2 Describing satisfaction/dissatisfaction

Match the two halves to form sentences.

1. It wasn’t as fast/efficient/expensive/cheap a. as I thought it would be.

For each sentence, think of a product you have bought.

3 Less common synonyms

To get Band 7 or higher in IELTS Speaking, it helps to use a few less common synonyms of common
words. This shows the examiner that you have a wide vocabulary. Match the synonyms on the left
to the common adjectives on the right.

1. handy a. cheap

2. defective b. expensive

3. impractical c. faulty

4. pricey d. old-fashioned

5. inexpensive e. useful

6. state-of-the-art f. useless

7. outdated g. very modern

Work in pairs. Choose a product that you bought from Exercise 1 and describe it using one or two of
the synonyms from this exercise. Your partner must try to guess the product. Try to use qualifiers (a
bit, pretty, rather, very, extremely, etc.) to make your speaking sound more natural. Example:

"It’s an electronic gadget. It was pretty pricey when I bought it. Now it’s rather inexpensive."

4 Practice (Part 2)

Work in pairs. Take turns to answer the cue cards below. Try to use some vocabulary from this lesson.
Remember, you have 1 minute to take notes and 1-2 minutes for talking.

And say what you did with the product in the end.

5 Discussion (Part 3)

Discuss any of the questions below.

1. Why do you think that some people prefer to buy products on the internet?
2. Why doesn’t everyone use the internet for shopping?
3. Why do you think some people prefer to buy products from their own countries rather than
imported items?
4. How does advertising influence what people buy?
5. Do advertisements give correct information, or do they encourage people to buy things that they
may not need?
