SELF ASSESSMENT TEST FINAL

(Chapter 10 : Magnetic Fields due to Electric Current)

Time : 1 Hour ] [Marks : 20

Notes :
1. All questions are compulsory.
2. Figures to the right indicate full marks.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SECTION – A

Q. 1. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) : (1 mark each)

(i) A single-turn coil in the shape of an equilateral triangle of side l carries
;
a current I as shown. A magnetic field B points in the direction AB. The
forces on conductors AC and BC are, respectively,
(a) zero, zero
(b) upward, downward
(c) out of the paper, into the paper
(d) into the paper, out of the paper. [1]

(ii) Two circular coils 1 and 2 have both their radii and number of turns in
the ratio 2 : 1. If the currents in them are in the ratio 1 : 2, the
magnitudes of the magnetic inductions at the centres of the coils are
in the ratio
(a) 1 : 1 (b) 2 : 1 (c) 1 : 2 (d) 1 : 8 [1]

Q. 2. Very Short Answer Questions (VSA) : (1 mark each)

(i) What is resonance condition in a cyclotron ? [1]

(ii) A coil suspended freely in a radial magnetic field rotates through 25°
when a current of 30 A is passed through it. Through what angle will
it rotate if both the current and the magnetic induction are 20% higher? [1]

Q. 3. Short Answer Questions (SA-I) : (2 marks each)

(i) Draw a neat labelled schematic diagram of a cyclotron. [2]

(ii) Explain the magnetic dipole moment of a current loop. State its
magnitude and direction. [2]

(iii) An alpha particle (carrying a positive charge q:3.2;10919 C) enters a

;
region of uniform magnetic field of induction B :(0.5i ;j 9k ) T with
; ;
a velocity v :(4i ;4j ;k );10 m/s. What is the force F on the
alpha particle ? [2]

SECTION – C

Q. 4. Short Answer Questions (SA-II) : (3 marks each)

(i) Using Ampe re’s law, derive an expression for the magnetic induction
inside an ideal toroid carrying a steady current. [3]

(ii) An alpha particle accelerated to 10 MeV on entering a magnetic field of

1.88 T traces a circular path of radius 24.2 cm. Find the mass of the
919 919
-particle. [e:1.6;10 C, 1 eV:1.6;10 J] [3]

SECTION – D

Q. 5. Long Answer Questions (LA) : (4 marks)

Show that currents in two long, straight, parallel wires exert forces on each
other. Derive an expression for the force per unit length between two
infinitely long parallel conductors carrying current and hence define the
ampere. [4]
