Learning Intention:
For students to demonstrate an ability to use poetic techniques effectively and analyse poetry
using the ART WARS analysis system.
Task Description:
Poetry analysis and anthology. Students will analyse one poem using the ARTWARS system and create a
collection of 10 poems. Students must do one each of the poetry types below and 4 other poems. No more than
2 of the same type can be done for the anthology.
Quatrain - The quatrain is a four-line stanza. The four lines alone can be a single poem, or the poem can
consist of more than one stanza at a time. Common quatrain rhyme schemes include: aabb, abba, aaba, abcb
— though they can be unrhymed as well. At least 2 stanzas for one poem.
Couplets - Most simply, couplets are just two rhymed lines. Do at least 4 couplets for one poem.

Haiku: Haiku poems are non-rhyming and have 17 syllables, broken up into a 5-7-5 formation
Tanka: is the modern name for classic Japanese poetry, meaning “short poems.” Tanka poetry is non-
rhyming. There are five lines in a tanka with a meter pattern of 5-7-5-7-7.
Students will also include an analysis of a poetic text as part of their anthology.
