COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
INTRODUCTION
This manual gives the function of parts and gives maintenance information that is
required for full shop repair. Some repair instructions also refer to a ”STANDARD
PRACTICES MANUAL” 32-09-01 from MESSIER-BUGATTI-DOWTY (CAGE F6137) as a source of
alternate methods that give the same results.
NOTICE!!
The methods and procedures in this manual are intended to promote an effective
maintenance program. Deviations from the methods and procedures are acceptable if
an equally effective method is utilized, with full recognition of airworthiness
requirements. Maintenance practices must be consistent with standard shop
procedures and shall not jeopardize the performance of the brake assembly.
Refer to the TABLE OF CONTENTS for the page location of sections or subsections.
An explanation of the use of the ILLUSTRATED PARTS LIST section is provided in the
Introduction of that section.
Weights and measurements in the manual are in S.I. (International System of Units)
metric units that are followed by U.S. (English) units in parentheses. English
units have a period for the decimal point. Metric units have a comma for the
decimal point. Large numbers with five or more digits to the left of the decimal
point have a space (not a comma) between the ”thousands” and hundreds” digits to
prevent confusion with metric decimal points. Common conversions and abbreviations
are shown in the following table.

1. General data
The carbon brake assembly is installed on the left or right axles of the
landing gear. The ”NORMAL” hydraulic supply is connected to one of the two
hydraulic fitting assemblies on the piston housing. The ”EMERGENCY” hydraulic
supply is connected to the other hydraulic fitting assembly.
Friction between the stator disks (attached to the brake) and the rotor disks
(which turn with the wheel) causes the carbon brake assembly to operate.
The input of hydraulic pressure into a set of seven pistons compresses the
stator disks and rotor disks together, which causes friction.
The braking torque is transmitted through the torque plate and to the landing
gear axle.

- An adjuster pin with an attached ball which holds this tube against
the spring retainer.
- A pin retainer which holds the adjuster pin at one end of the
piston sleeve.
The end plate disk is positioned on and riveted to torque buttons which
are riveted to the torque plate. Refer to Figure 1A. After SBs
C20449-32-3303, C20534-32-3304 and C20449-32-3376 the end plate disk
assembly is installed in the torque plate. Refer to Figures 1B, 1C, 5A and
5B.
Retainer clips are riveted to the rotor disks and slot inserts protect the
carbon from the torque bars in the wheel.
The heat sink assembly is of the Extended Disk Life (EDLTM) type (refer to
Figure 6). It has the rotor disks that are of different thickness than the
stator disks. When the heat sink assembly is fully worn, the set of five
thin stator disks (includes the pressure plate disk and the end plate disk)
or four thin rotor disks are replaced. The disks that remain can be used
again for a second life (after a machining procedure).

COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
C. Torque plate
The heat sink assembly is installed on a steel torque plate which has 18
torque splines that are an equal distance apart on its outer surface. These
torque splines engage the pressure plate assembly and the stator disks and
prevent their rotation. One of the torque splines is drilled to let the
temperature sensor assembly go through it.
A heat shield, attached by the screws, the washers and the nuts, is
installed in the torque plate.
Two wear indicator pins are attached to the pressure plate assembly and go
through the piston housing. These wear indicator pins show the remaining
thickness of the heat sink assembly.
The hydraulic pressure supply that is connected to one of the inlet ports
(NORMAL or EMERGENCY) of the piston housing causes pressurization of the seven
related pistons at the same time.
The rotor disks can turn between the stator disks with a total clearance
between these parts that is the same as the ”C” dimension:
(1) When the carbon brake assembly is pressurized, the pistons move and
push the pressure plate assembly, which compresses the stator disks
and the rotor disks against the end plate disk.
The friction between the stator disks and the rotor disks causes the
braking action.
Page 11
32--- 41--- 65 FEB 17/14
The document is subject to the controls and restrictions on the first page.
COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
(2) As the piston moves, it compresses the spring between the spring
retainer and the spring housing that is installed in the bottom of
the piston. The adjuster pin, the ball, the nut and the adjuster tube
do not move and keep the spring retainer in position.
The spring housing contacts the spring retainer when the clearance
”C” is taken up. Clearance ”C” is called ”running clearance”.
(3) Wear ”U” of the heat sink assembly makes necessary an added movement
of the piston, which pushes the spring retainer and the adjuster tube
to a new position on the ball.
The ball expands the adjuster tube which permits the added movement
of the piston.
When the wear of the heat sink assembly is maximum, the end of the wear
indicator pin is aligned (”flush”) with the piston housing as shown below.

NOTE: The detail parts of the carbon brake assembly are shown on the figures in the
Illustrated Parts List.
NOTE: For each carbon brake assembly sent to the repair shop, include the remaining
wear dimension with the brake. This dimension should be measured on the
aircraft with the carbon brake assembly pressurized. If this is not done,
pressurize one of the two systems to a pressure between 143 and 147 bar
(2074 and 2132 psi) and measure the remaining wear dimension. Refer to Figure
101.

You can send back a carbon brake assembly to the repair shop for the two causes
that follow.
- Full wear of the heat sink assembly (335) (the wear indicator pin (325) is flush
with the piston housing (020)).
- Deterioration/Failures (removal before full wear of the heat sink assembly
(335)).
Remove the brake before the usual time:
- If there is hydraulic leakage (refer to the leakage test and the Fault
Isolation table).
- If there was an overheat:
- Caused by a rejected take-off (refer to the ”CHECK” section).
- Caused by a dragging brake (refer to the operation test, Fault Isolation
table and the ”CHECK” section).

A. General
(1) For all parts of a selective assembly or parts to which time can cause
damage, the table below gives:
- the maximum wear and the limits to put the component back into
operation, for parts which are not new.
(2) But it is highly recommended to give the parts their initial condition
(as new) during the major overhauls. To do that, repair the parts as
written in the “REPAIR“ section or replace them as necessary.
(3) We can change the worn dimensions or the fits if the experience got
during the ageing analysis or the performance of the components
permits it.
B. Layout
(2) Second column : gives the figure and item numbers shown
in the Illustrated Parts List.
ID: INSIDE DIA.
OD: OUTSIDE DIA.
(3) Third and fourth columns : give the manufacturing dimensions with
tolerances.
(5) Seventh and eighth columns : give the permitted dimension limits to
put the component back into operation as
it is.

COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
1. Policy
The section is the list of all the components of the unit(s) which are given in
this manual, and permits the identification of these components. It contains,
in the form of indexes, detailed parts list etc., any necessary data for the
procurement of any components.
The alphanumerical index of the manufacturers’ Part Numbers gives, for each
component, on the same line as the Part Number:
The Illustrated Parts List makes it possible to find the location of each
component on the figures and in the different groups of parts into which
the equipment is broken down.
The Item Numbers have a numerical base. For each figure, the Item Numbers
begin at ”1” and are given in numerical sequence with regular increments of
tens.
They do not change during the total life of the item. A variant letter is
added to the Item Number as a result of any modification included.
Letter “A” identifies the items of the original version. Usually, variant
letters are not shown on the figures.
Page 1
32--- 41--- 65 FEB 17/14
The document is subject to the controls and restrictions on the first page.
COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
Remarks: When the Illustrated Parts List includes handed assemblies, the
Item Number with numerical base 2 refers to a RH assembly and its
variant. The Item Number with numerical base 1 refers to the LH
assembly and its variant.
The USAGE CODE column shows the Item Number of the next higher assembly or
sub-assembly. For items used on the full range of the primary equipment,
the USAGE CODE column is kept blank. This column is also kept blank for
assemblies located on a line which is not indented (line 1).
The ”UNITS PER ASSY” column shows the quantity per assembly which is
necessary for a next higher assembly. In the indexes, the quantity shown
refers to the quantity broken down for a given CSN.
3. Revision
B. After each modification of a given item, the numerical Item Number itself
does not change. But the variant letter ”A” is added, then to ”B” thru ”Z”
(do not use letters ”I” and ”O”).
C. When it is necessary to add a new part, its name must be on the line which
agrees with the correct position of this part in the breakdown of the
assembly.
When the layout of the basic figure does not make it possible to show new
parts or the modified parts in their new form, a new figure (called ”figure
variant”) is then issued.
This figure variant will have the same number as that of the basic figure,
suffixed by a letter given in alphabetical sequence (do not use ”I”
and ”O”).

COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
E. Deletion of items:
- make sure, first, that the modification is applied to all the applicable
assemblies.
- make sure, for items kept in store, that they are modified or removed
from store.
If these two conditions are satisfied, identify the deleted items, in the
nomenclature column, by the word: ”DELETED”.
The Part Number of the deleted part is then kept in the indexes with the
word ”DELETED”.
4. Assembly breakdown
The assemblies are broken down and each of their components is shown in the
assembly sequence.
The vertical lines of the indention are shown as dotted lines as follows:
Example : 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Assembly
. Sub-assembly
. . . Detail part
This sequence is, in fact, modified by the nomenclature of the attaching parts
and storage parts. The attaching parts are shown immediately below the assembly
or sub-assembly they attach, and above the detail parts.
The storage parts are shown immediately below the parts on which they are
installed for protection.
