BASIC AUTHORWARE DESIGNS

Objectives:
At the end of the session, students should be able to:

 Develop proficiency in creating basic Authorware designs by mastering

fundamental concepts, tools, and techniques, enabling the creation of
interactive multimedia content efficiently and effectively.
 DSemonstrate the ability to troubleshoot and debug interactions within
Authorware, identifying and correcting errors in logic and functionality.
 Adopt a constructive mindset on the use of Authorware as a tool for design,
acknowledging that it can improve assessment results and learner engagement.

Introduction

Authorware is widely recognized as being one of the more efficient

multimedia packages available. Its interfaces are friendly, but must be practiced to
gain proficiency. Authorware is a software development tool for creating interactive
multimedia applications. It is primarily designed to facilitate the creation of
computer-based training programs. Authorware uses an icon-based approach to
programming, a highly integrated interface and a powerful scripting language.

Activity: Introduction to Interactive Design with Authorware

List at least 5 icons from the Authorware Application and include their functions.

1. Animation Icon- move preceding display along 5 possible animation paths.

2. Wait Icon-stop the execution until key/ mouse press or time out
3. Sound Icon-. Play digitized sounds
4. Video Icon- play video sequences from video players or through overlay
boards
5. Decision Icon- for branching to different execution paths . No user response
involve .
Analysis
1. What is the purpose of using variables in Authorware, and how can they be
utilized in interactive quizzes?
2. How do you import multimedia elements, such as images or videos, into an
Authorware project?

Abstraction

Authorware Basics

on the “running” icon on the menu bar to start the “welcome” multimedia presentation.
It is equivalent to select the “run” menu item in the “Try It” menu.

Set up a file

Select New File menuitem in the File menu or select new during starting up.

Choose File Setup menuitem in the File menu

A dialog box will open up for selection of

Presentation window size (Variable, 640x480, 800x600, 1024x758, full screen)

Icon Palette

There are system defined variables, e.g. current date and time, that can be entered as
text.

By selecting the Show Variable in the Data menu.

Click on the category pull down menu in the variable dialog. You will see a list.

For example, while entering the text, try the Fulltime variable in the Time category.

To allow the time text to be updated as dynamic text, select the text with the Fulltime
variable and then select the update display variable in the dialog box of effect menu
item in the Attribute menu.

When you run it, you will see the time go updated every seconds.

There are drawing tools (line, circle, rectangle, polygon) in the toolbox.

Animation Icon

Double click on the animation icon on the flow line the following dialog box appear.

Instruction for animation showing on the top line of the dialog box window.

You can select concurrent (to allow other action such as playing sound
simultaneously) or wait until done (sequential operation).

The animation can be stop by setting the condition (here keep moving when move =
2, move is a user defined variable).
The animation rate can be set by enter the number for speed or time. Use replay to
verify the animation rate and adjust.

Select the Change Type button. The following animation motion type
dialog box appear.
Erase Icon
The effect pull down menu provides special effects for making the selected object
disappear (zoom to line, zoom to point, fade, mosaic,…)

Wait Icon

A set of authorware documents are available in the file cabin of the PC Lab.
Ask the proctor for the menu or the headset. The headset comes with the
microphone. Its two connectors should be plugged in to the sockets in the front
panel of the PC. The red colored connector is for the microphone and should be
plugged into the right socket. The sound record program provided by the Microsoft
does not provide any quality adjustment. You may want to use CoolEdit96 to record
and normalize the sound.

B. Use of Audio
You can link sound to your piece while also specifying how you want the
sound to play. Authorware supports a variety of sound formats, including MP3
digital audio files.

1. Drag a sound icon from the icon palette to the flowline, placing it below the
Title display icon.
2. Name the sound icon Camera Sound, and double-click it.

isn’t necessary; you’ll align the text later), and type The World of 35mm
Photography.

The line above the text shows the margin width.

4. To change the size of the text, select the entire line of text and choose Text > Size >
14.
5. To make the text margin narrower, click the small square margin handle (not the
dark triangle) at the right end of the margin line, and drag it toward the end of the
