One
The year of the eSIM and greater interoperability.
From 2022, the eSIM will start to become Driven by user demand, SIMs will be
the default technology for IoT devices. This increasingly agnostic, not proprietary. With

pushed into a device, meaning the device can,
(MNO) and SIMs in devices, under which
theoretically, be switched to any operator.
MNOs manage the choice of roaming
partners, as well as the switching process. This is good news for users, as it offers more
choice. Should they encounter any connectivity
blackspots, the device can simply switch
to another network. Users will look for a
platform that enables them to switch
between different, competing operators so
they can maintain relationships with their
customers. But it has consequences for MNOs,
who will be required to embrace a partnership
model and offer white label platforms that
offer truly global connectivity.

“... a global mobile network alliance that offers the

widest range of interconnects and provides the most
comprehensive localisation strategy available...”
Eseye has built a global mobile 'Star Alliance'
network that offers the widest range of
interconnects and provides the most
comprehensive localisation strategy available
in the IoT market today. It’s the best of both
worlds for MNOs and customers: Eseye enables
the eSIM switching between MNOs in different
regions to ensure each operator gets the traffic
if the device is in their country, and customers
get to enjoy IoT connectivity that works
everytime, and everywhere.

important implications.
When there is little knowledge about what’s
on the network, implementing enterprise-wide
policies, such as security, is very difficult.
A traditional hub and spoke approach to
switching between multiple IMSIs, where
MVNOs interconnect with MNOs via individual
point-to-point links, will be neither sufficient
nor scalable.

“Not only will this require IoT vendors to use

a single MNO-agnostic platform – a significant
cultural change for many - but they’ll also
need a single MPLS network to deliver
managed services at the edge.”
The way to counter these issues is through
deploying Network Level Orchestration (NLO),
using a single encrypted IP network to extend
asset visibility and security to the IoT edge.

Over the next 12 months, we expect the
market to split into three distinct camps.

Private 5G networks in a box.
Our final prediction is that the evolution
of 5G will enable enterprises to take control
of the cellular network on which their
devices run.
We’ve been talking about 5G for a long time, but
from next year, every building – be it an office, a
factory, or a petrol station forecourt – will have
the opportunity to buy and run its own private
network. It will soon be possible to buy a private
long-term evolution (LTE) network in a box,
without the need for an MNO. As this becomes
more popular, Wi-Fi and local area networks
(LANs) within buildings will begin to give way
to 5G networks.

Operators will react, of course, by producing

their own private IoT – a 5G network on-demand.
There’ll be a proliferation of start-ups, too, offering
something similar. Essentially, 5G’s coming of
age will open up a whole new market.

“Operators will react, of course, by producing

their own private IoT – a 5G network on-demand.”
But it won’t be without its challenges. Companies
will add more devices at the edge but, as those
devices switch between public and private
networks, there’s a risk that asset visibility could
be lost. Consequently, enterprise MVNOs will
need to provide a single platform and a single
encrypted MPLS network for both public and
private 5G providers.

If not, they’ll only be managing a fixed and

declining percentage of devices going forward.
