MODULE
MATHEMATICS 7
5 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ronn Jade Laway

Objectives:

After this module, you must be able to:

a. multiply and divide integers.

b. solve word problems involving multiplication and division of integers.
c. solve drills with speed and accuracy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Multiplication and Division of Integers

Rules in Multiplication of Integers

In multiplying two integers, find the product of their absolute values.

1. If the integers have same sign, then the product is positive.

 (a)(b) = ab
 (-a)(-b) = ab
2. If the integers have different signs, then the product is negative.
 (-a)(b) = - ab
 (a)(-b) = - ab
3. If the integer is multiplied to integer 1, then the product will be itself.
 (a)(1) = a
 (-a)(1) = - a
4. If the integer is multiplied to integer 0, then the product will be zero.
 (a)(0) = 0
 (-a)(0) = 0

Examples

Perform the indicated operation.

A.
1. (-11) (-10) = 110
2. (-14) (8) = - 112
3. (6) (-12) = - 72
4. (352) (20) = 7040
B.
1. (-3)(7)(4) = (-21)(4)
= - 84
2. (-6)(-5)(1)(3) = 90
= (30)(3)
= 90
3. (-11)(-6)(-2) = (66)(-2)

C. Solving word problems.
1. My mom is selling cookies in a jar for ₱26. How much will it cost if one
customer bought 6 jars?

(26)(6) = 156

Therefore, 6 jars of cookies cost ₱156.

2. Olive lost 5 lbs. each week because of the slimming tea she’s taking.
How much will she lose if she drinks the tea in three consecutive weeks?

(-5)(3) = - 15

Therefore, Olive will lose 15 lbs. by drinking the tea in 3

consecutive weeks.

Rules in Dividing Integers

1. The quotient of two integers with the same sign is a positive real number.
a
∧−a
 a b a
= =
b −b b
2. The quotient of two integers with different signs is a negative real number.
−a
∧a
 −a b −a
= =
b −b b
3. Zero divided by any non zero number is equal to zero.
0
 =0
a
4. Any number divided by zero is undefined (∞ ¿, it is no allowed.
a
 =∞
0

Examples:

A.
−56
1. =−8
7
121
2. =−11
−11
−84
3. =2
−42
90
4. =6
15
B.
1. Three apples cost ₱36. How much does each apple cost?
36
=12
3

Therefore, each apple costs ₱12.

2. For each late arrival in class, a student gets 2 demerits. Nigel was informed by
her teacher that he already got 10 demerits. How many days did he come late?

10
=−5
−2

Therefore, Nigel came late in 5 days.
