Woman: I failed my driving test today. It was really surprising because I’d done so well
on the practice tests. My family was surprised too; they thought I would pass. Everyone
was waiting for me when I got home, and I had to tell them. I was really embarrassed
about it, but they told me not to worry. My dad told me a really amusing story about the
time he took his test the first time and didn’t pass. It made me laugh, and I felt better
after that.
Now that I think about it, I think the instructor could see I was a little frightened when
driving on the highway, that’s probably why he failed me. Next time I’ll try not to be quite
so nervous.
Man: I did really well on my final exam. I was shocked. I thought I would get a C, so I
definitely didn’t expect an A. I think I’m going to apply to go to law school. I find law
fascinating.
Not all my friends did as well as they expected. Some of them were expecting As, but
they got Ds. That was really surprising. They were so disappointed with their grades.
amused
Paula was amused when I told her the story about the dog. She laughed, and said it
was the most amusing story she'd heard all week.

annoyed
I was stuck behind a garbage truck for half an hour! I was so annoyed because it made
me late for an important meeting. It's so annoying when things make you late.
disappointed
We lost the game. I'm so disappointed. I thought we would win. I'm really sad.
disappointed
I was out with David and I spilled his coffee all over the table. He looked really
embarrassed when everyone turned and stared.
fascinated
I'm really fascinated by this book about Antarctica. I'd love to go there sometime. The
landscape and the wildlife look fascinating.
frightened
The movie was good, but it was scary! We were both frightened.
surprised
Claire was surprised and happy when she learned that she won the writing contest.
shocked
We were shocked when we saw the email from our boss telling us that a lot of people in

Pedro: So, listen to this. I'm planning to buy two tickets for the zoo - for Isabel and me.
Pedro: Yeah. And I'll rent a bear costume. Here's a picture of it. I can see you're
fascinated, Tony.
Tony: Yeah… and frightened! Please don't say you want me to wear it.
Pedro: No. It's for me. I'm planning to wear it outside Isabel's office. So after work, she'll
find a bear waiting for her, with an invitation to the zoo. Well? What do you think?
Tony: She won't like it. Her coworkers will be there, so it's going to be really
embarrassing for her. I don't think she'll be amused at all. And this costume is awful! It's
going to scare her.
Tony: And why did you choose the zoo? I mean, she's not a kid. It'll be a disappointing
date.
Grant: You're so annoying, Tony. Where's your sense of fun? OK, so maybe she'll be a
little shocked at first, but I think she'll laugh. You should do it, Pedro! You'll be a hero!

Nick: Hey, Pete – last night I heard that’s it going to snow tomorrow.
Pete: In July? No way, Nick! Never! That’s fascinating! It never snows in July. Did they
say how much snow we’ll get?
Lena: Well, I think it’s going to be a great year. I’m going to graduate in June, but I won’t
start working right away. I’m sure some of my friends won’t be able to believe it, but I
really want to move to another country for a year or two after college.
Lena: Well, I have to go somewhere where I don’t have to spend much money, so I
think I’m going to travel to Lima and stay with my aunt and uncle. My cousin, Edgar, is a
really funny guy, so I’m sure it’s going to be fun.
Caio: How do you think you’ll feel when you leave Chicago?
Lena: I think that maybe I’ll be a little scared, but it’s going to be an exciting adventure!
Lesson 2
arrange
Sophia and I are planning a trip. She'll arrange the transportation to get us around, and
I'll look for hotels.
deal with
In my job I deal with problems from angry customers all the time. Today I helped a
customer find their lost luggage. They were really upset, but I found it, so they left the
airport happy.
forget
I was talking to my sister on the phone today and she told me it was my niece's
birthday. I completely forgot.
Let's get in touch with Jenny. Do you have her number? I will message her to see if she
wants to come to the show.

Woman: Ethan, can you tell Mr. Myers that I’ll be late to work today?
Woman: I left my laptop on the kitchen table, but I need it for work. I’m going home now
on the bus.
I’m looking into hotel room prices in Barcelona for our trip next fall.
Woman A: Did you book the train tickets for our trip tomorrow?
Woman B: Not yet. I’m going to deal with that this evening.

A: We finally booked our plane tickets! We’re going to San Francisco on July 16th.
B: No way! My sister and her boyfriend are flying to San Francisco on July 16th as well.
Maybe you’ll see them on the plane!
A: I’m meeting up with Erin and Sam on Saturday evening. Do you want to join us?
B: Saturday? Well, I’m working that evening, but I’ll check with my boss. Maybe I can
work during the day instead.
Mom: Goodnight, Carl. Remember, we’re leaving for the airport early tomorrow
morning.
Carl: Oh, yeah. Thanks, Mom. What time are we arriving at the airport?
Carl: OK, great. I’ll go and remind Dad to bring his passport. He almost forgot it last
year!
Man: Do you want to volunteer in this community? It’s a great experience even though
you don’t get paid. You can learn many skills that will help you in a future career. At the
soup kitchen, you can serve hot meals to people who need them. Or you can organize
boxed and canned foods at the food bank. The community center needs people to
organize basketball games and help with English classes.
Anna: I took a different kind of spring break in college this year. Instead of going to a
beach with my friends for a week, I went to a community center in Chicago. I
volunteered to work with teens and talked to them about either going to college to study
I’ll probably volunteer on vacation again. I might help at a food bank or a soup kitchen
next, or maybe teach or tutor young children. It’s a great feeling knowing that you’re
helping a community, which is the most important thing, but it also looks good on your
résumé. I think if you are applying for a job, or trying to go to college, it really helps, as it
shows that you’re both hard-working and caring.
Lesson 3
Andrea: I'm taking my driving test tomorrow, and I really hope I don't fail.
Teacher: There's no need to worry. You can take the test again, I think.
Andrea: Yes, but this is really important. My friends and I are driving from Salinas to
Esmeraldas next month, and I'll be one of the drivers. I have to pass!
Teacher: You sound really stressed, Andrea. Try to relax. You'll be fine. I know it.
Andrea: Thanks. I really appreciate it. And you're right – I should relax.
Teacher: Hello, Andrea. Are you coming to my English conversation hour tonight?
Andrea: Oh, no! I forgot! My parents are taking me out for dinner tonight – you know,
because I passed my driving test. I'm sorry, Ms. Ellis. I'm embarrassed!
Andrea: Thanks, but I feel so bad. Maybe I'll text my parents and cancel…
Teacher: No, don't do that. It's no problem. And congratulations on passing the test!
It'll be fine.

Andrea: Thanks. I really appreciate it. And you're right – I should relax.
Responding to reassurance:
Liam: I accepted that job in Buenos Aires, but it’s really far from you and my other
friends.
Ava: Don’t worry about it, we’ll keep in touch, and I’ll even come and visit you.
Ava: I know, but It’ll be fine. At least it’s an interesting city, and the pay is good.

Rachel: Jorge! I’m so glad to see you. I feel so nervous. My presentation is tomorrow!
Rachel: Thanks, but I’m sure I’m going to forget what to say.
Jorge: Hey, Rachel, relax. You’ll be fine. What’s the presentation about?
Jorge: So at least you know everyone. They’re all your friends. Don’t worry about it.
Rachel: Hmm. Yes, you’re right. Thanks, Jorge. I really appreciate it.

Lesson 4
Cindy: So, I have two ideas for the event. One is a barbecue in the park.
Min-soo: Hmm, maybe not. They just had a barbecue two weeks ago. What's your
other idea?
Min-soo: Well, how about going to a local baseball game? There are lots of games at
Green Park Stadium.
Cindy: I'm sorry, but I don't think it's a good idea – not everyone likes baseball.
Min-soo: But… Yeah, you're right. OK, my other idea – and this is a little unusual – is to
make a video of a pop song.
Min-soo: The students are the singers. They choose a song they like and practice it.
Then, when they feel ready, we make a video of them.
Cindy: That is so cool! They'll love it! And we can post the video online. It'll be a great
memory for them.
Min-soo: OK, I'll look into it a little more and then get in touch with you. Then we can let
the students know.
Cindy: So, I have two ideas for the event. One is a barbecue in the park.
Min-soo: Hmm, maybe not. They just had a barbecue two weeks ago.

My best friend just reminded me about something amusing I did last year.
I got in touch with my great uncle. He was surprised to hear from me.
Man: I’m meeting up with Tom and Jonas later. Do you want to join us?
Woman: I won’t come this time, but thanks. I’m getting up early tomorrow and I need a
good night’s sleep.
Man: No problem. But why are you waking up early tomorrow? It’s Saturday!
Woman: Ha, I know! I’m visiting my parents this weekend. It’ll take me a few hours to
drive there.
Woman: There’s no need to worry. You can call the bank and cancel your cards.
Man: Thanks, but I feel so bad. The wallet was a gift from my girlfriend.
There's no need to worry. You can call the bank and cancel your cards.
Sam: So, I've been thinking about Mateo's going away party next month. I have a
couple of ideas.
David: Hmm, I don't think that would work. The beach is 50 miles away, and some
people don't have cars.
Sam: Oh yeah, you're right. Well, how about dinner at Tony's Restaurant?
David: Yeah. I was thinking that we could go to a concert at City Park. There are
concerts there every Saturday next month.
Sam: That would be fun, but it's always so crowded. We probably won't be able to find a
space big enough for all of us.
David: Yeah, you're right. Well, how about a party at Alex's house? He has a swimming
pool.
Sam: Hmm, I don't think Alex's house is big enough for all of us. But a pool party
sounds like fun.
David: Hey, you work at the community center, right? Do you think we could have the
party there? There's a pool and a barbecue. And it doesn't cost much to rent it for a day.
Sam: That's a great idea! It's big enough for all of us.
David: Let's do it! I'll look into renting the center for the day. Let's meet up at my place
on Friday to figure out the details. Then we can email invitations to everyone.
Sam: I'm playing basketball in the afternoon, but I can meet you after!
Rosa: I’m planning to go on a little adventure next month with my husband and my dog.
We live in the city, but our dog really likes to run around outside, so we’re driving north
to the mountains for a weekend away. We arranged our stay yesterday and I was
surprised at how cheap the cabin was! We’re going to hike and read books and watch
Chris: Last Monday was a really bad day. First, I got stuck in traffic on my way to the
office, so it took 45 minutes longer than usual. That was very annoying. Then I gave a
presentation about a project I’m working on, but I couldn’t find the slides I’d prepared. I
had to just try to remember what I wrote. I was really disappointed it didn’t go as
planned. After that, I went for lunch, but I realized I’d left my wallet at home, so I couldn’t
buy anything to eat. Then when I got to the gym after work, something really
embarrassing happened. While I was leaving, I fell and knocked some equipment over.
Everyone turned and stared. It was awful!
But something really surprising happened the next day – my boss called me into his
office. He told me he loved the presentation and said that he wanted to take me out to
lunch. What a difference a day makes!
