1. 5 Exemplary Practices of Leadership
Attributes of a Leader
Think about someone in your life that you consider to be a leader
What makes this person a leader?
How does this person make you feel when you are involved with this person?
What leadership attributes does this person exhibit?
Take a few moments to write down your ideas
Be prepared to share them with your small table group
Sharing Leadership Attributes
Take turns reading your responses to one another
See if any of these are also on your brainstorming sheet from earlier - 'Leadership
Attributes/Characteristics'
If others in class have the same attributes, add a star * to the ones typed in already
by others
Discussion on Chosen Leader
How did you decide on your leader to write about?
What did you notice about the different attributes each of you shared?
Are there other traits that come to mind following discussions (ones that weren’t
mentioned)?
Personal Reflection
Which of these attributes do you possess?
Can you give an example that shows this in your life?
What attributes would you like to develop as a leader? Why?
What relationship do these attributes have to your experiences as a student leader?
Leadership is Learned
Leadership is learned, and everyone has the potential to be a leader
Exemplary Practices of Leadership
Not all leaders are the same, but exemplary leaders regularly engage in 5 common
practices
Practice 1: MODEL the way
Find your voice by clarifying your personal values
Set the example by aligning actions with shared values
Practice 2: INSPIRE A SHARED VISION
Envision the future by imagining exciting and ennobling possibilities
Enlist others in a common vision by appealing to shared aspirations
Practice 3: CHALLENGE THE PROCESS
Search for opportunities by seeking innovative ways to change, grow and improve
Experiment and take risks by constantly generating small wins and learning from
mistakes
Practice 4: ENABLE OTHERS TO ACT
Foster collaboration by promoting cooperative goals and building trust
Strengthen others by sharing power and discretion
Practice 5: ENCOURAGE THE HEART
Recognize contributions by showing appreciation for individual excellence
Celebrate the values and victories by creating a spirit of community
Importance of Personal Best as a Leader
Write about a time when you were at your very best as a leader
Consider the experience itself, when it occurred, who was involved and what
challenges you faced
Read over your description and list the most important actions or behaviours you
took as a leader in that situation
Share your findings with your group
What behaviours did you recognize in yourself that you already possess?
What behaviours do you think you could improve/build on?
What did you learn from your peers’ best experiences?
Why do you think it’s important to think about your personal best as a leader?
Leadership is Everyone’s Business
Leadership is everyone’s business and it affects all of us
It’s not about position or rank, but it is about a process that anyone can understand
and learn
Just like any other skill or behaviour, it can be strengthened through commitment
and practice as long as we are interested in improving ourselves and developing
our own leadership potential
