Lesson 1

Lesson 1; Lesson introduction; Screen 3

Woman: I failed my driving test today. It was really surprising because I’d done so well
on the practice tests. My family was surprised too; they thought I would pass. Everyone
was waiting for me when I got home, and I had to tell them. I was really embarrassed
about it, but they told me not to worry. My dad told me a really amusing story about the
time he took his test the first time and didn’t pass. It made me laugh, and I felt better
after that.

Now that I think about it, I think the instructor could see I was a little frightened when
driving on the highway, that’s probably why he failed me. Next time I’ll try not to be quite
so nervous.

Lesson 1; Lesson introduction; Screen 4

Man: I did really well on my final exam. I was shocked. I thought I would get a C, so I
definitely didn’t expect an A. I think I’m going to apply to go to law school. I find law
fascinating.

Not all my friends did as well as they expected. Some of them were expecting As, but
they got Ds. That was really surprising. They were so disappointed with their grades.

Pedro: So, listen to this. I'm planning to buy two tickets for the zoo - for Isabel and me.

Grant: Isabel, your new girlfriend?

Pedro: Yeah. And I'll rent a bear costume. Here's a picture of it. I can see you're
fascinated, Tony.

Tony: Yeah… and frightened! Please don't say you want me to wear it.

Pedro: No. It's for me. I'm planning to wear it outside Isabel's office. So after work, she'll
find a bear waiting for her, with an invitation to the zoo. Well? What do you think?

Tony: She won't like it. Her coworkers will be there, so it's going to be really
embarrassing for her. I don't think she'll be amused at all. And this costume is awful! It's
going to scare her.

Tony: And why did you choose the zoo? I mean, she's not a kid. It'll be a disappointing
date.

Grant: You're so annoying, Tony. Where's your sense of fun? OK, so maybe she'll be a
little shocked at first, but I think she'll laugh. You should do it, Pedro! You'll be a hero!

Caio: What plans do you have for next year, Lena?

Lena: Well, I think it’s going to be a great year. I’m going to graduate in June, but I won’t
start working right away. I’m sure some of my friends won’t be able to believe it, but I
really want to move to another country for a year or two after college.

Caio: Wow. That’s fascinating. Where will you go?

Lena: Well, I have to go somewhere where I don’t have to spend much money, so I
think I’m going to travel to Lima and stay with my aunt and uncle. My cousin, Edgar, is a
really funny guy, so I’m sure it’s going to be fun.

Caio: How do you think you’ll feel when you leave Chicago?

Lena: I think that maybe I’ll be a little scared, but it’s going to be an exciting adventure!

Man: Do you want to volunteer in this community? It’s a great experience even though
you don’t get paid. You can learn many skills that will help you in a future career. At the
soup kitchen, you can serve hot meals to people who need them. Or you can organize
boxed and canned foods at the food bank. The community center needs people to
organize basketball games and help with English classes.

Anna: I took a different kind of spring break in college this year. Instead of going to a
beach with my friends for a week, I went to a community center in Chicago. I
volunteered to work with teens and talked to them about either going to college to study

for a career, or other job opportunities they had to begin a career that they would enjoy
right away. I think it’s so important that young people find something that’s right for
them.

I’ll probably volunteer on vacation again. I might help at a food bank or a soup kitchen
next, or maybe teach or tutor young children. It’s a great feeling knowing that you’re
helping a community, which is the most important thing, but it also looks good on your
résumé. I think if you are applying for a job, or trying to go to college, it really helps, as it
shows that you’re both hard-working and caring.

Cindy: I'm sorry, but I don't think it's a good idea – not everyone likes baseball.

Min-soo: But… Yeah, you're right. OK, my other idea – and this is a little unusual – is to
make a video of a pop song.

Cindy: What do you mean? Who's the singer?

Min-soo: The students are the singers. They choose a song they like and practice it.
Then, when they feel ready, we make a video of them.

Cindy: That is so cool! They'll love it! And we can post the video online. It'll be a great
memory for them.

Man: I’m meeting up with Tom and Jonas later. Do you want to join us?

Woman: I won’t come this time, but thanks. I’m getting up early tomorrow and I need a
good night’s sleep.

Man: No problem. But why are you waking up early tomorrow? It’s Saturday!

Woman: Ha, I know! I’m visiting my parents this weekend. It’ll take me a few hours to
drive there.

Man: Oh, no! I lost my wallet!

Woman: There’s no need to worry. You can call the bank and cancel your cards.

Man: Thanks, but I feel so bad. The wallet was a gift from my girlfriend.

Woman: These things happen sometimes. I’m sure she’ll understand.

Sam: So, I've been thinking about Mateo's going away party next month. I have a
couple of ideas.

David: Oh, good. What do you think we should do?

Sam: What do you think about having a day at the beach?

David: Hmm, I don't think that would work. The beach is 50 miles away, and some
people don't have cars.

Sam: Oh yeah, you're right. Well, how about dinner at Tony's Restaurant?

David: That's his favorite restaurant, but it's kind of expensive. I don't think everyone
can afford it. Plus, we're inviting a lot of people.

Sam: I guess that's true. Do you have any ideas?

David: Yeah. I was thinking that we could go to a concert at City Park. There are
concerts there every Saturday next month.

Sam: That would be fun, but it's always so crowded. We probably won't be able to find a
space big enough for all of us.

David: Yeah, you're right. Well, how about a party at Alex's house? He has a swimming
pool.

Sam: Hmm, I don't think Alex's house is big enough for all of us. But a pool party
sounds like fun.

David: Hey, you work at the community center, right? Do you think we could have the
party there? There's a pool and a barbecue. And it doesn't cost much to rent it for a day.

Sam: That's a great idea! It's big enough for all of us.

David: Let's do it! I'll look into renting the center for the day. Let's meet up at my place
on Friday to figure out the details. Then we can email invitations to everyone.

Sam: I'm playing basketball in the afternoon, but I can meet you after!

David: Great, I'll see you on Friday!

Rosa: I’m planning to go on a little adventure next month with my husband and my dog.
We live in the city, but our dog really likes to run around outside, so we’re driving north
to the mountains for a weekend away. We arranged our stay yesterday and I was
surprised at how cheap the cabin was! We’re going to hike and read books and watch

our dog exploring the forest. It's always amusing to see him chase squirrels – they're
much too fast for him! Anyway, we’re all excited.

Chris: Last Monday was a really bad day. First, I got stuck in traffic on my way to the
office, so it took 45 minutes longer than usual. That was very annoying. Then I gave a
presentation about a project I’m working on, but I couldn’t find the slides I’d prepared. I
had to just try to remember what I wrote. I was really disappointed it didn’t go as
planned. After that, I went for lunch, but I realized I’d left my wallet at home, so I couldn’t
buy anything to eat. Then when I got to the gym after work, something really
embarrassing happened. While I was leaving, I fell and knocked some equipment over.
Everyone turned and stared. It was awful!

But something really surprising happened the next day – my boss called me into his
office. He told me he loved the presentation and said that he wanted to take me out to
lunch. What a difference a day makes!
