1. GENERAL

This Service Manual has been prepared for BME maintenance service of the TERUFUSION Infusion
Pump (TE-171/172).
When informed of a pump unit malfunction from a doctor/nurse, please troubleshoot
according to the following procedures.
(1) Ensure that a thorough reading of both the Instruction and Service Manuals are
carried out before carrying out any repair or maintenance work.
(2) Ensure to verify with the user if operation of the equipment has been carried out
in accordance with the instruction manual.
(3) If any fault is found to be caused by improper operation by the doctor/nurse,
correct the cause of the problem and instruct the user how to operate the
equipment properly so that recurrence of the fault can be prevented.
(4) Before starting of actual repair of the equipment , be sure to confirm the fault that
the doctor/nurse has brought to your attention . After assessing the actual state of
the fault, only then should you start any repair work.
(5) If the equipment is found malfunction even when it is operated properly, use the
troubleshooting procedure in this manual to diagnose the faulty pump.
(6) If you are unable to correct the fault by using this manual, please contact your
local TERUMO distributor or TERUMO for corrective action and repair.
(7) Disinfect the items contaminated by patient’s body fluids before returning to
TERUMO distributor or TERUMO. Please include all items that have been
removed from the equipment during preliminary checks upon return of equipment.
If it is necessary to send back those items that have not been disinfected, seal
them completely and attach a memorandum indicating that the contents
unsanitary and to be handled with care.

(General precautions)
(1) Do not detach connectors or printed-circuit boards while the equipment is
supplied with power.
(2) Visually check the equipment under maintenance/repair for any open circuits,
short circuits, loose connectors and damaged parts. Also, ensure that checks for
abnormal sounds or foul smell(caused by burned components) are carried out.
(3) After completion of repair work, check that all switches are set in the respective
original settings. Clean the equipment and its periphery and, then, report the
result of repair work to the BME manager.
(4) When handling semiconductors, especially MOS-ICs, take special care not to cause
electrostatic breakage, etc.
Keep your body and soldering iron in constant connection with a ground point
through a 1M resistor. ( A statically insulted type of soldering iron does not
required grounding, but it must be used only after being checked for
completeness of insulation.)
When carrying ICs and printed-circuit boards, be sure to keep them in electrically
conductive containers or wrap them in metal sheets(such as aluminum foil).

(5) When an abnormality on longer exists when a printed-circuit board (CPU) has
been replaced, try re-mounting the original board to verify that the previous
abnormality still recurs. If there is not recurrence, poor contact or another fault
could exist, continue to further troubleshoot.

in OFF until power ON/OFF becomes possible. After the power is turned on once, in rare
cases, Err1, Err6, or Err7 may occur during self-diagnosis. If this is the case, disconnect
CN8, CN11, the Ni-Cd battery, and the AC and DC powers to shut off all power. Then,
reconnect all the connectors and turn the power back on. If it starts up successfully,
there is no problem.
When main board [5] or pump body unit [2] is replaced with new one, create the
correction values in the main board in the self-diagnosis mode, after assembly, by using
those values stated on pump body unit [2].

7.3.1 Adjusting the occlusion sensor

Inspect and adjust the occlusion sensor in the following procedure:

7.3.1.1 Adjusting the occlusion sensor (downstream side)

* Resetting the occlusion detection pressure cannot be made in the self-diagnosis mode. Select [M].
Set the self-diagnosis mode (DIPSW-7P: ON), turn on the power switch, and set the flow rate to [120]
mL/h.
* Delivery limit is automatically set to [----] (delivery limit free).
Press [RATE/LIMIT] button two times repeatedly to indicate [2000] on the volume delivered display.
With the door left open, adjust the VR1 on the occlusion sensor unit (lower) to set the A/D indication to
[155]. (This value is only for purpose of making a standard.)

Push the downstream occlusion plunger three times repeatedly with a jig (3.1 mm/4.1 mm) and calculate a
mean value of three measurements.
3.1 mm jig: AVG1 (a mean value of 3 measurements)
4.1 mm jig: AVG2 (a mean value of 3 measurements)
In this case, make sure that [51] (AVG1 - AVG2) [57].
When the value exceeds [57], turn VR1 clockwise to correct the excess of reading.

*When it is not possible to get the value after the

repeated trials, occlusion sensor cover and / or
occlusion sensor unit (lower) should be replace.

Set the pressure gauge on the pump body and push [START] button.(Refer to 9-6)

Make sure that a value of detection falls in the range of 30 90 kPa (0.30 0.90 kgf/cm2).
Also, check that a variation is [90] or more when the plunger is pushed to the extreme end of
its stroke.
In case of a failure of entering the detection range, repeat adjustment, beginning at step .
Also, check for smoothness of plunger movement.
After adjustment, return to the ordinary mode and check for L, M and H occlusion detection
pressures. Readings must fall in the ranges below:
L 13.3 60kPa(0.1 0.6 f/ 2)
M 30 90kPa(0.3 0.9 f/ 2)
H 60 133.3kPa(0.6 1.4 f/ 2)

7.3.1.2 Adjusting the occlusion sensor (upstream)

Press [RATE/LIMIT] button three times repeatedly to indicate [2001] on the volume delivered
display.
With the door left open, adjust the VR1 on the occlusion sensor unit (upper) to set the A/D
indication to [60 1].

Push the upstream occlusion plunger with the 3.1 mm jig and make sure that value of A/D is [70] or
larger. If [70] is not reached, replace the occlusion sensor unit (upstream) with new one.

Set the occlusion pressure test jig on the upstream side of the pump and push [START] button.
Make sure an occlusion alarm occurs in the range of -30 -80 kPa (-0.30 -0.80 kgf/cm2).
(Refer to 9-7)

Note: For adjustment of the occlusion sensor (upstream), there is no necessity of

selecting [M].

7.3.2 Adjusting the air-in-line sensor

Adjust the Air-In-Line sensor according to the flow-chart on the next page.
Press [RATE/LIMIT] button four times repeatedly to indicate [3000] or [3001] on the volume
delivered display.
[3000]: A/D value of Air-In-Line sensor (lower) is indicated.
[3001]: A/D value of Air-In-Line sensor (upper) is indicated.
Initially set the VR1, VR2, VR3 at the center position (12 o'clock position). Turning a volume
counterclockwise causes A/D value to increase. Turning clockwise causes to decrease. Adjusting VR2
causes A/D values to vary for both [3000] and [3001]. Adjusting VR3 and VR1 causes A/D value to vary for
[3000] and [3001], respectively.
Note: VR1 and VR3 are mainly used to decrease the A/D value.

8.3 Alarms and Error Messages

When any error conditions occurs such as those listed below, take the necessary action/s as stated in
the Instruction Manual, External Communication Protocol, and Section 8 Troubleshooting.

8.3.1 Alarms

Alarm State Description

Completion An alarm is activated when the total volume infused has reached the
intended delivery limit. The alarm is de-activated when the total volume
delivered is < delivery limit.
Air-In-Line An alarm is activated when an air bubble ( approx. 5 mm in length for
TERUFUSION Infusion Pump ) is detected.
Occlusion An alarm is activated when an inner tube pressure, increase (down stream)
or decrease (upstream) , is detected during infusion in either [START ] or
[PURGE] operation.
Door Open An alarm is activated when the opening of the door is detected.

Low battery When the internal Ni-Cad battery charge falls below 20% available
operational time, the [BATTERY] indicator lamp blinks with a buzzer alarm
indication. An intermittent beep will sound first followed by a continuous
beep sound as time elapses. The [ Operation Indicator ] does not show any
change.
Flow error An alarm is activated when an inconsistent flow-rate is detected (free-flow,
(when the DRIP empty drip chamber or flow error).
Sensor is used) when the pump is in [STOP] operation and a continuous flow of
solution drops are detected. This is regarded as [Free Flow] condition.
When the pump is in [START] operation and no flow of solution drops
are detected.
When the pump is in [START] operation and a continuous flow
of solution drops are detected to be out-of-time with the specified
drop selection. This is regarded as [Flow Error] condition.
