General introduction :
Background of the study :
The exploration of gender dynamics within media involves a
comprehensive analysis of how gender is depicted and handled
across various media platforms, including television, film,
advertising, news, and social media. The profound impact of
media representation on societal perceptions, attitudes, and
behaviors regarding gender roles, stereotypes, and equality is
undeniable.
Research consistently emphasizes the crucial importance of
addressing gender-related concerns in media due to its
potential to either perpetuate or challenge existing gender
norms and disparities. As a potent influencer of public opinion
and societal norms, media plays a pivotal role in shaping the
narrative surrounding gender equality.
Scholars spanning disciplines such as media studies, gender
studies, and art history have delved into gender issues within
media, employing various theoretical frameworks. These
approaches seek to unveil the underlying power structures and
representations of gender embedded in media content.
For instance, examinations of the portrayal of women in
news media underscore a gradual progression toward gender
equality. Yet, the persistent issue of gender marking, where
male athletes often dominate coverage, continues to contribute
to the underrepresentation of female athletes in sports media.
Research findings indicate that media, from early
developmental stages, tends to perpetuate gender inequality.
Depictions of women and men in media frequently reinforce
traditional gender roles, stereotypes, and biases, potentially
constraining opportunities and fueling discrimination and
gender-based violence.
Addressing gender issues in media is imperative for
fostering equality and challenging detrimental stereotypes. A
media landscape that embraces diverse and accurate
portrayals of gender contributes to a more inclusive society,
presenting positive role models and narratives that empower
individuals of all genders.
Initiatives to tackle gender-related concerns involve
advocating for increased representation of women and
marginalized genders in media decision-making, promoting
media literacy, and endorsing gender-sensitive policies within
media organizations
Wonder Woman" serves as an example of the media's ability
to convey feminist narratives and empower women. It portrays a
strong female protagonist who does not need a man,
challenging traditional gender dynamics. The film defies gender
roles and traditional stereotypes, contributing to a more
inclusive and diverse representation of gender in media and
inspiring positive change in societal perceptions of gender
roles.
In conclusion, gender issues in media warrant deliberate
attention and proactive measures. By understanding theoretical
frameworks, scrutinizing gender representations, and actively
combating the perpetuation of inequality, we can aspire to
create a more inclusive and equitable media landscape.
