short responses/ paragraphs.

7. Do not write in bullet form where a question is for 5 marks or more.

SECTION A: GEOGRAPHY

QUESTION 1: Natural Resources

According to an article on the water crisis in South Africa (Bega, 2023), water is a
precious resource and thus important to manage pollution and mismanagement.

1.1 In addressing water shortages, water privatisation is a possible solution.


However, privatisation is also a potential threat. Do you agree or disagree with
this statement? Why or why not? (5)

1.2 Water pollution has become a significant issue in South Africa due to the high
contamination levels from various industries and sewage.

In a response of about 250 words, describe your approach to teaching your


learners about the issue of water pollution in South Africa, covering both the
causes and potential solutions to the problem.

QUESTION 2: Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are 17 goals adopted by the United
Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The SDGs
aim to address the most pressing economic, social, and environmental challenges
facing the world today, from poverty and hunger to climate change and biodiversity
loss. Specific targets and indicators accompany each SDG to measure progress
towards achieving these goals.

2.1 Write a 1-page essay (500 words) discussing the following points:

• The significance of SDG 7.


• How poor implementation of SDG7 can negatively impact economic and
social development.
• Challenges that countries face in promoting the use of renewable energy
sources.
• Provide examples of policies or initiatives that can be implemented to
overcome these challenges.

Your answer should demonstrate a good understanding of the issues and provide
clear and well-supported arguments.

3.1 Draw and label the map reference number 3126 BC of Queenstown as a simple

sketch. (2)

3.2 How would you explain the differences between topographic and orthophoto
maps to grade 6 learners? Your explanation should include specific examples
and teaching strategies. (4)

QUESTION 4: The Scramble for Africa


The Scramble for Africa refers to the period between roughly 1884 and 1914 when the
European colonisers partitioned the – up to that point – largely unexplored African
continent into protectorates, colonies and ‘free-trade areas’ (Papaioannou &
Michalopoulos, 2016) - The scramble for Africa and its legacy.

Using the sources provided in addendum C, your knowledge and applying the
course material, critically evaluate how the African diaspora made and makes a
global impact on culture and society worldwide.

Your essay should have four paragraphs: an introduction, at least two paragraphs in
the body, and a conclusion. Your essay must include the following:

• a critical evaluation of the conquest of Africa and the various factors that
promoted imperialism in Africa.

• a discussion on the boundaries and economic and social systems imposed by


the Scramble still affect the politics and economy of Africa today.

QUESTION 5: Civil Rights Movement


History is thickly imbricated in our everyday lives. In other words, various social
movements and events have long histories contributing to their historical discourses.

Looking at the above statement, write a paragraph of at least 250 to 350 words in which
you critically examine the Civil Rights Movement and explain its discourse as a form of
resistance in History.
