4. OPERATIONS

WARNING: DO NOT TOUCH THE VES-CL ELEVATOR, UNLESS HYDRAULIC POWER IS DISCONNECTED.

WARNING: NEVER OPEN THE ELEVATOR WHEN THE PIPE LOAD IS STILL SUSPENDED BY THE ELEVATOR.

WARNING: OBSERVE THE ELEVATOR CONTINUOUSLY WHILE CLOSING TO CHECK IF THE ELEVATOR IS PROPERLY CLOSED. THE
CL-150 ELEVATOR PN 611900-Y-H-T IS WITHOUT CLOSING SIGNAL, THEREFORE EXTRA CAUTION NEEDS TO BE TAKEN TO
ENSURE THAT THE ELEVATOR IS PROPERLY CLOSED BEFORE PICKING UP ANY LOAD.

Safety
• Make sure that ALL hydraulic lines are isolated (disconnected) before any work is carried out on
the VES-CL Elevator.
• It is recommended to have the VES-CL Elevator operated by the driller.
• The VES-CL Elevator is activated with a remote control valve, which may be actuated by hand or
foot depending on the type of valve and/or HMI-interface.
• The driller (and or the floor man) must coordinate operation of the elevator and slips/spider so
one tool is engaged around the tubular before the other is disengaged. Thus, one or both tools
continuously suspend the tubular during all stages of pipe handling operations.

Operation Running in / Tripping

1. The CL-150 elevator is lowered around the tooljoint and the command “close elevator” is given.
2. A signal is given to the driller when the CL-150 elevator is closed.
NOTE: Only for elevator model 611900-Y-H-TF with closing signal).
3. The pipe is made up.
4. The driller lifts the CL-150-elevator in order to pick up the load.
5. The slips/spider is commanded to “open”, simultaneously, the driller picks up the elevator while
OPERATIONS

the driller raises the spider/slips.

6. The driller lowers the string into the hole.
7. The driller sets the spider/slips.
8. Open the CL-150 Elevator and pick up a new section of pipe.

Operation Running out / Tripping

1. The CL-150 elevator is lowered around the tooljoint and the command “close elevator” is given.
2. Observe the CL-150 Elevator is closed when the “elevator closed indication signal” is visible.
NOTE: Only for elevator model 611900-Y-H-TF with closing signal.
3. Raise the spider/slips.
4. Pull out the string.
5. Close the spider/slips
6. Release the stringweight from the CL-150 Elevator by lowering it slightly
7. Now running out the stand or joint.
8. When the pipe is running out, pick up the stand and set it back.
9. Open the CL-150 Elevator and guide pipe out.
10. Lower CL-150 Elevator and pick up the string at rigfloor.

29
5. MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION

General
WARNING: FOR SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE
ACTIVITIES, MAKE SURE THAT NO HYDRAULIC
PRESSURE EXISTS ON THE ELEVATOR AND THAT THE
CONNECTING LINES ARE DISCONNECTED.

Lubrication
The elevator needs to be lubricated
regularly on the following points. Use a
grease gun:

Grease points:
1. On top and bottom of the latch pin
(2 nipples each).
Grease point 1 on the elevator
2. Lubricate springs daily.
3. Check and lubricate latch opening
arrangement daily.
4. Hinge pin (1 nipple).

Daily Inspection
The Function of the Feedbacksignal has to
be checked daily.

Locking of screws
All screws are normally secured by
mechanical bolt lock or with a lock wire.

Grease quality
Grease point 2+3 on the elevator
In order to achieve efficient greasing even

30
Bushing Wear Check
Wear of Equipment
Normal wear of bushings and elevator ears caused by usage will eventually reduce
1. the load capacity of elevators.
The existence of cracks or the appearance of defects can indicate severe
deterioration and even failures. Prompt attention is required either to remove the
elevator from service immediately or to undertake appropriate repair.
A wear condition in its early stages is common. Frequently, it results in a tool joint
sticking to the elevator.
Elevators showing hammer marks around the top of the bore should be closely
examined to determine whether it is the elevator, the tool joint or both are faulty.
To indentify the conditions of the 18° Elevator taper gauges are available for all
B+V Elevators (P/N 600018).
A set of gauges consists of an 18° gauge (GOOD) and a 15° gauge (BAD).

How to check the bushing the correct way

1. Fit the gauge to the inner bore of the bushing.
2. Push the gauge against the bushing and start to move the gauge downwards
until the chamfer touched the 18° shoulder.
3. Check the result as follows:

1. Check of results
1. Using the GOOD gauge: If the gauge sits directly on the bushing without
showing any clearance between gauge and bushing, the bushing is OK.
2. If the gauge shows space between the gauge and the bushing, you have to
check with the second gauge.
3. Using the BAD 15° gauge: If the gauge shows any clearance between gauge
and bushing, the bushing is OK.
4. If the gauge sits directly on the bushing without showing any space between
gauge and bushing, take the elevator out of service.
2.
WARNING: IF THE TAPER IS LESS THAN 15° TAKE THE ELEVATOR OUT OF SERVICE OR EXCHANGE THE

MAINTENANCE

BUSHING.
IF THE TAPER IS BETWEEN 18° AND 15°, REDUCE THE ELEVATORS LOAD CAPACITY TO 90%. NEVER USE

Maintaining the Closing Signal Valve
(Elevator model 611900-Y-H-TF only)

Inspection and Maintenance

An inspection is recommended at least on a daily basis (Cat II). Depending on
operational factors (operating time, load cycles, environment etc.) inspection
frequency can be increased.
1. Ensure the elevator is pressureless and the hydraulic lines are isolated.
2. Prior to inspection, all foreign material such as dirt, paint, grease, oil, scale
etc. shall be removed from the valve by a suitable method.
3. The equipment shall be inspected by a qualified person.
4. Check for visible damage at the valve, its single parts and fixations screws.
5. Check for loose items.
6. Check the fixation screws which keeps the valve in the correct position. The
screws need to be thight and the securing elements (wire, lock washers, tab
washers etc) need to be free of damage.
7. Check if the red actuation roller at the valve can be moved easily by hand up
and down.
8. Connect the elevator hydrauliccally. Check the open / close function of the
elevator.
9. Before the elevator is placed into storage, the valve must be cleaned and
inspected.
10. If any malfunction occurs or any parts were found showing cracks, excessive
wear, loose or damaged items the elevator shall be removed from service for
further examination.

Location of Valve
The hydraulic valve (p/n 775088) is located at the Latch Lock in front of the
elevator. The exact position varies slightly depending on the elevator type (see
pictures for example).

Function of Valve
When the elevator is fully closed and latched, the valve is actuated. Therefore

& INSPECTION

hydraulic pressure passes through and pressurizes line “C” (Elevator closed
signal). The signal indicates the operator that the elevator is properly closed and
latched.

Adjustment procedure Feedback
Valve (Closing Signal)
In case the elevator does not give a
proper closing signal, the feedback
24 22 21
valve may be in need of readjustment.
To check if this is the case, close the
elevator. When the elevator is fully
closed, move down the valve roller
manually. If a closing signal occurs, the
valve has to be readjusted. If no closing
signal occurs, it is possible the valve
is damaged or defect and has to be
replaced.

Procedure to readjust the valve :

• unscrew the screws at position 27

and disassemble the protection
cover position 26.
• loosen the screws at position 20
slightly.
• move the valve slightly upward by
turning the adjustment screw at
position 22.

WARNING: BE CAREFULL MOVING THE VALVE

UPWARD, ONLY A SMALL DISTANCE MAY BE
NECESSARY. IF THE VALVE IS PLACED TOO HIGH, IT
20 19 34
CAN BE CRUSHED WHEN CLOSING THE ELEVATOR.

• tighten the screws at position 20

• check the closing signal by closing
the elevator.
• if there is still no signal, move the

valve a bit higher and check again,
repeat till the closing signal works.

After successful adjustment, make sure

all screws are tightened and all safety
elements are in place.
