the body.

3. Name three food items that provide fibre.

Answer: All kinds of fruits, vegetables and pulses have fibre.

4. Name one communicable disease and list its symptoms?

Answer: Tuberculosis.

Symptoms are dry cough, mild fever, feeling very weak.

V. Answer The following questions in two or three sentences.

1. What are deficiency diseases? Name any one deficiency disease and

explain how it occurs.

Answer: Deficiency diseases are caused due to insufficient amount of

nutrients in the food, especially vitamins and minerals.

Rickets is a deficiency disease caused due to lack of vitamin D and

calcium. The bones become soft and twisted.

2. Explain how communicable diseases spread.

Answer: Diseases such as cholera and typhoid spread through

drinking water and eating foods that carry the disease-causing germs.

Some communicable diseases such as tuberculosis, measles,

influenza, chickenpox, and swine flu spread through air. Flies sit on

dirt and garbage containing germs, and when they sit on food, the

disease-causing germs get into the food, causing diarrhoea, typhoid,

and cholera.

3. List four measures that should be taken to control malaria.

Answer:

i. Do not allow water to collect around your surroundings as mosquitoes

lay their eggs in water.

ii. Introduce fish in ponds. Fish feed on mosquito larvae and do not let

mosquitoes multiply.

iii. Sleep under a mosquito net, if there are mosquitoes in the

surroundings.

iv. Use mosquito repellent creams to keep mosquitoes away.

4. How do vaccines protect us?

Answer: Vaccines protect a person from certain diseases. They kill the

disease-causing microorganisms and reduce the risk of infection. After

vaccination, the body is prepared to fight away the infection, thus

preventing the occurrence of that disease.

1. Ria is 12 years old. Do you think she requires a protein-rich diet? Why?

Answer: Yes. Protein-rich diet helps in growth.

2. Jay usually plays chess while Johnny plays football. Who will need more

carbohydrates? Why?

Answer: Johnny needs more carbohydrates since playing football

needs more energy than playing chess.

II. From the given symptoms, identify the probable disease. Each

child is suffering from.

1. High fever with body ache and chills.

Answer: Malaria.

2. Round, itchy rashes on the skin.

Answer: Ringworm.
