Introduction

Welcome to Version 1.1 (Q2 2002) of our “MESA/Boogie Technical Support Pack”. This Acrobat file contains schematics, modifications and
other useful information to make servicing our products and supplying spares accurate and easy. Hopefully it will save you a lot of time.

The pack is split into sections according to amplifier model and is indexed to save you having to search through hundreds of pages to get to
what you need. At the end there is some supplemental information which relates to a number of different products.

Where possible we have digitally created the product schematics, but there are a large number of older amps which have hand drawn
schematics too. To save time, we decided to digitize the most common ones and include the rest as images. The images are still useful but
may not be as “polished” as the digitized schematics. The same goes for some of the modifications. You can see what we have added since
the last version of the pack was released by checking out the “What’s New?’ page. In addition in the coming updates as the front and rear
panel diagrams begin to appear each changed cell (and therefore a changed part) will be highlighted, so you know when you need to start
specifying a new part number for a part.

Within this file lies much of the heart of MESA/Boogie - Our product designs. Please be aware that every single circuit, diagram and chart
detailed here is owned by MESA/Boogie Ltd and is copyrighted. In addition to this many of our circuits are also Patented. By storing or
opening this document on your computer, printing it out, reading it or just passing it on to someone else you are unconditionally agreeing that
you will not replicate, modify or divulge this information to anyone outside of your organisation, and/or to anyone who will not be specifically
using it to service or support a MESA product. If you don’t agree with these conditions, then please close the document immediately and
destroy it. We understand that you may want to print out a number of manuals for your service engineers and customer service
representatives, but please make sure that they do not allow the document to fall into the wrong hands; Also make sure they fully understand
their obligation to keep the information in the pack confidential. A lot of people worked VERY hard to put this information together (and that

The "Tremoverb" amplifier has two 47-ohm, 1/4-watt resistors Mesa/Boogie to arrange a factory repair.
(one is located mext to the pair of relays and is connected
to LDR #3 - Location 26-E on diagram below. The other is
next to and connected to LDR #13 - location 14-B below).

Please replace both of these 47-ohm resistors with 220-ohm, 1/2 watt resistors.

Also, the 68-ohm resistor that is connected to LDR's 11 & 12

(location 14-C below) should be increased to 360-ohms.

Finally, please REPLACE LDR's #3 (type 5C4/2), #11 (5C9), #12 (5C9) and #13 (5C4).

ROAD KING SERVICE ADVISORY

To all MESA/Boogie Dealers, Distributors, Service Centers and Road King Owners:

March 13, 2002

Good News: The performance and acceptance of the new Road King has been fantastic, everybody is
loving this toneful, groundbreaking instrument and we’ve heard nothing but raves about its performance.
Thanks for your help in getting it launched. I expect we’ll be building Road Kings ten years from now!

Bad News: The launch hasn’t gone off totally without a hitch; there has been a half-dozen field failures (out
of 500) and we are asking for your immediate help to prevent this number from growing.

To ensure reliability, please take your Road King to an Authorized Service Technician right away for a
simple modification. This mod will have no effect on the tone or performance but will totally eliminate the
possibility of the trouble occurring. We want all Road Kings under Serial Number 500 to be modified
before being sold, and those already sold to be brought in right away for this fast and easy service mod.
Amplifiers that have been modified should be marked by underlining the Serial Number with an indelible
marking pen.

We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and will of course pay the cost of the mod under warranty.
We prefer to play if safe by notifying all interested parties and heading off the possibility of this problem
occurring.

Modification Details and Instructions for the Service Technician:

We need your help in making a simple modification to the new Road Kings. It consists of pulling the
chassis, removing two 12AX7 tubes, cutting BOTH ends of a circuit board trace (accessible through the
12AX7 holes) and replacing the cut trace with a jumper wire. Fully illustrated instructions follow this letter
and are also available by contacting Richard Duvall in our Service Department at 707-789-3324.

Once the chassis is in front of you, this procedure will take about five minutes and will totally eliminate
any possibility of high-voltage arcing between the cut trace and a nearby filament trace. After performing
the mod, please mark the amplifier by underlining the Serial Number with a permanent felt tip pen and send
us the warranty paperwork, including the Road King’s Serial Number.

The background of the problem is a bit of a mystery. We are surmising the potential arching to be caused
by incomplete etching (or dirt) and it is possible that we are over-reacting by insisting on doing this mod.
In production, all amplifiers were repeatedly turned on and off at the factory, thoroughly teched-out,
burned-in for 24 hours, and play-tested twice without exhibiting any instances of this problem.

Once discovered, we have even hi-pot tested the suspect traces to 1000 volts…..again with no problem. So
it is possible that the trouble will be limited to those already affected. But we prefer to play it
safe…especially since in extreme cases the arching can cause damage to the circuit board. To prevent this
possibility, we want all Road Kings modified before sale or, if already sold, to please have it brought in
right away for preventative service.

We want these amplifiers to be rock solid…and otherwise they have been. We think it’s better to
acknowledge the possibility of a problem and eliminate it…and we thank you very much for helping us do
just that. The Musicians also thank you…and we’ve never forgotten: That’s who we’re working for!

 1. Remove chassis from cabinet.
2. Remove Tube shields & 12AX7 tubes from V3 and V4
3. Cut trace in two places as shown below. Trace runs from

pin 6 on V3 to pin 1 on V4.
4. Blow away dust from Pcb; make sure traces are cut well,
and ends of trace are not touching any other barrels.
5. Put 12AX7s & tube shields back in chassis.
6. flip chassis up so top of pcb is facing up.
7. Tack on a 4 1/2" wire from pin 6 of V3, and run other
end under ribbon cable to pin 1 on V4.
8. Give the wire a tug, to make sure solder joint is good and
strong. (see diagram below for steps 7 & 8.)

REGARDING: Mesa/Boogie “Road King” update

You should have already been informed of a minor yet important update to the
PC board of our “Road King” amplifier – cutting a trace, and replacing it with a
jumper wire. (If you are not aware of this update, please call us so we can get
you “up to speed” on it).

Additionally, whenever you are working on a Road King, we are also asking you
to inspect the “PENTODE/TRIODE” switch (located near the EL 34 tubes) to
ensure that it is the LATEST VERSION of the switch (new version is larger
larger and handles more current). The new switch – Mesa part number “602110”
– is rated at 10A/250 VAC (or 15A/125 VAC). It’s “body” measures 1 ¼” by
¾” and is made by “Carling”. Whereas the old switch body measures only 1” by
½”, and is not the “Carling” brand. Serial numbers below 500 may possibly have
the old switch type – if so, please replace with the newer type.

The new switch has an opposite polarity compared with the original switch –
the new switch has the traditional ‘left position of bat connects right terminals’
diagonal alignment. The old switch was the reverse of this. So if you call us to
order the new switch, we will also send you a new label to replace the existing
“Pentode/Triode” label. The new label will say “Triode/Pentode” .

If you perform both Road King updates at the same time (trace update and
switch update), we will pay 1 ¼ hours on a warranty claim. Please contact me at

Modifications
 Rectifier FU-2 Bigfoot conversion mod.

This modification is for Rectifier FU2 series footswitch boards. Modification will solve
“No FX loop at footswitch” You will need a Philips head screw driver, soldering iron,
solder, and two ½” pieces of insulated wire.

First, remove the plastic side of the footswitch with the din jack, by unscrewing the four
screws located in each corner.

Foot switch PC board is mounted to the front panel of the foot switch. After removing
the side panel, slide out the front panel as shown below.

Flip over the panel, exposing the backside of the PC board, and cut the trace from pin 8
of the 74HCT14 IC to the 470 Ω 1/4watt resistor.

Spongy mod

After removing the amplifier chassis from cabinet, locate the bold spongy switch on the
behind the power Transformer. All you should need to complete this mod is a soldering
iron and a small amount of solder.

1. Find the black wire on the switch that is connected to the bold side of switch, as
circled below.
2. Now heat up the end that is connected to T2 (RED) on the power tube PC board and
remove it.
3. Pull the unattached wire under the PC board and re-attach it over the top to T1
(orange).
