OBJECTIVES:
The Course will enable learners:
To study the concepts of matrices and its applications.
To study the concepts and its applications of ordinary differential equations
To acquire knowledge solving problems in differential calculus.
To study the concepts of functions of several variables
To acquire the basics of vector calculus and its applications.
UNIT - I LINEAR ALGEBRA 6+3+6=15
Characteristic equation – Eigen values and Eigen vectors of a real matrix – Properties of Eigen values and Eigen
vectors (Excluding proof) – Cayley Hamilton theorem (excluding proof) – Quadratic forms – Reduction of quadratic
form to canonical form by orthogonal transformation.
List of Exercise/Experiments: (Theory – 6, Tutorial – 3)
1. Calculate the characteristic equation and eigenvalues.
2. Find eigenvector and diagonalization of a given matrix.
(Laboratory – 6)
UNIT - II ORDINARY DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS 6+3+6=15
Linear differential equations of second and higher order with constant coefficients – Differential equations with
variable coefficients – Cauchy’s and Legendre’s linear equations – Method of variation of parameters.
List of Exercise/Experiments: (Theory – 6, Tutorial – 3)
1. Evaluating ODE with constant coefficients
2. Solving ODE with variable coefficients
(Laboratory – 6)
UNIT - III DIFFERENTIAL CALCULUS 6+3+6=15
Curvature - Radius of curvature (Cartesian co-ordinates only) – Centre of curvature and Circle of curvature –
Involutes and Evolutes (Parabola, Ellipse, Hyperbola and Rectangular hyperbola).
List of Exercise/Experiments: (Theory – 6, Tutorial – 3)
1. Find the radius of curvature.
2. Find the Involutes and Evolutes.
(Laboratory – 6)
UNIT - IV FUNCTIONS OF SEVERAL VARIABLES 6+3+6=15
Partial derivatives – Euler’s theorem for homogenous functions – Jacobians - Taylor’s series expansion - Maxima
and Minima for functions of two variables – Method of Lagrangian multipliers.
List of Exercise/Experiments: (Theory – 6, Tutorial – 3)
1. Find the Taylor’s series for functions of two variables.
2. Evaluating the maxima and minima.

UNIT - V VECTOR CALCULUS 6+3+6=15

Gradient, Divergence and Curl – Directional derivative – Irrotational and solenoidal vector fields – Green’s theorem
in plane, Gauss divergence theorem and Stoke’s theorem (Cube, Cuboid and Rectangular paralleopiped only).
List of Exercise/Experiments: (Theory – 6, Tutorial – 3)
1. Evaluating directional derivative, divergence and curl.
2. Determine line integral, surface integral and volume integral.
