STRENGTH OF MATERIALS I
ASSIGNMENT # 1

Chapter 1 Stress and Strain

1. A punch for making holes in steel plates is shown below (a). Assume that a punch having
diameter d = 20 mm is used to punch a hole in an 8-mm plate, as shown in the cross-
sectional view (b). If a force P = 110 KN is required to create the hole, what is the average
shear stress in the plate and the average compressive stress in the punch?

2. Link AB. of width b = 50 mm and thickness t = 6 mm, is used to support the end of a
horizontal beam. Knowing that the average normal stress in the link is - 140 MPa, and that
the average shearing stress in each of the two pins is 80 MPa, determine (a) the diameter d
of the pins, (b) the average bearing stress in the link

3. Two wooden members of uniform rectangular cross section are joined by the simple glued
scarf splice shown. Knowing that P = 1 1 KN, determine the normal and shearing stresses
in the glued splice.

Chapter 2 Shear force and Bending moment

4. A 12 m span simply supported beam is carrying a uniformly distributed load of 2 kN/m

over a length of 6 m from the left end and point loads 6 kN, 3 kN and 4 kN at distances of
7 m, 8 m and 9 m, respectively. Draw SF diagram and BM diagram for the beam and find
the maximum bending moment. Indicate the numerical values at all salient points.

5. Construct the SFD and BMD for 10 m span simply supported beam subjected to a system
of loads as shown in Figure below. Indicate the numerical values at all salient points.

6. For the following simply supported beam shown below, derive the equation of the shear
forces and bending moments. What is the maximum bending moment? Please also indicate
at what distance it occurs.

7. The shear force diagram for the overhanging beam is shown in the figure below. (a) Draw
the loading diagram and bending moment diagram. (b) Find the magnitude of maximum
bending moment. (c) Please also determine the locations where the bending moment is
zero.
