You work for The Women’s Foundation, which promotes the full and equal participation of women
and girls in all aspects of Hong Kong society. Part of your job is to give advice to women and girls
who think they are being discriminated at work or school. Recently, you have received this complaint
letter:

I am a 16-year-old girl who wants to start a girls’ rugby team at school. However, the head PE
teacher, a man, has denied my request three times, saying that rugby is only for boys as girls are not
quick or strong enough. However, I can do 50 push ups easy and have always outrun boys my age. I
am incredibly frustrated. What should I do?

Learning English through Popular Culture

As part of an English and PE cross-curricular project, you have been doing
research on sports and society. You have noticed that in Hong Kong, foreign
sports events (e.g. the English Premier League and the NBA) and
sportspeople get a lot more media coverage than their local counterparts.
You feel that this is hampering the growth of our sports industry.

 Write an essay for your English and PE teachers.

 Explain what discourages local media from covering local sports and
suggest how the media may help raise the profile of Hong Kong’s sports events and/or sportspeople.

Learning English through Social Issues

You are a huge fan of e-sports. With e-sports gaining more recognition and popularity worldwide, you
believe e-sports should be included in traditional, reputable sporting competitions.

Learning English through Workplace Communication

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) recently conducted a study on age discrimination in the
workplace. Most employers expressed, “Young people are not patient enough to learn, and thus training
them will be a waste of the company’s resources”. You are Chris Wong, a graduate from a local
university. Write an article for a local newspaper discussing the matter of age discrimination in the
workplace. In your article, you should:

· Discuss how age discrimination could affect young adults.

· Suggest ways to foster an anti-discrimination workplace environment.
· Include a title for your article.

Learning English through Sports Communication

There are many underprivileged elderly people in Hong Kong who live alone and spend a lot of time
without interacting or communicating with others, not to mention doing sports. You are Chris Wong, a
volunteer for a local NGO. You helped organise a Seniors’ Sports Day to raise awareness of the
importance of physical exercise among the elderly. 250 attendees were engaged in sports, games, mass
dance and chair yoga during the Seniors’ Sports Day event. You are thankful that the event was such a
success. You are going to write a blog about the event. In the blog, you should:

· Describe the event.

· Describe your feelings and the reactions of the seniors and the volunteers.
· Include a title for your blog entry.

In many parts of the world, children with
disabilities or other special needs are entitled
and encouraged to attend regular schools instead
of ‘special’ schools. This is known as ‘inclusive
education’.

Write an essay providing at least three arguments for

Learning English through Poems and Songs

You are a singer in Hong Kong. Famine has currently struck
Africa and people there are facing a food crisis. You want to
record and release a charity cover of a meaningful song to raise
funds for the poor in Africa.

You hope more singers could collaborate with you and record the
song together. To encourage other singers to join your
movement, you are going to post a video on your Instagram
account. Write your speech.

Learning English through Short Stories

The big day has arrived for the audition of the musical. You have practiced for months. Write a short
story based on the events leading up to the audition ending with the line:

‘I had practiced saying it a hundred times, but when the moment came, I just couldn’t open my
mouth!’

Learning English through Drama

The principal of your school, Mr Chan, has asked you, Chairperson of the Drama Club, to hold a week-
long series of events to promote drama but more importantly promote the sense of belonging to the
school.

Write your letter to the principal identifying the following:
