OVERVIEW
Purpose
This document outlines the minimum technical coating requirements necessary to protect field
joints from external corrosion after welding line pipes in the field. The field joint coating shall match
the factory-applied coating on the line pipe. The application of the coating should ensure that the field
joint receives the same or better protection against external corrosion as the factory-applied external
coating on the main body of the 8-inch DSS flowline for Gas Cap Blowdown Project.
Scope
This specification oversees all requirements for the external field joint (surfaces left bare after field
welding including fittings) coating of the approximately 2.2km 8 inches DSS flowline of the Gbaran
Gas Cap Blowdown Project – Phase 2. The external field joint coating shall be suitable for the
specified operating and environmental conditions.
The content of this specification originates from ISO 21809-3, 2016. Thus, this specification shall be
considered alongside ISO 21809-3, 2016 and not as a standalone document.
PIPELINE ISOLATING JOINTS
General
All isolating joints shall be of monolithic type fabricated by welding and with pup pieces on either side.
The isolating joint(s) shall be designed following the methodology described in ASME BPVC, Section
VIII, Division 1 Appendix 2/Division 2 Appendix 3 using the design pressure, design temperature
and design factor of the flowline and the anticipated external loads acting on the isolating joint.
The monolithic isolating joint should be installed above ground or in an inspection pit in dry
conditions. The isolating joint shall be suitable for pigging operations and the internal diameter of
isolating joint(s) shall not be less than the internal diameter of the pipe to which it is to be welded.
Isolating joint shall be with free – issued pup pieces that matches the line pipe material.
The isolating joint shall have the following structure (see Figure 1):
Two spools each consisting of a line pipe section with a bevelled end for direct welding to the
pipeline. The line pipe sections shall be identical to the pipeline material. A length of 150 mm
at each end shall be left uncoated to allow welding and shall be protected from contact with
soil or other materials that can cause corrosion.
A retaining casing for strength connection of two spools.
Forged steel pieces, welded to the other end of each spool, of a material compatible to the
pipeline material.
Insulating and filler materials for electrical isolation between the two associated spools.
A double set of ring seals for pipeline internal pressure containment.
Two sets of cable connection lugs equidistant from the end of the pipe section and the joint,
externally welded on double plates to each spool and suitably drilled for M10 bolted cable
connection. One set of lug is intended for electrical measurement, the other is intended for a
surge diverter installation.
The minimum isolation length shall be 4 m in length regardless of the diameter.
