FACILITATOR’S CALA GUIDE

CALA COMPONENT A

LEARNING AREA: Combined Science

LEVEL: Form 4

DURATION: 2 weeks

SYL TOPIC: Health and Diseases

SUB TOPIC: The life cycle of Malaria Vector

SYL PAGE: National syllabus page 76.

COMPETENCES/SKILLS:

Investigate, draw, collect data, present data, interpret, recommend.

BACKGROUND/CONTEXT:

It has been observed that many learners in the school's neighbourhood often absent themselves
from school due to malaria related illnesses.

THE CALA: This CALA consists of two parts A and B giving total marks of 45 marks.
Learners are required to do both.

PART A:

1. Identify the malaria vector. Study the stages in the life cycle of the malaria vector. (5)
2. Scout and identify the existing breeding places for the malaria vector within the school and
its neighbourhood. (5)

PART B:

1. Write a short report on your findings using the information you gathered in part A. In
your report name the vector for the malaria parasite. Draw and label the stages in the
life cycle of the vector.(15)
2. State and explain any 10 measures that can be used to prevent the spread of malaria
(20).

HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED:

Your facilitator will assess you through set achievement standards.

The achievement standards will be based on your skills to execute the

Guide lines as in activities in parts A and B and ability to be time conscious.

CALA TIPS:

This CALA assumes that you know what a disease vector is. The CALA also assumes you
know that the malaria vector breeds in stagnant water. It is also assumed that you have the
skills for data collection and presentation and to use ICT.

CROSS CUTTING THEMES:

The CALA demonstrates the inter-connections among Science (in knowledge on spread of
diseases), Mathematics (in data presentation and interpretation), Geography (in environmental
issues), English language (in report making) and ICT.
