Decimals
MUKUNDA Coaching Classes Deesa
1.The fractions whose denominators are 10,100,1000 etc., are called decimal fractions.
2.A decimal number has two parts, the whole number part and the decimal part.
3. To multiply:
(a) a decimal number by 10 or powers of 10 : shift the decimal point to the right by as many places as
there are number of zeroes, e.g., 3.597 × 10 = 35.97, 3.597 × 100 = 359.7, 3.597 × 1000 = 3597, 3.597 ×
1000 = 35970 etc.
(b) a decimal number by a decimal number : Ignore the decimal point and multiply them as whole
numbers. The number of decimal places in the product is the sum of the number of decimal places both in
the multiplicand and multiplier.
Thus to multiply 52.8 by 0.197, multiply 528 and 197 and counting from the right, put decimal point after 4
digits in the product.Thus, 528 × 197 = 104016, ∴ 52.8× 0.197 = 10.4016.
4.To divide:
(a) a decimal number by 10 or powers of 10: Shift the decimal point to the left by a many places as there are
number of zeros, e.g., 627.65/10 = 62.7 ÷ 100 = 6.2765,627.65 ÷ 1000 = 0.62765, 83/10000 = 0.0083
(b) a decimal number by a whole number: Put the decimal point in the quotientdirectly above the
decimal point in the dividend. Divide as with whole numbers.
(c) a decimal number by a decimal number: Convert the divisor to a whole number by shifting the
decimal point to the right by the same number of decimal places as there are in the divisor. Then shift the
decimal point of the dividend also by the same number of places to the right. Now divide the newdividend
by the whole number divisor. Thus,
87.342.6873.4 ÷ 26, 0.0065 ÷ 1.13 = 0.65 ÷ 113
5.(a) Annexing zeros to the extreme right of a decimal number does not change its value, i.e., 0.6 = 0.6 =
0.600 etc.
(b) If the numerator and denominator of a fraction contain the same number of decimal places, then wecan
0.86 86 4.357 4357
remove the decimal point, e.g., = , =
0.97 97 0.893 893
6. To change fractions to decimals, divide the numerator by the denominator.
