22438 Theory of Machines ME4I Class Test II 2023-24

QB with answers
1) Define uniform wear theory and uniform pressure theory for calculation of power transmitted
by clutch.
Ans: Uniform wear theory :
Uniform pressure theory:

2) Enlist four types of brakes.

3) Enlist any four applications of clutches.
i) Single plate clutch: Heavy vehicles, four-wheeler such as car, truck, bus
ii) Multi plate clutch: Two wheelers, mopeds, scooters, bikes
iii) Cone clutch: Machine tools, automobiles, press work
iv) Centrifugal clutch: mopeds, Luna

4) Define- Coefficients of fluctuation of energy and Coefficients of fluctuation speed

Coefficients of fluctuation of energy : It is the ratio of the maximum fluctuations of energy to the
work done per cycle. where, I = moment of inertia of the flywheel, ω = mean rotational speed, Cs =
coefficient of fluctuation of speed.
Coefficients of fluctuation speed : The difference between the maximum and minimum speeds
during a cycle is called the maximum fluctuation of speed. The ratio of the maximum fluctuation of
speed to the mean speed is called the coefficient of fluctuation of speed.

5) State the necessity of mass balancing of mechanical Systems

• In high speed machinery, the centrifugal forces are set up due to slightest eccentricity of rotors
from the axis of rotation.
• These forces are considerable as the centrifugal force varies as the square of the angular velocity.
(Fc=mw2 r).
• The dynamic forces set up will produce noise and dangerous vibrations that destroy the bearings.
• Hence proper balancing is necessary for safe & smooth operation of machinery.

6) List out various types of clutches used to transmit the power.

a) Single plate clutch
b) Multiplate clutch
c) Diaphragm clutch
d) Cone clutch
e) Centrifugal Clutch
f) Hydraulic Clutch

7) State the application of (i) Disc brake (ii) Internal expanding brake.
(i) Disc brake: Common in front wheels of most modern vehicles and often used in high-
performance cars. e.g. two wheeler and performance cars
(ii) Internal expanding brake. Common in rear wheels of older vehicles, but still found in some low-
cost or rear-wheel-drive models. e.g. Cargo vehicles , trucks etc.

8) Draw neat labeled sketch of Internal expanding brake:

9) What is balancing? What are the methods of balancing?

•In high speed machinery, the centrifugal forces are set up due to slightest eccentricity of rotors from
the axis of rotation.
• These forces are considerable as the centrifugal force varies as the square of the angular velocity.
(Fc=mw2 r).
•The dynamic forces set up will produce noise and dangerous vibrations that destroy the bearings.
• Hence proper balancing is necessary for safe & smooth operation of machinery.
An equal and opposite force acting radially outwards acts on the axis of rotation and is known as centrifugal
force This is a disturbing force on the axis of rotation, the magnitude of which is constant but the direction
changes with the rotation of the mass.
Static Balancing: A system of rotating masses is said to be in static balance if the combined mass
centre of the system lies on the axis of rotation. (i) Balancing of rotating masses (ii) Balancing of
reciprocating masses
Dynamic Balancing: When several masses rotate in different planes, the centrifugal forces, in
addition to being out of balance, also form couples. A system of rotating masses is in dynamic
balance when there does not exist any resultant centrifugal force as well as resultant couple.
The following cases are important:
1. Balancing of a single rotating mass by a single mass rotating in the same plane.
2. Balancing of a single rotating mass by two masses rotating in different planes.
3. Balancing of different masses rotating in the same plane.
4. Balancing of different masses rotating in different planes.
