Read the following passage, then answer the questions:

Computer addiction can be defined as the excessive or compulsive use of the computer
which persists despite the serious negative consequences for personal, social, or occupational
function. The addiction involves online and/or offline computer usage. The concept of computer
addiction is broadly divided into two types, namely offline and online computer addiction.
The term "offline computer addiction" is generally used when speaking about excessive gaming
behaviour, which can be practised both offline and online. Online computer addiction, also
known as Internet addiction, gets more attention in general from scientific research than offline
computer addiction, mainly because most cases of computer addiction are related to the
excessive use of the Internet.

Part 1 Final Tests 3

The symptoms of computer addiction include:
1- Being drawn by the computer as soon as one wakes up and before one goes to bed.
2- Replacing old hobbies with excessive use of the computer and using the computer as one’s
primary source of entertainment.
3- Lacking physical exercise and/or outdoor exposure because of constant use of the
computer. This could contribute to many health problems, such as obesity. Researchers link
internet/computer addiction with existing mental health issues, most notably depression.
Studies showed that the majority of those who met the requirements of internet/computer
addiction suffered from interpersonal difficulties and stress and that those addicted to
online games specifically responded that they hoped to avoid reality. There are many
consequences resulting from computer addiction. For example, excessive computer use
may result in a lack of face-to-face social interaction. It may also lead to Computer Vision
Syndrome (CVS), a condition that results in headaches, blurred vision, neck pain, fatigue,
eye strain, dry eyes, irritated eyes, double vision, vertigo or dizziness.

Choose the correct answer from a, b, c or d:

11 One reason for being addicted to online games is the desire to .................... .

a) wake up early b) go to bed late

c) avoid reality d) develop computer skills
12 Obesity could result from .................... .

a) too much exercising b) the constant use of computers

c) reading scientific research d) social interaction
13 We understand from the passage that using the computer too much could lead to ....................

consequences.
a) undesirable b) bored c) positive d) beneficial
14 The writer is trying to tell us that we should not .................... .

a) play computer games b) get information from the internet

c) have face-to-face interaction d) use the computer excessively
15 .................... are two mental health problems caused by computer addiction.

a) Depression and stress b) Syndrome and backache

c) Eye strain and irritated eyes d) Headache and Computer Vision Syndrome
16 Headaches, blurred vision, neck pain or dizziness result from .................... .

a) some computer programmes b) having a computer at home

c) using the computer in the morning d) excessive computer use
17 The words that give the same meaning as “excessive” are .................... .

a) the use of the computer at work b) the high price of the computer
c) more than necessary, normal, or desirable d) using the computer when it is offline
18 The best title to the passage is “....................”.

a) The danger of using the computer b) The danger of overusing the computer
c) Computer addiction and online shopping d) The danger of using the computer online

Read the following passage, then answer the questions:
The road in front of my school is a narrow one. It is also very busy. Every afternoon when
school is dismissed, the road becomes almost impassable as children, bicycles, cars and buses
jostle and struggle to use it. Sometimes a policeman is there to help things out, but generally
chaos reigns and we have to be careful not to get involved in an accident.
A few accidents had already occurred. I was a witness to one. As usual, the road was
completely full of activity, children were running across the road to get to their cars and buses.
Cars and buses honked angrily at them. Just then, I saw a young boy make a dash across the
road. There was a loud blare of horn, a squeal of brakes and I saw a car knock into the boy.
He fell as though his feet were swept from under him. Fortunately, the car was not moving
very fast and the driver managed to stop the car before a wheel could run over the fallen boy.
All traffic stopped. I ran to the boy and saw blood on the road. He was bleeding from a cut
on his head. A man came and examined the boy. Then he lifted the boy and carried him to
a car. They sped off, presumably to the hospital. Many people surrounded the driver who
looked dazed and puzzled. A policeman came to calm things down. As there was nothing
I could do, I turned and walked down the road carefully. It was terrible to witness an accident.
I certainly would not like to be involved in one.

Choose the correct answer from a, b, c or d:

19 When is it difficult to cross the road in front of the school?

a) When the school finishes. b) In the morning.

c) When the children go to school. d) When there is traffic jam.
20 From the meaning of the word “jostle,” we understand that .................... .

a) all students walk in organised lines to leave school

b) there is hustle and bustle when the children leave school
c) buses go fast in front of the school
d) all students respect each other when they are outside in the street
21 As the road is busy with children, buses and bicycles, it’s probable to .................... .

a) be killed b) be robbed c) have an accident d) be arrested

22 While watching the children, cars and buses, the writer .................... .

a) had an accident b) saw many accidents

c) hit a boy running to his car d) saw an accident
23 The antonym of the word “dazed” is “....................”.

a) astonished b) shocked c) confused d) alert

24 Although the car was not moving very fast, .................... .

a) it hit the boy on the head b) it killed the boy

c) the driver was unconscious d) the boy didn’t see it
25 The writer could .................... .

a) take the boy to hospital b) stop the cut from bleeding

c) do nothing and walked cautiously d) stop the driver and hand him to the police
26 The writer wants to tell us that .................... .

a) it’s amazing to see someone bleeding

b) if you see a wounded person in an accident, try to save him if you can
c) if you see an accident, run away
d) it’s irresponsible of drivers to wait for the children

Read the following passage, then answer the questions:

Last night, I had a frightening dream. I should explain that just before I went to bed, I ate an
apple. I mention that because my mother always told me that if I ate right before going to sleep,
I wouldn’t sleep well and might even have a bad dream. But let me tell you about my dream.
I found myself in what seemed to be a familiar area outdoors, but I couldn’t remember ever
having been there before—in my waking life, I mean. Maybe in some other dream I had been
there and that might be why it seemed familiar. There were lots of huge trees and vines and
greenery, more or less like I would imagine a jungle in Brazil to be. It was very humid, but I was
dressed in winter clothing. That made me even more uncomfortable and I remember thinking
that I should go home and change clothes. But where was home and how could I get there?
I didn’t know the answer to either question- nor did I know how I ended up where I was. It never
occurred to me in a dream that I could remove the heavy winter coat, hat and gloves that I was
wearing. —it just didn’t seem to be an option.

8
In the dream, I was all alone. No one was with me. Suddenly, I heard voices and saw some
people who had been my classmates in high school. They were much older and looked quite
different, but I instinctively knew who they were. In the dream, I could even recall their names.
There were four of them and they seemed very concerned for me. They were dressed in loose
light-coloured clothing appropriate for this jungle, but my attire didn’t attract their attention at
all—nor did they mention anything about it being out of place. One of them approached me
and I knew he was speaking for all of them. He said they had been sent to warn me not to eat
the fruit from the tree in front of me nor to drink any of the water from the stream nearby. As he
told me this, I realised that I had something in my hand. It was fruit from the very tree he was
warning me about—and I had already eaten more than half of it. Without him saying so, I knew
that this fruit was poisonous and probably also the water from the stream.
At that point, I awoke in a heavy sweat, having thrown off my covers. I went to the bathroom
and splashed some water on my face to cool down a bit, then returned to bed. How strange, I
thought, that an apple tree was growing in the midst of that jungle.

Read the following passage, then answer the questions:
Millions of people are attacked by a secret enemy which causes more harm and greater
suffering than any other disease. Its name is worry. According to doctors, worry can actually
cause many organic diseases. And even when it doesn’t, it can, by eating our energy in many
ways, ruin our health and make our life hard and miserable.
Worry is a very dangerous enemy. The stresses and strains of life may make us worry about
silly trivial things. Worry eats into our hearts and causes us to spend long sleepless nights.
As a result, some of us get tired easily, some get depressed and others become irritable. And
life seems to be an endless chain of worries.
Worry affects nearly everybody in society from teenagers to elderly people.
Students worry about their exams. Parents worry about their children. Young men and
women worry about their future life.

Part 1 Final Tests 13

Needless to say, worry is the result of thinking in a wrong way. It is a fact that thinking
over worries brings about more worries. We must face it as it is, quietly, boldly and bravely.
The problems a worrier faces are the same that others face. To overcome worry, we should
cultivate different interests, develop contact with a larger number of persons and spend our

Read the following passage, then answer the questions:

Many parents need help to deal with their children’s naughty behaviour at home. The first
positive discipline technique is for parents to remain calm because nervous parents do not get
good results. Parents who cannot often remain calm find that their children stop taking any
notice of them. The second challenge is to know how to correct bad behaviour in an effective
way. For instance, punishing children by preventing them from watching their favourite TV
programme is not an ideal solution. Parents should establish clear rules for children to follow.
If children refuse to follow these, they know they will be disciplined. The most effective way
of encouraging good behaviour is to give positive feedback as often as possible, to show that
it is not only naughtiness that attracts attention.

14
As you think about how to discipline your child, it’s important to remember that the word
discipline is rooted in the meanings of learning and teaching. The best way to discipline
your child is to help him/her make better choices. You can role play the behaviours, using
a calm voice. Be encouraging when they make the right choices. Finally, you must know that
discipline can help your child learn how to behave – as well as how not to behave. It works
best when you have a warm and loving relationship with your child.

a) method b) test c) equipment d) attention
22 The underlined pronoun “them” refers to .................... .
a) parents b) children c) writers d) techniques
23 The article suggests that in order to discipline children, first of all, parents should .................... .
a) find an effective way to correct their children’s behaviour
b) treat them as harshly as possible
c) stop beating them
d) teach them how they have to behave themselves
24 Instead of punishing children, parents should .................... .
a) encourage them to follow the necessary rules
b) give them everything they ask for
c) give them negative feedback
d) praise them all the time
25 A suitable title for this passage would be “....................” .

Read the following passage, then answer the questions:
When you cut your skin, you bleed. Everyone knows that. If a person loses a great deal of
blood, they will become ill and may die. At one time, people drank blood to make them strong.
When doctors understood how blood went around inside the body, they tried ways of giving
blood to people who needed it. They used a rubber tube to take blood from healthy people
and give it to people who needed it. This is called a blood transfusion. The blood went through
a rubber tube from the arm of the healthy person into the arm of the sick person.
But there were two problems. First, it did not always work. Sometimes people died.
Later, doctors found the reason for this. We do not all have the same kind of blood. There was
another problem. To give blood of the right kind, the doctors had to find a person of the right
blood group. Often, they could not find a person in time. If they had a way to keep the blood
until someone needed it, they could always have the right kind of blood.
In the end, they found a way of keeping blood for a very long time. Now people can give or
donate blood every three months, if they want to. The blood is put in bottles or special bags
and then kept until someone needs it.

Read the following passage, then answer the questions:

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the ancient wonders of the world because it leans.
Although it was designed to be perfectly vertical, it started to lean during construction.
However, even without this famous characteristic, this building would still be one of the most
remarkable architectural structures from medieval Europe. It stands at 60 metres high and
until 1990 was leaning at about a 10-degree angle. The construction of the Tower of Pisa
began in August 1173 and continued for about 200 years due to the attacks of a series of
wars. Till today, the name of the architect is a mystery.
Many ideas have been suggested to straighten the Tower of Pisa, including taking it apart
stone by stone and rebuilding it at a different location. In the 1920s, the foundations of the
tower were injected with cement grouting ‫ حقن أسمنتى‬, which has stabilised the tower to some
extent. A successful restoration work, which was undertaken from 1999 to 2001, stabilised
the tower. Engineers placed weights on the structure’s north end, while at the same time
extracting soil from below, causing it to slowly sink back in that direction. The Leaning Tower
of Pisa still leans south, but now it does so at just 3.99 degrees. Engineers believe it will stay
for at least a few hundred years. It has become a living example of the combination of ancient
and modern architecture.

Read the following passage, then answer the questions:

Many great inventions are initially greeted with ridicule and disbelief. The invention of
the airplane was no exception. Although many people who heard about the first flight
on December 17, 1903, were excited and impressed, others reacted with a lot of laughter.
Some people called Wilbur and Orville Wright, the inventors of the first flying machine, fools.
Negative reactions, however, did not stop the Wrights. Driven by their desire to succeed, they
continued their experiments.
Orville and Wilbur Wright had always had a great interest in flying and mechanics. As young
boys, they earned money by making and selling kites and mechanical toys. Later, they
designed a newspaper-folding machine, built a printing press, and operated a bicycle repair
shop. In 1900 and 1901, the Wrights tested various gliders. In 1903, the Wrights built their
first airplane, which cost less than 1,000 dollars. They even designed and made a lightweight
petrol engine to power the plane. When they started the engine on December 17, the airplane
shook wildly before taking off. The plane managed to fly for 12 seconds, and it flew 120 feet.

Part 1 Final Tests 23

By 1905, the Wrights had perfected the first airplane that could turn, circle, and remain
in flight for half an hour at a time. Others had flown in balloons and gliders, but the Wright
brothers were the first to build a full-size machine that could fly under its own power. As the
contributors to one of the most outstanding engineering achievements in history, the Wright
brothers are accurately called the fathers of aviation.

Read the following passage, then answer the questions:
Earthquakes are natural disasters that humans cannot control. Sometimes earthquakes
can be very dangerous and people need to know more about where earthquakes come from,
and how to protect themselves from them and any other natural disasters.
Earthquakes are the shaking, rolling or sudden shock of the earth’s surface. They are the
earth’s natural means of releasing pressure. More than a million earthquakes occur in the
world each year. Earthquakes can be felt over large areas although they usually last less than
a minute. However, earthquakes cannot be predicted although scientists are still working on
the problem.
There are about 20 plates along the surface of the earth that move continuously and slowly
past each other. When the plates squeeze or stretch, huge rocks form at their edges and the
rocks shift with great force, causing an earthquake. As the plates move, they put forces on
themselves and each other. When the force is large enough, the crust is forced to break.

24
Shaking and groundbreaking are the main effects created by earthquakes, principally
resulting in more or less severe damage to buildings and other structures. The severity of the
effect depends on the complex combination of the earthquake magnitude. Groundbreak is
a major risk for large engineering structures such as dams, bridges and nuclear power stations
and requires careful mapping of existing faults to identify any likely to break the ground
surface within the life of the structure.

Read the following passage, then answer the questions:

Many experts believe there are too many people in the world. Unless there are big
changes in the way people think about the number of children they should have, the world’s
population will double in 25 years. There will be more than 20 cities with populations greater
than 20 million. Now there is only one. People may not have enough food and a lot may die
of starvation and diseases.
Some people point to countries such as Australia and say, “There is plenty of room there.”
Although most of Australia is unpopulated and much of it is tiny populated, there are reasons
for this. Firstly, much of the land is desert and waterless, and secondly, even the land that is
not desert is not suitable for anything, not even growing grass.

28
Another major problem we shall have to face, as the world’s population grows, is a shortage
of energy. We are using up coal and oil and when they have been used up, we shall have to
find something to take their place. It is true that we can make electricity from the heat of the
sun and moving water, but we don’t yet have the technology to do this in a big way. Perhaps,
the biggest problem we will have when the world’s population doubles will be pollution.
The air we breathe is already badly polluted. Although there are great efforts to control the
population increase, it is difficult to make sure that it will be controlled in the near future.

Choose the correct answer from a, b, c or d:

11 In order to prevent the world’s population from being doubled, there must be a change in .................... .
a) the methods of agriculture
b) sources of energy
c) the way people think about the number of children they should have
d) the education of the great numbers of children
12 Why will there be a problem of energy shortage as the world’s population grows?
a) We are using up coal and oil. b) We have to grow more food.
c) We can make energy from the sun. d) There will be more pollution.
13 How many present cities have a population of over 20 million?
a) Twenty. b) Three. c) Twenty-five. d) One.
14 The underlined pronoun “they” refers to .................... .
a) experts b) coal and oil
c) electricity and moving water d) population and pollution
15 The underlined phrase “tiny populated” means .................... .
a) having a great number of people b) having a small number of people
c) not having any people d) being totally empty
16 According to the passage, what will happen to the problem of energy in the future?
a) We can’t make energy from new sources.
b) We can’t control pollution.
c) We don’t have enough food for everyone.
d) We don’t yet have the technology to make electricity from the heat of the sun in a big way.
17 The passage suggests that it is .................... to solve the overpopulation problem.
a) easy b) controlled c) difficult d) scientific
18 According to the passage, why is a great area of Australia unpopulated?
a) People don’t like living there.
b) Australian people don’t have children.
c) Much of the land is desert and waterless.
d) Australian people don’t welcome immigrants.
Part 1 Final Tests 29
Read the following passage, then answer the questions:

The Coliseum is an ancient stadium in the centre of Rome. It is the largest of its kind. It is
very old. They started building it in the year 70. It took ten years to build. In ancient Rome,
men fought each other in it. They fought against lions, tigers, and bears. It was dreadful, but
most of the people loved it.
The Coliseum has been damaged many times over the years. It was struck by lightning in
the year 217. This started a fire. Much of the Coliseum is made of stone. But the fire damaged
the upper levels. They were made of wood. This damage took many years to repair. The worst
damage happened in 1349. A mighty earthquake shook Rome and the Coliseum. The south
side of the building collapsed. Pieces of the arena were all over the ground. Many people
took the fallen stones. Others took stones from the seating areas. They used them to repair
houses and churches. It had last been used as a castle. Before that, it was a graveyard. It has
been hundreds of years since the games. The damage to the Coliseum was never repaired. It’s
a good thing the outer wall of it still stands strong.
Today, the Coliseum is one of Rome’s most popular attractions. People from all over
the world come to Italy to see it. The Pope leads a big march around it every Good Friday. It is
a symbol that many know. It has even appeared on the back of a coin. I guess that makes it
a symbol that many people want, too.

Read the following passage, then answer the questions:
Resources are found in nature and make a better quality of life for humans. Soil, air, water,
sunlight and trees are all examples of resources that humans use every day, whether they
know them or not. Without resources, humans could not live on the planet Earth. Food, water,
and sunlight are all examples of natural resources. A natural resource is a material found in
nature that is used by living things. Air, rocks, metals, oil and salt are all natural resources.
Renewable resources are resources that can be replaced during a human lifetime. Trees, air,
water and even energy from the sun are renewable resources. Trees that are cut down can be
quickly replaced when seeds or baby trees are planted. Water from our bathtubs and sinks
can be cleaned at treatment facilities, so it can be ready to drink. Plants, wind and rain can
help clean the air to make it safe to breathe even if it came out of a car or a factory. Sometimes,
resources cannot be replaced after they are used. These are called non-renewable resources.
Once non-renewable resources are all used up, nature will not be able to replace them during
a human lifetime. Oil, natural gas, soil and metals are all types of non-renewable resources
that we depend on without even thinking about it.

Read the following passage, then answer the questions:

Most people think of the Egyptians when the origin of paper is mentioned. A plant called
papyrus grew in the marshes along the Nile River. The Egyptians cut thin strips of the plant,
softened them in the water and left them to dry. Then, they pounded them flat and laid
the pieces at right angles to each other to form a mat. These sheets worked well for writing
for the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. The word paper comes from this word papyrus.
Several other surfaces for writing were created by the Mayans and people in the Pacific Islands.
China was the source of what we call paper. Excavations have been made of the tombs
of the Han Dynasty (207 B. C.-9 A. D.) Silk cloth with text written on them was found in the
tombs. The art of paper making spread into Vietnam and Tibet about 250 A.D, then to Korea
in the 300’s and to Japan in the 500’s A. D. Papermaking continues to be fine art in Japan.
The craft went west in the 1100’s by the Moors in North Africa. Europeans preferred to use
parchment made from animal skin. Early European paper was made from rags, old cotton
and linen until realising that wood was the correct product.
In the west, the art of making paper by hand has disappeared. In Thailand however, this art
continues. The traditional paper is not really made from rice although it is called ’rice paper.’
It is made from the mulberry tree. The industry creates paper for newspapers, magazines,
books, paper bags, toilet paper, money and many other purposes.

Read the following passage, then answer the questions:
Plants have been used for treating illnesses since primitive times. Paintings in the tombs
of the pharaohs show that plants were being used by the ancient Egyptians for medicinal
purposes. Today, some drugs are still based on natural herbs. Aspirin, for example, is based
on the bark of willow trees.
Natural remedies are attracting increasing attention all over the world. The advantage
of herbal medicine is that the whole plant can be used. The powerful substance in the plant
cures the illness while the contents of the rest of the plant may help to prevent any harmful
side effects. In this way, herbal medicines may be safer than chemical ones.
Garlic is just one herb which has been used throughout the world as a cure for diseases as
it is used to treat hair problems. Similarly, henna, which is known to be good for the hair, can
be used in the treatment of cancer.

38
If you pay a visit to a herb shop, you will be struck by different colours and smells. There
are jars full of tree bark, roots, powders, oils and spices. The customer enters the shop and
explains his symptoms to the herbalist, who will take notes, study medical reports and check
his reference books before writing out a prescription. However, about eighty percent of
those who consult a herbalist have already been to a doctor. As a result of the worldwide
interest in herbal medicines, Egypt has set aside 50,000 acres of land in Beni Suef and Minya
for the cultivation of herbs with medicinal properties. If this experiment is successful, lots of
countries may import herbs from Egypt in the near future.

Read the following passage, then answer the questions:

How many things can you see in the night sky? A lot! On a clear night, you might see the
moon, some planets and thousands of sparkling stars. You can see even more with a telescope.
You might see stars where before you only saw dark space. You might see that many stars
look larger than others. You might see that some stars that look white are really red or blue.
With bigger and bigger telescopes, you can see more and more objects in the sky. And you can
see those objects in more and more details.
But scientists believe there are some things in the sky that we will never see. We won’t see
them with the biggest telescope in the world, on the clearest night of the year. That’s because
they’re invisible. They’re the mysterious dead black holes called stars. You might find it hard to
imagine that stars die. After all, our Sun is a star. Year after year we see it up in the sky, burning
brightly, giving us heat and light. The Sun certainly doesn’t seem to be getting old or weak.
But stars do burnout and die after billions of years.

Part 1 Final Tests 39

As the gases of a star burn, they give off light and heat. But when the gas runs out, the star
stops burning and begins to die. As the star cools, the outer layers of the star pull in toward
the centre.
The star squashes into a smaller and a smaller ball. If the star was very small to begin with,
the star ends up as a cold, dark ball called a black dwarf. If the star was very big, it keeps
squashing inward until it’s packed together tighter than anything in the universe.
Imagine if the earth were crushed until it was the size of a tiny marble. That’s how this dead
star, black hole, is packed. What pulls the star in toward its centre with such power? It’s the
same force that pulls you down when you jump – the force called gravity. A black hole is so
tightly packed that its gravity sucks in everything, even light. The light from a black hole can
never come back to your eyes. That’s why we see nothing but blackness.
So, the next time you stare up at the night sky, remember: there’s more in the sky than
meets the eye! Scattered in the silent darkness are black holes–the great mystery of the space.

Choose the correct answer from a, b, c or d:

a) Hitting. b) Shrinking. c) Rotating. d) Breaking.

b) Because it burns its own gas.
c) Because of its mirror-like surface.
d) Because of the light temperature of space.
24 According to paragraph (4), what causes a star to die?

a) Its gas is depleted. b) It collides with other stars.

Read the following passage, then answer the questions:

You don’t need to look back thirty years to realise the tremendous developments in science
and technology, and how these advances are changing the lifestyle of millions of people all
over the world. Although the television and video were there in those days, no one had heard
then of those wonderful remote-control units that turn the equipment on and off helping us
to choose our entertainment with the least physical effort.
There are many other effects of technology that made our life more comfortable. You no
longer worry about washing the dishes; your dishwashing machine can take care of that.
If you want a hot meal, you just pop your favourite food into the microwave oven and it’s
ready in minutes. If you need to send an urgent message, just write it down and send it
through your fax machine and it arrives on the other side of the world in seconds. Passenger
planes fly non-stop to different parts of the world and their pilots can find time to relax as
the computers do most of the hard work for them. This leaves people more time to enjoy
themselves and it also explains the remarkable current progress in the leisure industry.

Part 1 Final Tests 43

Leisure today is a big business. Just read the advertisements in your newspaper. You just
won’t believe the variety; you’ll find something to fit all incomes and tastes. As robots take
over the work of people in industry, as communications across the world become faster, and
while technology continues to create ways of persuading us to work less and enjoy ourselves
more, the leisure industry will play a far more important role in the lives of us all.

Read the following passage, then answer the questions:
I live in a housing estate like all my neighbours. The good thing about living in a housing
estate is that we have many neighbours.
Next to my house on the right lives a family whose parents seem to be always scolding the
children. I do not know them very well because they always appear angry. Never a day passes
without hearing the children crying and the parents shouting at the top of their voices.
On the other side of my house, however, lives a very quiet and polite family. Mr Saber is
a quiet man who seems to manage his family very well. Though he has four children, which is
one more than the other family, I never hear him scold his children. So, his children never cry.
Further down the road is a family whose radio is switched on most of the time, except late at
night. His immediate neighbours must have a tough time putting up with the noise of the
radio. Then there is a family whose members seem to live in a world of their own. Many times,
we have met along the road and not once has any of them even nodded his or her head in
acknowledgement.

44
They are not blind or deaf. Yet they can walk straight past me as if I am not there at all.
I would not say that they are unfriendly. I guess they are simply not interested in knowing
their neighbours. These are some of the neighbours living near me. There are others that
I have yet to meet. However, I am careful not to intrude on their privacy. The friendly ones
smile or raise their hands. The not-so-friendly ones look away. I have to live among them,
friendly or not.

Read the following passage, then answer the questions:

When most people look at a painting of a sunset, they see a beautiful work of art.
When Professor Christos Zerefos looks at a painting of a sunset, he sees valuable scientific
evidence. He believes that these paintings contain important information about the effect of
volcanoes on the climate.
Scientists know that after a volcanic eruption, sunsets are very red. This is caused by the
dust and ash that are sent into the sky. Volcanoes also lower the temperature of the Earth.
Professor Zerefos and his team decided to study paintings of sunsets before and after
volcanic eruptions. Red sunsets are a sign of polluted skies, so scientists believed that
landscapes that were painted after major volcanic eruptions would have bright red sunsets.
They wanted to use the paintings to measure how the volcanoes had affected the climate in
the past.

48
More than 500 watercolours and oils of sunsets that were painted between the years 1500
and 1900 have been studied by a team of experts. Professor Zerefos had the results analysed
by a computer. The computer calculated the amount of red in each picture. They found that
the sunsets that were painted after a volcanic eruption were bright red.
Many scientists are not convinced by this theory. According to them, it is impossible to
reach scientific conclusions based on art that was painted so long ago, because it is possible
that the colours have changed since they were originally painted. What is more, artists often
try to make something look very impressive when they paint. As a result, they may not always
paint an accurate picture of nature.
Professor Zerefos disagrees. He is certain that artists accurately copy the actual colours of
the sunsets they see. Paintings that were painted in the 20th century are now being studied
by Professor Zerefos and his team.
So, the next time you look at a painting of a beautiful sunset, examine the colours more carefully.

Part 1 Final Tests 49
Read the following passage, then answer the questions:

Most people know that the first man on the moon was Neil Armstrong in 1969. However,
since that time, the moon has been visited by eleven other men, but they are not so famous.
Who were these other space pioneers?
In 1969, four months after Neil Armstrong and his colleague Buzz Aldrin stayed on the
surface of the moon for 21 hours, Alan Bean and Pete Conrad spent two days there. Bean is also
an artist and is the only person on earth who is able to paint space scenes that he had actually
seen. In 1971, Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchel went on a mission to study earthquakes on
the moon (known as moon quakes). Shepard also enjoyed a game of golf there: because
there is very little gravity, he hit the ball farther than any professional golf player on earth!
Seven months later, two more astronauts stayed for nearly three days on the moon.
David Scott and James Irwin took along a special vehicle which meant they could travel
around. They returned to earth with many moon rocks. In 1972, John Young and Charles Duke
landed in the moon’s mountains for the first time.
The moon was last visited at the end of 1972. Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt
explored the moon for three days, longer than any other astronaut. Schmitt was a geologist
before he became an astronaut and he did a number of scientific experiments there.
Before they returned to earth, Cernan wrote his daughter’s name on the moon’s surface.
There is no weather on the moon, so he knew that there was nothing that would wear the
letters away. They are probably there today!
There are now plans to get astronauts to visit the moon again, although nobody knows
when this might be.

Once upon a time, there was a boy who became bored when he watched over his village
sheep grazing on the hillside. To entertain himself, he shouted, “Wolf! Wolf! The wolf is chasing
the sheep!” When the villagers heard the cry, they came running up the hill to drive the wolf
away. But, when they arrived, they saw no wolf. The boy was amused when he saw their angry
faces. “Don’t scream wolf, boy,” warned the villagers, “when there is no wolf!” They angrily
went back down the hill. Later, the little sheep herder cried out once again, “Wolf! Wolf! The
wolf is chasing the sheep!” To his amusement, he looked on as the villagers came running up
the hill to scare the wolf away.
As they saw there was no wolf, they said strictly, “Save your frightened cry for when
there is a real wolf! Don’t cry wolf when there is no wolf!” But the boy grinned at their words
while they walked grumbling down the hill once more.

54
After a while, the boy saw a real wolf sneaking around his flock. Alarmed, he jumped on
his feet and cried out as loud as he could, ’Wolf! Wolf!’’ But the villagers thought he was
fooling them again, and so they didn’t come to help. At sunset, the villagers went looking
for the boy who hadn’t returned with their sheep. When they went up the hill, they found
him weeping. There really was a wolf here! The flock is gone! I cried out, “Wolf!’’ but you didn’t
come, “he wailed.

Read the following passage, then answer the questions:
Asthma has a long history of evolution before it was categorically defined. The earliest
mention of respiratory distress and wheezing was found in 2600 BC in China. It was treated
by herbs till the 1950s when some tablets and adrenaline injections were invented.
Asthma is an inflammatory disease of the airways of the lungs. It is characterised by variable
and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction with normal temperatures.
It is one of the most common diseases in children, but adults can have asthma, too.
Asthma causes wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and coughing at night or early in
the morning.

Part 2 General Secondary Education Certificate Examinations 2022 55

Genetic, environmental are occupational factors are the main causes of asthma. If you have
asthma, you will suffer from it all the time. You will have asthma attacks only when something
bothers your lungs. The attack happens in your body’s airways, which are the paths that carry
air to your lungs. As the air moves through your lungs, the airways become smaller. During an
asthma attack, less air gets in and out of your lungs.
People can control asthma by avoiding some things that may lead to it or what we can call
“asthma triggers". They are different from someone to another, but there are some common
ones as tobacco smoke, dust mites, outdoor air pollution, pets, mold, smoke from burning
wood or grass and infections like flu. Asthma can be treated by breathing some medicines or
taking some pills according to the doctor’s advice. The effect of these two ways of medication
can be either to have a quick-relief control to ease the symptoms of an asthma attack or to
have a long control to have fewer and milder attacks.

One day, before sleeping early to go to school, I was reading an exciting story about
the sea world. I meditated and said, “Why don’t we have an adventure like that?” So
immediately, I phoned my friends and arranged to rent a boat and sail in the ocean.
Some of my friends agreed, but the others refused as the weather was predicted. Those of my
friends who accepted were very enthusiastic.
On a very cold morning, we set off taking all our needs with us. We sailed for a long time
without any troubles. But suddenly, everything turned upside down when the strong waves
were near us. One of my companions advised us to go back to the beach quickly, but it was
too late. How could we react in such a serious situation?

B Reading Comprehension

3 Read the following passage, then answer the questions: (8 Marks)

The twentieth century has witnessed many spectacular developments, but nowhere more
so than in transport. Up until the 1820’s when the steam engine was invented, transport on
land relied on human or animal strength, and its efficiency depended on the development of
a decent road system. Similarly, sea travel depended upon muscle power and unpredictable
winds. The nineteenth century relied heavily on steam to power trains and boats and these
were used for the movement of both goods and passengers, but it wasn’t until the invention of
the motor car that road transportation became important once again. But of course, the most
important breakthrough has been in air transport. The speed at which people can travel across
vast areas of the planet has not only greatly increased the number of kilometres the average
person travels in a lifetime, but has also changed the way in which people view the world. It
is now a much smaller place than it must have appeared in the era of sail and steam. Indeed,
when we consider that while once it took almost six months (to sail from London to Sydney)
you now need twenty-four hours by air, we can travel with the advances made in modern
forms of transport.

3 Read the following passage, then answer the questions: (10 Marks)

It was 2 o’clock a.m. when five-year-old Samy woke up to go to the toilet. His parents were
fast asleep in bed. But when he heard a noise in the living room and saw a light was on, he went
downstairs. There he found two men, they asked him about his name and told him they were
friends of the family. Unfortunately, Samy believed them. They asked him where the video
recorder was. Samy showed them, and said they had a stereo and CD player, too. The two men
carried these to the kitchen. Samy also told them that his mother kept her purse in a drawer in
the kitchen, so they took it. They finally left at 5 a.m. They asked Samy to open the back door

B Reading Comprehension

3 Read the following passage, then answer the questions: (8 Marks)

When Pamela Jarrett left university to become a primary school teacher, it was by no
means easy to find a job. She therefore decided to go abroad as a volunteer teacher for a year.
When she realised she would be teaching deaf and blind children, she was a little taken back.
But after a month’s training, she felt more confident that she would be able to cope with the
situation. The basic living conditions also came as something of a shock. Pamela’s school was
situated in a remote Ethiopian village, where her accommodation consisted of one room and
a shared bathroom. Not only was the space cramped, but there was no electricity, internet or
telephone access, so she felt totally cut off from the outside world. Now back home in Britain,
Pamela has used her valuable experience to set up a similar school. The specialised help she
offers to the deaf and blind has made a huge difference to dozens of children who would
otherwise find themselves struggling to learn. Pamela would certainly like to revisit Africa
someday. At the moment, though she is concentrating her efforts on expanding her school
to cater for children with other learning difficulties, too. It seems as if the more people get to
know her, the greater the demand is for her skills.

B Reading Comprehension

3 Read the following passage, then answer the questions: (10 Marks)

A new school of cookery has opened in France. “The Friends of French Cookery” has been
started by a group of grandmothers who are anxious to keep traditional food and cooking
techniques alive. They are against the modern-day use of freezers and microwaves. None of
these grandmothers has had any experience as professional cooks, and they run their school
without being paid. They are motivated only by a desire to produce good-quality, tasty food.
They are especially keen to teach the younger generation how to cook traditional dishes,
and to convince them that traditional food is better than convenience foods and take-aways.
The grandmothers run cookery courses two or three times a week, and the fee is about 20
euros which includes tuition and lunch. Most of the recipes are traditional, and some of them
have ancient legends attached to them. Only seasonal ingredients are used. The courses are
great fun, and tourists join in with the locals where they work together to create a delicious
meal. At midday they all sit down at long tables to eat three-course lunch.

B Reading Comprehension

3 Read the following passage. then answer the questions: (8 Marks)

Isaac Newton, a mathematician, physicist and astronomer, was born in a small English village
on 4th January, 1645. He was more interested in books than the family business of farming. He
was sent to a grammar school, which enabled him to then go to university at Trinity college,
Cambridge. He studied the scientific and philosophical writers that were revolutionizing the
world of learning and was rewarded with a professorship at the university. (It was at Cambridge
that Newton produced most of his famous works. In his most influential book, Mathematical
Principles of Natural Philosophy, he described his three laws of motion and the law of gravity.
His law of gravity explained what had been a mystery to the astronomers of the day: how
planets stayed in orbit and did not just spin off into space. Mathematical Principles of Natural
Philosophy is generally accepted as the foundation of modern physics, but Newton’s fame
does not rest on one book. Newton dominated the scientific world of the late 17th and early
18th centuries. At that time, Newton built the first reflecting telescopes, became a member of
parliament, was the warden of the Royal Mint, and was elected president of the Royal society,
the world’s oldest scientific academy. In 1705, he received a knighthood for his services to
knowledge, becoming Sir Isaac Newton. Newton lived a long life, dying at the age of 84 on 20th
March, he was obviously a genius.

B Reading Comprehension

3 Read the following passage, then answer the questions: (10 Marks)

The city of Machu Picchu, in Peru, South America, is considered to be one of the most
breathtaking sights in the world. It was built by the Incas in about 1450, when the Inca Empire
was at its most powerful. What makes this city so unusual is that it is situated 2,430 metres.
above sea level, on the top of a mountain ridge in the Andes Mountains. Machu Picchu is so
remote that the Incas had to take a long, dangerous path through the Andes to get to it.
To this day, historians still wonder how the Inca people were able to build this stone city
so high up without the use of modern technology. The Incas were expert builders, carving
the rocks perfectly and fitting them together so well that you cannot slide a knife between
the stones. Astonishingly, the rest of the world only learned of the city’s existence after an
American historian, Hiram Bingham, discovered it on 24 July 1911. Previously, only a few local
people were aware of the city. It has now become a popular tourist destination. People walk for
up to four days on the Inca Trail through the Andes Mountains to reach this amazing city and,
admire the spectacular view from the top.

B Reading Comprehension

3 Read the following passage then answer the questions: (8 Marks)

Whales are the largest animals in the world, even larger than some species of dinosaurs.
Ironically, whales are among the gentlest creatures we know. There are people who go through
great lengths to help them.
In 1988, when three young whales were trapped in the sea in winter. And the sea had begun
to freeze over, volunteers from all over soon turned up to help these creatures. Whales require
oxygen from the air, so the frozen ice was a great danger as it prevented them from getting
any air. The volunteers cut holes in the ice so as to provide more breathing holes for the whales.
This effort was a success although one whale drowned. Whales are protected from the cold
seawater by body fat that is called blubber.
Whales live in the ocean but in terms of behaviour, they are more similar to humans than
fish. They live in family groups and they even travel in groups. Whales are known not to desert
the ill or injured members; instead, they cradle them. Moreover, female whales have very
strong maternal instincts.

B Reading Comprehension

3 Read the following passage, then answer the questions: (10 Marks)

Have you ever noticed how busy the roads in Cairo are, especially in the rush hours? Every
year, more and more cars are using them. These cars do a lot of harm. Not only do they disrupt
the traffic, but they also cause pollution. Almost every family has a car. Some families have
more than one. No wonder you see many traffic jams all over the city. Perhaps the worst jams
are at the city centre. These long lines of cars crawling into Cairo waste time and money. Every
day, precious time is wasted while you are waiting impatiently at the traffic lights. At last, when
you reach your destination, you have every right to feel kind of relief, but soon you face new
troubles. There is no place to park your car. In Cairo, it is very hard to find parking spaces.
It is a problem that causes us trouble by day and anxiety by night. To solve this problem more
carparks should be built just outside the city centre. Then the drivers can leave their cars and
catch a bus to their offices. Another solution is to build multiple-story garages.
Wide, smooth, straight roads must be built now in place of the old, narrow roads. These
roads must not pass through the city centre, by-pass it, they must not be crossed by other
roads. This can be achieved by fly-over bridges. It is heart-warming to see such roads being
built now. Carts, tuk-tuks and cycles should not be allowed on such roads. Let us hope that in
the near future when people rush to work and then back home the roads will be as orderly as
ever and traffic will flow without hindrance.
