HARDWARE ESTIMATING:

BOLTS & NAILS

Bolts. A bolt is a form of threaded fastener with an
external male thread at the other end to receive a
nut. In actual installation, bolts should always use
washers under the head and nut of each bolt.
Square-head machine bolt is the type used.

In estimating the length of bolts, consider the

following illustrations:

1) Wooden post anchored by post strap – the

length of the bolt is equal to the width of the
post plus the thickness of the post straps plus
20mm allowance for the thread and nut.
2) Wooden post and single beam
(girt or girder) – the length of the
bolt is equal to the width of the
post plus the thickness of the
beam less the 20mm dap or notch.
3) Wooden post and two beams (one
pair of girts or girders) – the length
of the bolt is equal to the width of
the post plus the thickness of the
two beams less the 20mm dap or
notch.
4) Bolts are also used for rafter and
truss connections.
Nails. In woodworking and building
construction, a nail is a peg or pin made
of metal such as wrought iron, steel or
bronze, which is used as a fastener.

The most popular type of nail for

timber construction is the common
wire nail (CWN). The sizing is based
from the US penny, ranging from an
inch long to six inches in length.
Equivalent metric lengths are also given
in the table shown. Aside from CWN,
finishing and casing nails are also used.
In estimating for the quantity of nails, the unit used is in kilograms. One box of nails, called
keg, has a 45-kilogram content. The quantities of nails are based on the various applications
and material involved. These data are shown in Table 8-10 below.
ILLUSTRATION A:

From the floor framing plan as shown determine the quantity of

CWN for the floor joists, solid bridging, and 1x6 T&G flooring
required. Also find the size and number of 20mmØ bolts for the
pairs of 2x8 girder attached to 4x4 posts.

SOLUTION:
1. Find the total floor area: Aft = 3.50 x (5.00 + 5.00) = 35.00 sq.m.
2. Refer to Table 8-10, under Material: floor joist and bridging,
CWN size is 30d (4-1/2”). Quantity will be:
Q30d = 35.00 x 0.17 = 5.95 say 6kgs.

ORDER: 6 kgs. – 4-1/2” CWN 4. For the length of bolts, Lb = width of post +
2 girder thickness – 20mm
3. For the T&G flooring, still using Table 8-10, flooring nail size Lb = 4” + (2” x 2) – 20mm = 100 + (50 x 2) – 20
is 6d (2”). With 1x6 T&G quantity will be: Lb = 180mm. There are 6 connections using 2
Q6d = 35.00 x 0.09 = 3.15 say 3-1/4 kgs. bolts each. Qb = 2 x 6 = 12 pcs.

ORDER: 3-1/4 kgs. – 2” Flooring Brad ORDER: 12 pcs. – 20mmØ x 180mm Mach. Bolts
