ALL PHOBIAS CAN BE CURED – ESSAY

While a fear is a natural emotion that protects people from harm when they face real and imminent
danger, a phobia is an excessive or unreasonable fear of an object, place, situation, feeling or animal. In
addition to this, phobias cause significant dysfunction or discomfort due to avoidance behavior and the
anxiety reaction that occurs when exposed to the phobic object or situation Research suggests that
phobias can run in families, and that both genetic and environmental factors (nature and nurture) can
contribute to developing a phobia.

Many people with a phobia do not need a treatment, and avoiding the object of their fear is enough to
control the problem. Simple phobias are fears of specific things such as insects, infections, flying. about a
situation or object. If a phobia becomes very severe, a person may organise their life around avoiding the
thing that’s causing them anxiety. As well as restricting their day-to-day life, it can also cause a lot of
distress.

Phobias are typically treated with therapy, medication, or a combination of both. For instance, exposure
therapy focuses on changing your response to the object or situation that you fear. Gradual, repeated
exposure to the source of your specific phobia and the related thoughts, feelings and sensations may help
you learn to manage your anxiety. Another example of treatments is the Cognitive behavioral therapy
(CBT) involves exposure combined with other techniques to learn ways to view and cope with the feared
object or situation differently. In addition to this, the medicaments used are sedatives and beta blockers.

Ask your doctor or other health care professional to suggest lifestyle and other to help you manage
strategies the anxiety that accompanies specific phobias. For example: Mindfulness strategies may be
helpful in learning how to tolerate anxiety and reduce avoidance behaviors. Relaxation techniques, such as
deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation or yoga, may help cope with anxiety and stress. Physical
activity and exercise may be helpful in managing anxiety associated with specific phobias.
In conclusion, most phobias can be cured with appropriate treatment. There is no single treatment that
works for every person with a phobia. Treatment needs to be tailored to the individual for it to work. The
doctor, psychiatrist, or psychologist may recommend behavioral therapy, medications, or a combination of
both.
