Time for a challenge

hile our annual top events such as the World Grand Prix and the World League will put the fans on the edge of their seats, were already looking forward to this years double World Championships. In Italy and Japan I will experience both my first and my last World Championships as FIVB President, since I will not be a candidate again after 2012. I am very proud to assume this particular mantle from Dr Rubn Acosta, who succeeded in coordinating numerous events for many years. I hope that my successor will enjoy the same feeling of privilege in inheriting strong collaboration from national federations who know how to take good care of the best FIVB events. My personal goal will be to maintain at least the same level of quality we have seen in the past and, if possible, to increase television ratings and live audience figures at the venues compared to four years ago. We hope to see two top events in which every city hosting a pool plays the same role as the two cities hosting the finals, Rome and Tokyo. I know Japan will live up to their great reputation for managing such prestigious events. Having organised many FIVB World Championships during the past two decades I have complete faith in the Japanese Volleyball Association (JVA) and their partners, TBS Television. Im expecting an astonishing effort from Italy, which also has the responsibility of providing perfect facilities for our World Congress in Rome. Together with RAI TV, I know the Eternal City will warmly welcome our delegates while preparing for the best mens Volleyball show ever. While planning the busy FIVB agenda for the weeks ahead, I have often reflected upon how fortunate we have been during this period of economic crisis. Our sport was not overwhelmed, but a lot of clubs around the world are facing up to financial problems. Nowadays finding sponsors and partnership is not as easy as it used to be, but we believe we confronted the problems in the right way by networking with our Confederations and with all of our collaborators. I am certain that this autumn, Italy and Japan will demonstrate the success of this concept and show that teamwork never fails. Mr Jizhong Wei FIVB President

En Italia y en Japn vivir mi primer y mi ltimo Campeonato Mundial como Presidente de la FIVB, pues en el ao 2012 ya no ser candidato. Me enorgullezco de haber recibido esta responsabilidad de manos del Dr. Rubn Acosta, quien con tanto xito coordin numerosas competiciones durante muchos aos. Espero que mi sucesor se sienta igual de privilegiado al heredar esta estrecha colaboracin entre federaciones nacionales, capaces de organizar con tanta perfeccin los grandes certmenes de la FIVB. Me he fijado el objetivo personal de mantener al menos el mismo grado de calidad que hemos disfrutado en el pasado y, si fuera posible, aumentar los ndices de audiencia televisiva y la asistencia de pblico a los estadios con respecto a las registradas hace cuatro aos.Tenemos la certeza de que presenciaremos dos grandes competiciones, en las que cada sede de grupo adquirir tanta relevancia como las dos ciudades que albergarn las finales, Roma y Tokio. S positivamente que Japn estar a la altura de su estupenda reputacin que ha cosechado como anfitriona de mximos certmenes. He depositado toda mi confianza en la Asociacin Japonesa de Voleibol, organizadora del Campeonato Mundial de la FIVB a lo largo de las dos ltimas dcadas, y en su socio comercial, la televisin TBS. Tambin confo en el trabajo admirable de Italia, un pas sobre el que adems recae la responsabilidad de proporcionar las instalaciones perfectas a nuestro Congreso Mundial de Roma. Estoy convencido de que, en colaboracin con la RAI TV, la Ciudad Eterna recibir calurosamente a nuestros delegados mientras se prepara para ofrecer el mejor espectculo de Voleibol masculino de la historia. European titles, Olympic silver and bronze plus World Championship silver as USSR coach from 1970 to 1976. After that he was elected as an FIVB Vice-President, a post he held until standing down in 2008 during which time he became a regular member of the FIVB Board of Administration and served as President of the Rules of the Game, Sports Organising and Coaching Commissions. He was a pillar of the FIVB, who made an enormous contribution to international Volleyball, FIVB President Mr Jizhong Wei said. He had a tremendous work ethic and touched many lives within the international Volleyball community. During the 2004 Olympic Games, when he was the FIVB Olympic Games Event Director, Yuri Chesnokov reflected on the changes in his sport, 40 years on from his gold-medal winning exploits: In those days I was the main spiker and blocker yet I was only 1.91m. It is a sign of the times that we now see so many players over 2m tall. Over the years Volleyball has undergone a complete revolution and right now Volleyball is a wonderful spectacle.

Samaranch the champion of Beach Volleyball

he sadness felt on April 21, when former IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch passed away in a Barcelona hospital aged 89, not only reverberated through the Olympic family but struck a particular chord with the FIVB. The Volleyball family will always acknowledge the historic day when Beach Volleyball appeared for the first time in an Olympic Games in 1996, thanks to the great belief and leadership of the then IOC President Samaranch. Today, Beach Volleyball enjoys a global following of millions and it has seen growth over the past 15 years which has revolutionised the sport. This is no little thanks to Samaranch, who was a leader in his field and was the impetus behind having Beach Volleyball included in the Olympic Games. FIVB President Jizhong Wei acknowledged as much when he sent a condolence letter to the IOC President Jacques Rogge. The passing of President Samaranch is a big loss, particularly with regards to the Olympic Movement. The FIVB has always considered him as a leader of not only the Olympic Movement but also of the FIVB who has guided Volleyball, especially Beach Volleyball, to todays achievements. The FIVB family will always remember him as an excellent example of an international sports leader, and as FIVB President I have learnt a lot from

La familia del Voleibol siempre recordar la fecha histrica en la que el Voleibol Playa apareci por primera vez en unos Juegos Olmpicos en 1996, gracias a la gran fe y el liderazgo de Samaranch, entonces presidente de la organizacin. Actualmente, el Voleibol Playa disfruta de millones de seguidores en todo el mundo y no ha parado de crecer a lo largo de los 15 ltimos aos, lo que ha revolucionado la disciplina. President Samaranch. I remain always his student. Not only will the late Juan Antonio Samaranch always have a place in the hearts of all members of the FIVB for his Beach Volleyball Olympic Games vision, but he will also forever be remembered thanks to the statue in the gardens of the FIVB headquarters, kindly donated by the late IOC President in 1990 illustrating the strong relationship between the FIVB and the international Olympic body. The work, created by Spanish sculptor Rosa Serra, shows an athlete in action and artistically symbolises Volleyball. On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the IOC, it is with great pleasure that I hand over this work to one of the greatest sports of the Olympic movement, Samaranch said at the unveiling. It should be a symbol of the Olympic Movement as I understand it. A joining of sport and culture. As IOC President, Samaranch officially opened the FIVB headquarters in Chauderon in 1984 and then at Avenue de la Gare in 1988. In 2000 he was awarded the FIVB Grand Cross and said as he received it: Volleyball is one of the most important federations in the world and an example to others. Most recently, in December 2008, Samaranch was warmly welcomed by FIVB President Jizhong Wei during a visit to Chteau Les Tourelles, the current FIVB headquarters in Lausanne. In terms of shaping the modern Olympic Games, only Baron Pierre de Coubertin was more influential than Samaranch. If the former is regarded as the Games founder, the latter had such a profound impact on their development that even De Coubertin would have been impressed. Samaranchs many achievements as IOC President included ending the distinction between amateur and professional sport; adroitly managing TV rights; bringing gender equality to the Olympic Movement; devising the Olympic Solidarity Programme; and, by no means least as far as Volleyball enthusiasts are concerned, bringing Beach Volleyball into the Olympic programme. Making Beach Volleyball an Olympic sport proved a wise move, its fantastic to watch and the fans play a big part

in making it such a great spectacle, said Samaranch after he attended a Beach Volleyball match at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. The men behind the push to have the sport accepted as an Olympic discipline were former FIVB President Rubn Acosta and Carlos Arthur Nuzman, then President of the Brazilian Volleyball Federation and now President of the Brazilian Olympic Association and IOC member. In February 1993, they took advantage of Samaranchs presence at the sixth edition of the Beach Volleyball World Championships, held in Copacabana, Brazil, to recruit his backing for their bid to have the sport included at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Samaranch took just one day to get back to them. His response was positive: The International Olympic Committee has no objection in accepting Beach Volleyball as a new Olympic event; in the meantime, we will seek the approval of the organisers of the Atlanta Olympic Games, he wrote. Confirmation of sorts came in September that year. Convening in Monte Carlo, the IOCs Executive Board approved Beach Volleyballs inclusion on a provisional basis, although no further guarantees were provided, due to the fact that we are dealing with a new concept, in the words of the then IOC Director of Sport, Gilbert Felli. But the unquestionable success of Beach Volleyball in Atlanta, and then at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, dispelled any doubts about the sports future. It is my pleasure to announce that, during the recent meeting of the Executive Board on 11-13 December 2000 in Lausanne, Beach Volleyball was officially approved as an Olympic discipline, wrote Samaranch in a letter to the FIVB. He was the driving force behind the ruling. It was one of many occasions on which his support to the Volleyball world was to prove invaluable. With more than 20 years experience of working for Agence Efe, Ms. Elvira Atanes Sanchez and Ms. Natalia Arriaga are integral sports reporters for Efes Madrid office while Ms. Atanes Sanchez is also an esteemed member of the FIVB Press Commission.

The outstanding player in their history is Hugo Conte, the Maradona of Argentinean Volleyball who played at three Olympic Games, winning a bronze medal alongside Weber in 1988. He is sure the Argentinean fans will be out in force again this year. The country has probably changed a lot, says Conte, but we still have the same two passions we had in 2002, passions which are shared among our team and with the fans. First we love the shirt; those colours are really something we keep locked in our hearts. And the second thing is the game. We love to play, every Argentinean does. Being qualified for Crdoba already they will play the pool without pressure, and thats a key factor. His memories go back to the Luna Park venue in 2002 when the fans simply went crazy for the team. During their last match, against Italy in Buenos Aires, they never stopped singing. Vamos vamos Argentina, vamos vamos a ganar [Lets go, lets go Argentina, lets go, lets go on to win]. They will do the same in Crdoba, says Conte. Their support is irrespective of results and it goes beyond any situation. Its just a feeling. In 2002 we were in the middle of a terrible economic crisis, but for 20 days we managed to give people hope. After that last match Conte exchanged jerseys with the Italian setter Ferdinando De Giorgi, a close friend. I knew it was my last chance with the national team, I was already 39, but I never organised a farewell game. I did that for Waldo Kantor, I was the organiser and I felt terribly sad. A few minutes after it Waldo was no longer a player. I just couldnt stand that. I decided to play out my final matches in a different way. I wanted to share the court with my son and we played a season with Geba in Buenos Aires, the club where I started when I was 12. Waldo Kantor was coaching us, we didnt lose a single match, we won the championship and they even made a TV reality show about us! It was the best thing I ever did. Now its time for the younger Conte to face the World Leagues best teams. Facundo has some problems with his knee, but the team has a fantastic doctor in Gabriel Solari who can solve it. Hes not only an orthopaedist, he was our second setter in 1982. And how is Facundo measuring up to his dad? Well, I think he still needs more killer instinct in blocking and he has to learn more about the read block. But in serving, attacking and passing, well, hes already better than Hugo.

Chinese Taipeis preparations for the tournament have been rushed to say the least. After learning they would compete

in the tournament following Koreas withdrawal in April, they have had to get together quickly ahead of a difficult first match in Sao Carlos against hosts Brazil. The two teams join Italy and Japan in a complicated group which could easily trip up two of the favourites. Elsewhere USA will face off against NORCECA rivals Dominican Republic in their opening match, while an everimproving Germany will have a difficult test as they aim to overcome Poland in their opening match. China begin at home with a tough fixture against Puerto Rico in Chengdu, while the Netherlands will kick off their campaign against last years FIVB World Grand Prix eighth-place finisher, Thailand.

In her winning entry, Cecilia described how Volleyball has played such an important role in her life as she has grown up. She wrote: I have learnt the discipline of practice, to enjoy during friendly matches. I have learnt from my coaches, my teammates and my opponents. I have learnt how to deal with significant matches, even though I was only 14, what it means to enter the court with the heart beating because you know that if you win youre in, and if you lose, youre out. I have learnt to triumph with my team even if I havent been involved in the match, or to cry for an error which could have changed everything. Seth wrote a compelling seasons preview for local team Pepperdine Waves, which included this heartfelt salute

to head coach Marv Dunphy. Dunphy has immeasurable credibility with players and recruits. In his 26 seasons at Pepperdine he has guided the Waves to four NCAA mens Volleyball titles, coached 32 first-team All-Americans, and has been named National Coach of the Year. He was head coach of the gold-medal winning 1988 Olympic Volleyball team, and was inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame. Nobody prepares more than Dunphy, who records every play on film and has his staff constantly enter statistical data into computers during games. Id like to thank everybody who entered the Young Writers 4 Young Players competition, said FIVB Press Department Director Richard Baker. The interest has been overwhelming and just goes to show the strong interest in Volleyball, particularly youth Volleyball, for many up and coming journalists from around the world. Our two winners - Seth and Cecilia - will give us a unique perspective on the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and we are looking forward to working with them both.

he 32nd FIVB World Congress takes place from September 9-10 this year in Rome, ahead of the FIVB Mens World Championship, the final of which takes place in the same city a month later. More than 350 delegates representing 220 affiliated federations are expected to attend. The venue will be the Rome Marriott Park Hotel, and official dinners will take place at two of the Eternal Citys most beautiful locations: the Castel SantAngelo and the Palazzo Colonna. The World Congress, which is the FIVBs supreme governing body, is held every two years. The 2010 edition, which is not an elective Congress, will be preceded by a one-day workshop on

September 8 for all category I and II national federations, providing the opportunity for them to discuss issues with FIVB and Confederation officials while also providing a platform for the FIVB to update the federations on key developments within the organisation. The FIVB World Congress is the most efficient platform where the entire Volleyball family can congregate and exchange ideas and be fully updated on the happenings in the world of Volleyball, FIVB President Mr Jizhong Wei said. The money coming from sport will be put back into sport, this is an Olympic rule which the FIVB follows for the benefit of our players and Volleyball participants.

can propose development projects to be funded by the international governing body for Volleyball. These projects can be in collaboration with governments, NOCs or other external stakeholders; the goal is to improve the levels of performance of national federations by motivating them to prepare grassroots programmes that are eligible for funding, with a particular emphasis on youth teams for competition. The total amount allocated by the FIVB for 2010 is $5million. One of the aims of the FIVB Development Fund is to allow each federation to grow on its own merit, with a focus on building teams and establishing competitions at the national level, said Helgi Thorsteinsson, FIVB Technical & Development Director. But the Development Fund alone is not enough. It requires a vision of between four and eight years and each federation must ask itself where it wants to be in the future. Each project should have a clear timeline and it will require a lot of work on the part of each federation to reach the target they desire. The FIVB Technical & Development Department will monitor the progress made from the development perspective and, in close collaboration with the FIVB Finance Department, strict financial control will

also be maintained towards all applicants. A project can last for several years and we will support and pay according to progress made through the lifespan of the project. The FIVB Development Fund Steering Committee met for the first time at the start of June at FIVB headquarters in Lausanne, where they discussed and confirmed the functioning and procedures of the fund. The members of the committeee are: FIVB President Mr Jizhong Wei; Executive Vice-President, FIVB Treasurer and Steering Committee President Mr Andr Meyer; Executive Vice-Presidents Mr Habu Ahmed Gumel, Mr Vicente Araujo, Dr Sivanthi Adityan and Mrs Marta Centeno O. De Sajche; Julio Perez Alfaro from the Uruguay Volleyball Federation; FIVB Technical and Development Director Mr Helgi Thorsteinsson; and FIVB Finance Director Mr Yves Eymann. The FIVB Development Fund is crucial to the future of Volleyball and the well-being of the international Volleyball community

The Steering Committee also discussed and examined the first proposals, received from the Nigeria Volleyball Federation and the Confederations of South America, NORCECA and Asia. There were many positive aspects and many promising activities are foreseen, but some of the projects presented fall under existing FIVB programmes and they will be funded through those channels. This meeting sets the groundwork on how to proceed for a project which is crucial to the future of Volleyball and the well-being of the international Volleyball community, FIVB President Mr Jizhong Wei said after the meeting. We have an excellent opportunity to put in place the tools to enable all aspects of Volleyball to grow stronger around the world. As in any organization, we should be judged on our weaknesses, not on our strengths, and that is one area which the FIVB Development Fund will help the FIVB to address to enable the entire FIVB family to grow stronger together. A second Steering Committee meeting will follow during the 2010 World Congress, which will be held in Rome, Italy from September 9-10. In principle the Steering Committee will meet three times per year and will be looking to establish a calendar in 2011 in order to grant to federations a plan for when to schedule their requests.

Chinese women make pact with Devil Coach

he Chinese womens team, Olympic champions in Athens in 2004 and bronze medalists in Beijing four years later, are looking to bounce back under a new coach following a disappointing run of results last year. Wang Baoquan has led Tianjin to the top of the podium in the Chinese womens league for seven of the last eight years. Nicknamed the devil coach by the Chinese media, he is renowned for his strict and rigorous training regime. Even if I have to sacrifice my life, I will try all out to rebuild the glory of the Chinese womens Volleyball team, the 49-year-old Wang said following his appointment earlier this year. I know our team is very young and immature, but I have confidence that we can improve and rebuild a strong and competitive team through hard training. Born in Tianjin in 1961, Wang began to take regular Volleyball training at the age of 15. A year later he became the starting setter of the Tianjin mens team and in 1989 he was on the Chinese team that finished third at the Asian Championships. He joined the national womens team as a trainer in 1996 and worked alongside Jenny Lang Ping, head coach at the time, and Chen Zhonghe who later led China to World Cup and Olympic glory in 2003 and 2004. I learned quite a lot from Lang Ping, said Wang. The experience working with her still inspires me. Wang became the assistant coach when Chen Zhonghe was put in charge in March 2001 but he had to quit after a few months because of tuberculous meningitis, before subsequently leading Tianjins women into their golden era. Now he is back with the national team, which includes his daughter Wang Qian, a libero. Devil time began with a spring training camp when the girls, average age 22, spent seven to nine hours a day on court and in the gym, with only half a day free per week. At one training session open to the media, reporters were shocked to see the new coach smashing balls heavily and constantly to his players in defensive training. frica will be represented by two major clubs at the FIVB Mens and Womens Club World Championships in Doha, Qatar from December 14-21. The Al Ahly mens team from Egypt and the Prisons womens club of Kenya secured their tickets to the prestigious event following tough African competitions featuring the very best the continent has to offer. The Mens African Club Championship in Sfax and Sousse, Tunisia in April reached record-breaking proportions. There were 22 clubs from 16 countries competing for the title, the largest number since the event began in 1982; they played a total of 74 matches that allowed four African candidate referees to take a significant step further towards international level; every match of the competition, sponsored by Tunisian TV, was televised for the first time and transmitted via satellite to more than 10 African and Arab countries; and the competition featured all of the strongest teams in Africa, especially those from traditional Volleyball strongholds such as Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Cameroon and Libya. A 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-16, 25-16) victory over arch-rivals Zamalek gave Al Ahly their ninth African mens title. Al Ahly showed their consistency all through the competition, winning eight matches in a row and dropping just one set, in the final. Egyptian veteran Hamdy

IVB world champions Trentino BetClic of Italy re-affirmed their total dominance of mens club competitions by defending another of their titles with a 3-0 win over Dinamo Moscow in the final of the 2009/2010 CEV Indesit Champions League in Lodz, Poland in May. The Final Four event took place some three weeks later than originally scheduled following the Polish governments decision to cancel all public events, including sports competitions, after the April plane crash that took the life of Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife Maria and many others including the President of the Polish Olympic Committee. Mr Philip Berben, CEV Senior Vice President and Treasurer, said at the time: We are paying our full and highest respect and tribute to the victims of this tragedy and to the Polish nation. When play did get under way Belchatow enjoyed a brilliant start in their semifinal against Dinamo but were then hampered by too many mistakes in attack and failed to press home their early advantage, eventually losing 3-1 (23-25, 25-19,

25-21, 25-17). In the second semifinal Trentino BetClic were only really tested in the second set before cruising past the Slovenian surprise package Bled by the same 3-1 scoreline (25-13, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17). The final was a real one-man show thanks to Trentino captain Matey Kaziyski, playing against his former team. Trentino, who won this title in Prague last year, enjoyed a furious start with particularly powerful serving and Dinamo never fully recovered, going down 25-12, 25-20, 25-21. Tournament MVP Osmany Juantorena said after the match: We are definitely a great team. We came here very tired but we were very motivated and we expressed our full potential. Trentino will now go on to defend the FIVB Club World Championship in Doha later this year. The classification match was played in front of a completely packed arena. As was the case two years ago, the hosts failed to make it to the final, causing great disappointment within the Polish Volleyball family, but their many fans nevertheless created a wonderful ambience in the majestic Atlas Arena and were rewarded with a 25-16, 22-25, 31-29, 25-20 win for PGE Skra Belchatow which gave them the bronze medal.

l Trentino BetClic, club italiano campen mundial de la FIVB, reafirm su total preeminencia en las competiciones masculinas de clubes al defender otro de sus ttulos con un contundente 3-0 sobre el Dinamo de Mosc en la final de la Liga de Campeones Indesit de la CEV 2009/2010, disputada en mayo en Lodz, Polonia. El conjunto anfitrin, el PGE Skra Belchatow, qued tercero tras un emocionante triunfo por 3-1 sobre el ACH Volley Bled, que hizo las delicias de los 14.000 entusiastas que acudieron al Atlas Arena y propuls la tremenda popularidad del Voleibol en Polonia. Brazil building castles on the sand

he Brazilian Volleyball Federation (CBV) has announced plans for a Beach Volleyball Development Centre in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, thanks to a partnership between the CBV and the citys Town Hall. The centre, to be built on Black Sand Beach, will have four official sized courts and teachers trained by the CBV to coach players and promote social integration for young children in the city. This is the first step of a new project to spread Beach Volleyball throughout the country and to develop new players, said Dr Ary Graa, CBV President and FIVB Beach Volleyball Commission President. We hope that Natal becomes a new centre of Beach Volleyball in Brazil. We have the sand, the structure and will for sure have the athletes. Now it is just about working on it. Natal is one of the most important cities in Brazilian Beach Volleyball. It regularly hosts the Circuito Banco do Brasil, the premier Brazilian Beach Volleyball tour, and reigning SWATCH FIVB World Tour champion Juliana Felisberta started her playing career there. Once the centre is up and running the CBV aims to revamp its whole Beach Volleyball programme by creating a permanent national team with a view to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Brazil currently has 22 players training for FIVB Youth and Junior World Championships, 14 men and eight women who are based in Cefan, a military physical education centre in Rio, under the guidance of head coaches Antonio Leao and Marcelo Del Negro. We are looking for new concepts for Beach Volleyball and that starts with the youngest players, said Dr Graa. Our efforts are totally focused on renovation as we want to prepare the new generation to win at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games 2016. We are also looking at ways to increase the opportunities for the young to develop. These players will have the best structure in the world and the most experienced head coaches to work with. Brazil has had 303 world champions in Volleyball and we achieved such a high level with this outlook. Carolina Maxima, Rebeca Silva, Nicole Nascimento and Juliana Simoes are part of the girls youth squad who will be guided by Del Negro. Antonio Leao will be in charge of the youth male squad, which includes the Carvalhaes brothers Marcus and Gustavo, Felipe Hernandes,

Roberto Filho and Ramon Ferreira, as well as the junior team which includes Alvaro Filho and Vitor Felipe, FIVB 2009 Junior World Championship silver medalists.

construccin de un Centro de Entrenamiento Comunitario de Voleibol Playa en Natal, la provincia de Rio Grande do Norte (Brasil). Est previsto que el centro se construya en la playa de Arena Negra, y que disponga de cuatro canchas de dimensiones oficiales y de preparadores formados en la CBV, que entrenarn a los jugadores y fomentarn la integracin social de la infancia. Se trata del primer paso de un nuevo proyecto que persigue la difusin del Voleibol Playa por todo el pas y el descubrimiento de nuevos talentos ha declarado Dr. Ary Graa, Presidente , de la CBV y Presidente de la Comisin de Voleibol Playa de la FIVB. Estoy seguro de que Natal se convertir en la nueva capital del Voleibol Playa de Brasil. Tenemos la arena y la estructura necesarias y, con toda seguridad, tambin los deportistas. Ahora hay que ponerse a trabajar . Natal es una de las ciudades ms importantes en el Voleibol Playa brasileo: alberga con regularidad el Circuito Banco do Brasil, el principal Circuito Brasileo de Voleibol Playa. Adems, la vigente campeona del Circuito Mundial SWATCH FIVB, Juliana Felisberta, empez su carrera deportiva en Natal. La CBV persigue el objetivo de que reactivar su programa completo de Voleibol Playa, una vez que el centro se encuentre en pleno funcionamiento, con la creacin de una seleccin nacional permanente, con los Juegos Olmpicos de Ro de Janeiro 2016 como objetivo. Actualmente, 22 jugadores brasileos, 14 chicos y ocho chicas, estn preparndose para los Campeonatos Mundiales Juveniles y de Cadetes SWATCH FIVB, todos ellos en Cefan, un centro de educacin fsica militar de Ro de Janeiro, a las rdenes de los entrenadores Antonio Leao y Marcelo del Negro. Buscamos un nuevo concepto para el Voleibol Playa, que pasa por empezar desde la cantera, con los jvenes manifest Ary Graa. Centramos , nuestro trabajo completamente en la renovacin, pues deseamos preparar una nueva generacin de deportistas para que triunfen en los Juegos Olmpicos de Ro de Janeiro 2016. Tambin tratamos de encontrar caminos para ofrecer a los jvenes ms oportunidades de formacin. Estos jugadores disfrutarn de las mejores instalaciones del mundo y de los entrenadores ms expertos. En el palmars de Brasil figuran 303 campeones del mundo de Voleibol, un altsimo nivel que se ha alcanzado gracias a este planteamiento Carolina Mxima, Rebeca Silva, Nicole . Nascimento y Juliana Simoes forman parte de la seleccin juvenil femenina a las rdenes de Del Negro. Channon the Trinidad cannon

t the age of just 16 Trinidads Channon Andrea Thompson won the hearts of many in the Caribbean island with her stellar performance as outside hitter at the NORCECA Youth Girls Continental Championships in Guatemala earlier this year, where she scored a phenomenal 46 points against Costa Rica en route to becoming the tournaments top scorer. Thompson, an extremely humble and dedicated young athlete who expects much of herself, hails from a family of athletes. Her three sisters all swim and she herself began as a swimmer. But after being introduced to Volleyball she fell in love with the sport and has never looked back. But pleased as she was with her performance in Guatemala, she believes that more can be done and that there is more to achieve . She attributes her success to God, who has given her the talent, strength, calm (when needed) and guidance; her parents for the support and sacrifices they have made and continue to make; her team-mates; and her coach Francisco Cruz Jimenez and the rest of his staff. Her mother, Elisabeth, adds that in addition to her natural ability, Channons dedication and commitment to training has put her where she is today. Elisabeth Thompson is also full of praise for the Cuban coach Cruz Jimenez, better known as Panchy, who says that at first, due to

Thompsons height (1.81m), he thought she would have made a good setter. However, she was persistent and had natural jumping ability. She constantly surprised me during training, and continues to surprise me, he says. He also notes that Thompson has characteristics that all coaches would love their athletes to have, not all of which you can teach. He especially praises her mental strength, never giving up in training or in a game and always playing hard. Mushtaque Mohammed, President of the Trinidad and Tobago Volleyball Federation, says: Channon is a model athlete and she is the type of athlete that a coach dreams to have on his team to coach. I have no doubt that she will become one of the worlds top athletes in the future . Panchy believes that other athletes of Thompsons calibre can be produced in Trinidad and Tobago but infrastructural development is a necessity, as well as coaches who are fully equipped to take the athletes forward. What is sorely lacking is a permanent facility for Volleyball that will allow athletes and coaches to make the most of the time available and cater to those who may need extra tuition.

Thompson, voleibolista sumamente humilde y dedicada que espera mucho de s misma, proviene de una familia de deportistas. Sus tres hermanas se dedican a la natacin y ella misma empez como nadadora. Pero despus de aprender a jugar al Voleibol, se enamor de este deporte de una vez por todas. Aunque se mostraba contenta de su actuacin en Guatemala, ella cree que se puede hacer ms y que hay ms por conseguir . Atribuye su xito a Dios, que le ha dado el talento, la fuerza, la calma (cuando es necesaria) y la gua; a sus padres, por el apoyo y los sacrificios que han hecho y siguen haciendo; a sus compaeras de equipo; y a su entrenador, Francisco Cruz Jimnez, as como al resto de su cuerpo tcnico. Su madre, Elisabeth, aade que, adems de Dios, por concederle esa habilidad, la dedicacin y la entrega de Channon en los entrenamientos han sido los factores que han aupado a su hija hasta donde se encuentra actualmente. Elisabeth Thompson tambin canta las alabanzas del entrenador cubano Cruz Jimnez, ms conocido como Panchy, quien al principio

Mushtaque Mohammed, el Presidente de la Federacin de Voleibol de Trinidad y Tobago, asevera: Channon es una deportista modelo, el tipo de deportista que un entrenador suea con tener en su equipo. No tengo ninguna duda de que en el futuro se convertir en una de las mejores deportistas del mundo Panchy cree que en . Trinidad y Tobago pueden formarse otras voleibolistas de la categora de Thompson, pero que para ello es necesario desarrollar infraestructuras as como atraer entrenadores que estn plenamente capacitados para cultivar el talento de los deportistas. Lo que hace una tremenda falta es instalaciones permanentes para la prctica del Voleibol, que permitan a jugadores y entrenadores aprovechar al mximo el tiempo de que disponen y atender las necesidades de quienes requieran enseanzas ms exhaustivas.
