Introducing the lesson, Playing games.
1. Warm up Learners play a variety of indigenous games which help develop:
5” ● Receiving
● Sending
● Travelling
● Hand -eye coordination
2. 30” Football familiarization:
1. Shooting. For two-way goal practice, two to six players are divided, half on each side of the goal.
The width of the goal can vary, depending on the skill of the players. Two types of shooting should be
practiced: (a) kicking a stationary ball from 10 to 20 yards out and (b) preceding a kick with a dribble. In the
second type, a restraining line 12 to 15 yards out is needed. Use spots or cones to mark this line. Use at least
four balls for this two-way drill. After a period of kicking, the groups should change sides. Ball chasers are
the players at the end of each line.
2. Shooting and goalkeeping. Scoring can also be practiced with a goalkeeper. Practice should be done with
a stationary ball from 12 yards out (penalty distance) and with kicks preceded by a dribble. The goalie and
the chaser should remain for one complete round and then rotate. Having a second ball to play with saves
time because play can continue while the chaser is recovering the previous ball.
3. Kicking and trapping. This is an excellent squad drill. Approximately eight players form a circle 15 yards in
diameter. Two balls are passed back and forth independently. Passes should be kept low, using primarily
the side-of-the-foot kick. Using three balls can be tried also.
4. Passing and shooting. The drill can be done with four to six players. Two balls are needed. A passer is
stationed about 15 yards from the goal, and a retriever is behind the goal. The shooters are in line, 20 yards
from the goal and to the right. The first shooter passes to the passer, and then runs forward. The passer
returns the ball to the shooter. The shooter tries to time her run forward so that she successfully shoots the
pass through the goal. Both the passer and the retriever should stay in position for several rounds of
shooting and then rotate to become shooters. The first pass can be from a stationary ball. Later, however,
the kicker can be allowed to dribble forward a short distance before making the first pass. Reverse the field
and practice from the left, shooting with the nondominant leg.
