Overview of Computer Projects

This document summarizes the key concepts of IT projects and their types. Explains that a computer project is a set of interrelated actions aimed at achieving results within a defined deadline and budget. It then describes the fundamental elements of a computer project such as activities, resources and costs. Finally, it details the main types of IT projects such as research, development, equipment and construction, as well as educational projects of different scales.

INTRODUCTION
In this monographic work, it fulfills the function of informing and making known the
topic of computer projects and types of computer projects, as well as knowing
some concepts that must be applied in practice and that are essential for the
development of this subject.

1
CHAPTER I
COMPUTER PROJECTS

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER PROJECTS

Informatics or computing is the science of automatic information processing using
a computer (also called computer or computer ). This is a broad field that includes
the theoretical foundations, design , programming and use of computers .

The project represents the statement of a specific intervention that is expected to

have results that contribute to the achievement of the specific effects that a
program defines. As such, it expresses the operational level of the planning
process, so its methodologies and techniques will be commonly used.

WHAT IS A PROJECT?
"A project is a set of interrelated actions aimed at achieving results to transform or
improve a situation, within a limited period and with budgeted resources"
(Palomar, 2006)

It was born in response to the need to fulfill the objectives of organizations within
their purpose.

WHAT IS A COMPUTER PROJECT?

"A computer project is a system of simultaneous and/or sequential courses of
action that includes people, hardware equipment, software and communications,
focused on obtaining one or more desirable results on an information system"

A computer project is any information technology project that has an assigned

start and end date, often with specific milestones and objectives that must be met
during the development cycle. It could be things like changing out old servers,
developing an e-commerce website, or merging databases.

ELEMENTS OF A COMPUTER PROJECT

THE ACTIVITIES

2
They are the tasks that must be executed to jointly reach a pre-established goal
(desired objective); For example:
Gather information
Perform diagnostics
Make a design
Program
Write procedure manuals
Etc.
THE RESOURCES
They are the elements used to carry out the execution of each of the tasks; for
example:
Hardware, Software
Services
Capital investment
Personal information
Money and time.
DIRECT COSTS
They are all those that can be identified in the project and are associated with it,
they are those that are fixed or variable (materials, labor).
INDIRECT COSTS
They are those that are involved in the project, but have a relative importance
(rents, licenses, services)
FIXED COSTS
They are those committed, scheduled or planned costs that are incurred to provide
and maintain the operational capacity of the project.
VARIABLE COSTS.
They are those that fluctuate according to the project activity.

CHAPTER II
TYPES OF COMPUTER PROJECTS

3
The existing typologies respond to the need to classify the different projects that
are presented. The relevant typologies for IT projects are:

Application Development Projects : development and implementation of

computer programs or systems.

Equipment Projects: first-time acquisition of equipment, including both basic

hardware and software.

Improvement, expansion or replacement projects: increase in capacity and

quality of hardware services and/or software improvement.

Taking into account the risk criterion in execution and degrees of freedom in
implementation, we can distinguish another typology of projects:

Basic research projects: Basic research is research that is carried out with total
freedom to the point that sometimes there are no set objectives. Your freedom is
maximum and the risk of not achieving some result is very great.

Applied research projects: There are fewer degrees of freedom and you can set
some objectives to achieve, however, the risk is still high in this type of project. It is
in this type where the concept of project defined above begins to be applied, since
each investigation will be directed to a specific purpose and resources will be
assigned, although these may change over time.

Research and development projects: These are already very specific

applications that must lead to the production of prototypes and where a prior
design is carried out, objectives are proposed and a feasibility study is carried out.

Projects corresponding to the construction of any element : The degree of

freedom available in this type of project is even less than in previous ones, since
we know the cost, quantity and nature of the resources.

However, although computer projects for education can be considered in the

typologies mentioned above, there is a specific one created for this purpose:

4
Macroprojects : These involve the entire educational community , example:
Institutional Educational Project, that is, it is the main project that is developed in a
school institution and to which all other projects respond.

Mesoprojects : These involve some components of a specific educational

community, example: Educational Computing Project of a teaching department.

Microprojects : They are designed, developed and evaluated in the scope of a

classroom or in different projects of less complexity that are created within the
classroom divided into groups , example: Project on Ecological Protection at
School . This focuses mainly on student learning .

The latter is divided into two groups :

Depending on the origin of the topic:

Coming from the real world: They are based on a specific reality that involves the
participants or is a real case.

Simulation of a hypothetical context: They are generated for a hypothetical or

simulated situation, also known as a case study.

According to the design:

Unstructured: This is when the design is clear and specific, prepared intuitively,
generally by the students themselves.

Semi-structured: These follow a specific format, but leave the possibility of making
changes, redefining goals and objectives during their development.

Structured: They have a clear and specific design, which does not give rise to
changes or modifications.

5
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, this monograph tries to provide the essential techniques or
knowledge to be able to learn more about directing a computer project in the
future, knowing the definitions, functionalities and characteristics of this type of
project.
As well as differentiating the types of projects that we can find with their different
characteristics and functionalities.
