Shunt Reactor Switching

Source impedance calculation Shunt reactor impedance

Voltage = 132 kV
calculation

Fault current = 40kA Rating: 30MVAR

X/R ratio = 15 X/R = 577

R =Zact/ √(1+(X/R)2) For Shunt reactor Q= woL/ R

Zact =VL-N/I3ph =76.21/40 Wo = 2πf

= 1.905Ω f =fundamental frequency

R1 = 1.9/ √1+152 = 0.126Ω XL = KV2/MVAr

X1 = √Zact2 – R2 =1.89Ω = 1322/30 = 580.8Ω

XL = 2πfL L2 = XL/2πf = 580.8/2x3.14x50

L1 = 1.89/ 2x3.14x50 = 0.00602Ω = 1.848 H

R2 = XL/(X/R) = 580.8/577
= 1.0067 Ω
RESULT
Switching at the voltage peak
Switching at voltage zero

When the shunt reactor / inductive circuit is switched ON at a voltage peak, the current flowing
through the circuit is the same as the rated current of the shunt reactor. However, when switched
ON at voltage Zero, the current reached up to 1.7 times the rated current, and then the magnitude
of the current started reducing to reach its rated current. Hence it is advisable to switch ON the
inductive circuit at the Voltage peak to reduce the initial energization current.
