include a coffee stop beforehand? Having a cup in your hand creates the
opportunity for distraction, you might fiddle with it or miss a question while
taking a sip of coffee. Worse still, its contents may end up on the desk, which
will result in the interview remembering you for all the wrong reasons.
2. Ignorance of the company
In this age of technology, it is inexcusable not to know anything about your
prospective employer. Most company websites these days have an “About us”
section giving company history, locations, and a mission statement. Do some
research before the Big Day and you won’t be stumped if the interviewer asked
you a question about the place where you, theoretically, want to work.

3. Talking too much

An interview is a professional situation, not a personal one, so the interviewer
will not want to hear your life story. While you need to answer all the questions
you are asked, your response should be focused and to the point. Don’t get
side-tracked and talk about your home life, your partner, and any children you
may have-save this for the first day on your new job when you are getting to
know your colleagues.

4. Criticizing past employers

It is important to maintain a positive attitude throughout the interview, even
when discussing things that have gone wrong. Don’t let the interview know that
you want to leave your current job because you can’t stand your boss. Saying
unpleasant things about your colleagues is not a good idea, because the
interviewer might know them. Also, you will be showing him how you will speak
about his company if you leave on bad terms in the future.

5. Doubts about your resume

Not being familiar with your past history of employment creates a very bad
impression. It suggests that either you have a very bad memory, or you made up
some of the facts. Make sure you know the basic information by heart because
the interviewer is sure to ask you about it. If you really do have a bad memory,
take a copy to refer to, but do not appear to be reading it out loud.

BURGLARY AND HOW TO AVOID IT

A recent survey of crime statistics shows that we are all more likely to be
burgled now than 20 years ago and the police advise everyone to take a few
simple precautions to protect their homes.

The first fact is that burglars and other intruders prefer easy opportunities, like a
house which is very obviously empty. This is much less of a challenge than an
occupied house, and one which is well-protected. A burglar will wonder if it is
worth the bother.

There are some general tips on how to avoid your home becoming another
crime statistic. Avoid leaving signs that your house is empty. When you have to
go out, leave at least one light on as well as a radio or television, and do not
leave any curtains wide open. The sight of your latest music centre or computer
is enough to tempt any burglar.

Never leave a spare key in a convenient hiding place. The first place a burglar
will look is under the doormat or in a flower pot and even somewhere more
'imaginative' could soon be uncovered by the intruder. It is much safer to leave a
key with a neighbour you can trust. But if your house is in a quiet, desolate area
be aware that this will be a burglar's dream, so deter any potential criminal from
approaching your house by fitting security lights to the outside of your house.
But what could happen if, in spite of the aforementioned precautions, a burglar
or intruder has decided to target your home? Windows are usually the first point
of entry for many intruders. Downstairs windows provide easy access while
upstairs windows can be reached with a ladder or by climbing up the drainpipe.
Before going to bed you should double-check that all windows and shutters are
locked. No matter how small your windows may be, it is surprising what a
narrow gap a determined burglar can manage to get through. For extra security,
fit window locks to the inside of the window.

What about entry via doors? Your back door and patio doors, which are easily
forced open, should have top quality security locks fitted. Even though this is
expensive it will be money well spent. Install a burglar alarm if you can afford it
as another line of defence against intruders.

A sobering fact is that not all intruders have to break and enter into a property.
Why go to the trouble of breaking in if you can just knock and be invited in?
Beware of bogus officials or workmen and, particularly if you are elderly, fit a
chain and an eye hole so you can scrutinize callers at your leisure. When you do
have callers never let anybody into your home unless you are absolutely sure
they are genuine. Ask to see an identity card, for example.

If you are in the frightening position of waking in the middle of the night and
think you can hear an intruder, then on no account should you approach the
intruder. Far better to telephone the police and wait for help.

Roamers
In 1989 a young Australian was travelling around Europe and found himself at
his British hotel after closing time – at ten in the morning. Whilst most of us
might take this as an opportunity to find a cosy bed and breakfast or at least a
dry bench in a railway station, Matt Lassiter spotted a business opportunity.
Knowing that he was not alone and that thousands of backpacking youngsters
were wandering the world with heavy bags and fat wallets, Lassiter came up
with a plan to start his own hostels that made young visitors feel at home
whenever they arrived. “I realised there was not so much a gap in the
backpackers’ market, but rather a canyon.”
A couple of years later, Lassiter formed his own company which he called
Roamers. His intention was to focus on creating hostels which would provide
accommodation for the dynamic youth tourism market. “The average
backpacker, around 18-21, is likely to be highly educated, often taking time off
between school and university and usually has quite a bit of money to spend,
and these are the people Roamers sets out to attract,” says Lassiter.
Today, Roamers operates in more than 20 countries, has 70 hostels and provides
1.5 million bed nights each year. Lassiter says that each hostel is like a kindly
aunt or uncle looking after young people. Backpackers like that, and their
parents like it even more, not because Roamers is a fun environment, but
because Roamers offers a safe and secure form of accommodation.
A typical hostel has showers and toilets on each floor, a “chill out” room with
television, food, bar and drinks facilities, a laundry room and internet access.
Lassiter was very aware that his bright young customers would be familiar with
the internet and it would play an important part in marketing his company.
Part of Lassiter’s success is knowing that backpackers want to feel like
explorers. “We have to be very careful how we market our products – it must be
their decision and not seen as a package holiday – we make them think they are
independent.” The Roamers technique is to offer pre-booked two or four-day
tours, a couple of nights recovering from jet-lag, a welcome pack, clean sheets –
no sleeping bags – and a free call home. The formula is certainly working,
which goes to show that Lassiter’s instincts are exactly right for this growing
holiday market.

DIGITAL CONNECTIONS
Technology is connecting us in ways never seen before in human history. How
will that change our societies, our relationships, ourselves ?

That’s the question that interest Michael Wesch. The last time communications
technology had such a wide-ranging impact was 500 years ago with the
invention of the printing press. Being able to print texts instead of writing them
by hand transformed the world. It changed the way people could communicate
with each other. Suddenly, multiple copies of books could be made quickly and
easily. As more books became available, ideas spread much more rapidly. But
what will be the impact of digital technology, the most powerful connecting tool
we have ever seen?

Michael Wesch argues that communication is fundamental to our relationship,

so it follows that a change in the way we communicate will change those
relationships. Wesch, a university professor, explores digital communication in
his work. In particular, Wesch and his students look at social networking tools
and other interactive Internet means like Youtube. When people create and
share personal videos on Youtube, anyone anywhere can watch them. Wesch
say that this leads to some
people feeling a sort of deep connection with the entire world. But it’s not a
real relationship, it’s not the same as the connection you feel with a member of
your family. In fact, as Wesch says, it's a relationship without any real
responsibility that you can turn off at any moment. So does it make sense to talk
about a Youtube “Community”?

Wesch himself experienced the impact of digital media when he created and
posted his own short video on Youtube. It attracted immediate attention and has
been viewed millions of times. In his video, he tells us that webpages get 100
billion hits a day and that a new blog is started in half a second. He asks us to
think about the power of his technology and how we use it. What could we do
with it? What is its potential?

Wesch isn’t interested in what new media was originally designed for, but in
how it can be used in other ways. For example, social protest such as gathering
signatures for online petitions can now be done using Facebook. He says that
it’s important to end up in control of the technology, not vice versa.

Out of the university, in the real world, Wesch believes it’s crucial for people to
be able to use the new environment of digital media for the greatest possible
impact “It’s the tragedy of our times that we are now so connected we fail to
see it. I want to believe that technology can help us see relationships and global
connections in positive new ways. It’s pretty amazing that I have this little box
sitting on my desk through which I can talk to any one of a billion people. And
yet do any of us really use all the potential that’s there?

other people
61. What does Wesch say about Internet relationship

A. They are not like real relationship

B. he doesn’t understand them

C. they are the same as family relationships

62. What does Wesch say about digital media

A. social networking has no useful purpose in the real world

B. people should find new uses for these applications

C. connecting to more and more people has no real value

63. Which of the following statement is NOT mentioned in the text

A. Wesch has posted video of different topics on youtube.

B. Wesch thinks we have not used digital media to its full potential

How to master the art of selling

1. People dislike selling

Selling i s an area of business that many people dislike, whether it's

telemarketing or face-to-face selling. lt takes quite a bit of skill to become an
effective salesperson, but through developing a particular mindset and following
some important advice, you can begin to master it.

2. Confidence
One of the most important attributes to have when selling is confidence - you
must sound and appear confident.
Remember that many of the most confident people aren't inwardly confident,
yet they can show confidence on the outside.

3. Know your business

There's nothing worse than a salesperson who doesn't fully understand what
they are selling.
Make sure that you know your product, business and industry inside out.

4. Appearance
Research suggests that you have less than 30 seconds to interact with someone
before they form an opinion of you.
For face-to-face selling, having a professional appearance is vital.
For selling over the phone, the first 15 seconds are vital, so make sure you know
what you intend to say.
Getting words mixed up or sounding hesitant will result in a bad first
impression.

5. Numbers, numbers, numbers

Rejection will happen, but don't take it personally.
Too many people focus on this rejection and often end up making contact with
fewer prospects than they otherwise would.
You will receive setbacks, but the more people you call, the more leads or sales
you'll make.
It's a numbers game – hit the high numbers, and success will almost always
follow.

6. Develop a sales process

Don't think that you have to make a sale the first time that you speak to a
prospect.
Many telemarketers know this and rarely attempt to generate sales, but instead
focus on leads.
A lead may be anything from obtaining permission to e-mail over some more
information to organizing a meeting in person.

7. Know how far you’ll negotiate

Never call a prospect or attend a sales meeting without knowing how far you'll
negotiate.
You should know your starting point, the point which you won't drop below and
a mid-way point which you'll aim for.

8. The sales mindset

Finally, seasoned sellers talk of adopting a 'sales mindset'.
Don't approach selling with dread, as an area where rejections are
commonplace.
Selling should be a challenge.
You should enjoy closing deals, making sales, and each rejection should be
looked on as a result - you're one step closer to meeting your next customer.
