Create Alignment from Objects

- Practice creating alignment from objects using the Alignments_Imperial or Alignments_Metric included in
this exercise.
 Create 2-alignments from the geometry included in the sample dataset. Use the Alignment
Properties and Default Radius as shown below.

 Solve the PI location on the alignment with 2 curves. NOTE: Solving the PI will display the
tangent extensions for both curves on the alignment.

Edit Alignment Data

 Practice editing the alignment data on the following alignments.
 Rename the alignments to assign intuitive and meaningful names.
· 2-Curve Alignment
§ Alignment Name: Elmwood Drive
· 1-Curve Alignment
§ Alignment Name: Elmwood Court
 Change the Stationing on the Alignments as follows:
· Elmwood Court
§ Station at Alignment Start: 1+00 ft / 0+30 m
· Elmwood Drive
§ Station at Intersection of Elmwood Court: 5+00 ft / 0+150 m
 Practice Reversing alignment direction.
· Reverse the alignment direction on Elmwood Court.
· Reverse the alignment direction again so the stationing starts at the intersection of
Elmwood Drive.
 Practice Masking alignment.
· Add a mask to Elmwood court to hide the geometry and labels at the start of the curve
through the end of the alignment.
· Turn off the mask to return the alignment to full display.

Edit Alignment Geometry

 Practice editing the alignment geometry to get familiar with some of the common alignment editing tools
 Precisely locate the EOP of Elmwood Court to the following rounded coordinate.
· Northing: 3636794.1600 ft / 1108497.0780 m
· Easting: 5644860.6500 ft / 1720556.9700 m
 Delete the PI on Elmwood Court.
 Insert a new PI onto Elmwood Court using the coordinates provided.
· Northing: 3636499.9806 ft / 1108407.4109 m
· Easting: 5644869.4792 ft / 1720559.6584 m
 Add a new curve to Elmwood Court
· Radius: 150 ft / 46 m
 Edit the Curve 2 Radius on Elmwood drive to match the Curve 1 Radius. (200 ft / 61 m)

Create Alignment using Alignment Layout Tools

 Practice creating an alignment using the Alignment Layout tools.
 Use the sample
drawing AlignmentsDesignCriteria_Imperial or AlignmentsDesignCriteria_Metric
 Use the Alignment PI report below to create a new CENTERLINE alignment

Apply Design Criteria

 Practice Applying Design Criteria to the centerline alignment created in the previous step. After assigning
the design criteria to the alignment, add curves to the alignment using the minimum design radius.
 Assign a Design Criteria File to the alignment using the details from the table below.
 Resolve Warnings on the curve segments using the Minimum Radius that was determined from
the Design Criteria.
Calculate Superelevation
 Practice calculating the superelevation for an alignment. Use the sample drawing from that you recently
added the Design Criteria to.
 After calculating the superelevation, add a Super Elevation view in the drawing and label the
superelevation critical points on the alignment.
 Calculate Superelevation using the following parameters:
· Roadway Type: Undivided Crowned
§ Pivot Method: Center Baseline
· Lanes: Symmetric Roadway
§ Number of Lanes right: 1
§ Normal Lane Width: 12 ft / 3.6 m
§ Normal Lane Slope: -2%
· Shoulder Control: Toggle ON Calculate
§ Normal Shoulder Width: 4 ft / 1.5 m
§ Normal Shoulder Slope: -4%
§ Low side: Breakover Removal
§ High side: Match Lane Slope
· Attainment: Use Default
 Create a Superelevation in your sample drawing.
 Label all Superelevation Critical Points on the alignment.

Label Alignments
 Practice labeling alignments using label sets, station and offset labels, and segments. Use the sample
drawing AlignmentsDesignCriteria_Imperial or AlignmentsDesignCriteria_Metric.
 Remove all of the Alignment labels from the alignment.
 Using Label Sets, import the Major Minor and Geometry Points label set.
 Edit the Station Increment for Major and Minor Labels.
· Major Stations: 1000 ft / 300 m
· Minor Station Ticks: 100 ft / 30 m
 Add a Station Offset (fixed) label and a Station Offset label along the alignment. Explore how
each label type behaves when the alignment is edited.
 Add Line and Curve labels to the alignment. Use the following styles:
· Lines: Bearing and Distance
· Curves: Distance – Radius and Delta
 Create an Alignment Segment table for all line and curve segments.
