was taken from
the name of a great figure named I Gusti Made Asak atau Pangeran Asak (The prince of
Asak).
