STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY
Performance Task #1: Sketching the Normal Curve
Objective: The objective of this performance task is to demonstrate understanding of the empirical rule and the
distribution of data under the normal curve through creating sketches using mosaic art techniques.
Materials Required:
1. Short Oslo paper
2. Various materials for mosaic art (eggshells, old magazines, dried leaves, etc.)
3. Glue or adhesive
4. Pencil (for sketching outlines)
5. Ruler (for measuring and straight lines, if needed)
Procedure:
1. Understanding the Empirical Rule:
Review the concept of the empirical rule, also known as the 68.26% - 95.44% - 99.74% rule, which states that:
o Approximately 68.26% of the data falls within one standard deviation of the mean.
o Approximately 95.44% falls within two standard deviations.
o Approximately 99.74% falls within three standard deviations.
2. Preparing the Sketch:
Each student will use the short Oslo paper to create their own sketch of the normal curve.
Using a pencil, students will sketch the outline of the normal curve on their paper, leaving enough space to
represent each area under the curve.
3. Creating the Mosaic Art:
Gather the materials for mosaic art (eggshells, old magazines, dried leaves, etc.).
Begin filling in the sketch with the corresponding mosaic materials, ensuring to cover the entire area under the
curve.
Use different materials and colors to represent the data distribution under the normal curve.
Be creative with the arrangement of materials to make the mosaic visually appealing.
4. Finalizing the Sketch:
Allow the adhesive to dry completely.
Trim any excess materials from the edges of the paper.
Ensure the mosaic art is securely attached to the paper and there are no loose pieces.
5. Submission:
Submit the completed sketch by the specified deadline.
Rubrics for Grading:
