Handout #23
Section 7.1
Learning Objectives
• Determine internal forces in a beam.
Chapter 6 dealt with:
• determining external forces acting on a structure and
• determining forces which hold together the various members of a structure.
Chapter 7 is concerned with determining the internal forces (i.e., tension/compression, shear, and
bending) which hold together the various parts of a given member.
• Straight two-force member AB is in equilibrium under
application of F and -F.
• Multi-force member
ABCD is in
equilibrium under
application of cable
and member contact
forces.
• Internal forces equivalent to a force-couple system are necessary for
equilibrium of free-bodies JD and ABCJ.
• Internal forces equivalent to a force-couple system are necessary for
equilibrium of free-bodies JD and ABCJ.
• An internal force-couple system is required for equilibrium of two-force members which
are not straight.

Section 7.1
Beams
• usually long, straight, prismatic (having the same cross-sectional area) members designed
to support loads applied at various points along the member.
• usually subjected by loads perpendicular to their axis (________________ loading),
which causes internal shear and bending moment.
• Transverse loading types: concentrated and distributed (usually triangular or rectangular).
• Statically Determinate Beam types: (L = span)
Simply Supported Overhanging Cantilever
Beams (cont’d)
• Statically Indeterminate Beam types:
Continuous Propped Cantilever Fixed Beam
(Beam fixed at one end,
simply supported at the other)
• Positive sign convention:

Handout #23
Section 7.1
Ex #1 Determine the normal force, shear force and moment at sections passing through point E.
Member BC is pinned at B and there is a smooth slot in it at C. The pin at C is fixed to member
CD.
